New SY Headquarters

Tue Dec 04, 2018 8:45 pm

Sun Country (SY) Airlines has been looking for new office space all year since the sale of the airline left them in a building that they no longer own. Currently, in Mendota Heights, they are in a building that is owned by the David Brothers, their previous owners,

SY has approached the Metro Airports Commission saying they may move into the hanger (!!??) for their new HQ location which is on airport property. How do they expect this to work? This article even says they would not build on sq. footage, rather transform the current space. I know they have some open property at MSP, why use a hangar and make for less maintenance space?

I do not see this working!

Possible answers
1) they aren’t planning on growing (doubtful)
2) they are planning on shrinking overnights at MSP (possible)
3) they are putting a hangar elsewhere that they plan to grow at (very possible)
4) the hangar was not built for current wingspan of their fleet creating wasted space (very possible)
5) if it’s an old hangar it may need expensive fire suppression updates and this is a better use

I’m not sure where the confusion is. Being headquartered in a converted hangar is not unheard of especially for smaller airlines.

Sun Country had a hanger that was their operations center. It could house two 727 or one DC-10. Many offices where located there. It was an all under one roof operation. Catering & Commissary was also there. The hanger was removed when MAC built a new runway. All SY is doing is putting all company operations under one roof so to speak. SY currently has a IIRC 180,000 sq ft hanger that hold 4 737. All MX offices including Stores, and GSE. SY currently is using the old Mesaba hanger for maintenance, flight operations (dispatchers). Commissary is moving from Mendota Heights off Pilot Knob to the XJ or SY Building "C". Cargo is located there. There is a large area that could house another hanger, and an additional office tower or HQ, in the future.

On the bright side, if there's a total meltdown in operations, the HQ employees can be right there on the scene helping out :)

Am surprised they are consolidating *EVERYTHING* under one roof. Always good to have a back up plan ... just in case.

I believe the hangar in question is the old Mesaba Airlines headquarters which Tom Petters bought for the Airbus Business Jet conversions and can only fit one narrow body jet such as a 737 because of the hole in the door and height of the hangar. I think they are just using the office space in the front of the building. They also have their main hangar next door which is their main maintenance facility. If they're already leasing the space but not using it to the fullest extent this may be a good solution.
