New 772LR order, owner?

Sat Dec 08, 2018 5:39 am

Boeing recently reported a UFO order for a pax 77L this fall... still trying to figure out who it's for.

Anyone?

Could it be Mid East Jet adding to their fleet? They operate practically every model of Boeing and already have a 777.

Qantas, to test new long haul routes and provide training for the 777 before the 777X arrives.

Leasing one from Qatar or buying one at scrap value from Air India would be cheaper.

.......or if a conversion from the passenger model to the freighter requires a conversion fee, the owner (probably a lessor) ordered the 772L to secure the delivery slot with the intention of converting the order to a 777F once a down payment from the operating airline is received.

But why not order a 777F in the 1st place?

I wouldn't be surprised if this actually Delta.

The conditions of the contract (options) could be such that it is advantages to order the passenger variant (the 772L may have the lowest deposit of the 777 family) and convert to a freighter at a latter date. There could literally be hundreds of reasons why the customer ordered a 772L including they wanted to order a 772L. This is only one option.

Initially thought so, but Boeing separately lists VIP orders, even UFO, so this is pax.

Perhaps, and while I'm aware that DL rarely buys used widebodies (some 767s 25yrs ago + some 3holers nearly 40yrs ago, being the rare exceptions).... one would think that they'd go for the stored EY birds than ordering new, and save even more?

Oh you’d be surprised. One poster regularly makes (baseless) comments about how Delta will become an all airbus airline and how the relationship is so bad between B and DL due to the BBD C series lawsuit. I’ll let others draw their own conclusions about the intelligence of such statements.

Yes, Delta is going to replace the whole A350 order with 1 single 77L, that's how great Boeing planes are. :cool2:

As I said earlier that it could be Delta, but any of the current operators could be possible like Air Canada or Ethiopian. Otherwise it will be a complete surprise by a small airline from a country you would not expect it at all.

Basless? Airbus has won the last three Delta orders. Please tell us, what could Delta possibly need from Boeing? They have every narrowbody and widebody replacement on order already.

Besides, Delta doesn't need any more long haul aircraft. They are sending the A350 and 77L to places like AMS and CDG because they have no other long haul destinations to send them to.

Basically you can discount all major airlines that has 777-300ER but does not have ultra long haul routes, or those airlines that do not have 777s. And a single 777-200LR is either for replacement or additional frame. So delta makes sense. Another candidate I have in mind beside Delta is airlines like China Southern. It is looking for a plane to be able to fly between Guangzhou and Latin America. A single 777-200LR can fly a 3 weekly mission. Otherwise I really have no idea whom else would find this aircraft useful. Maybe Turkish? Or JAL or ANA wants to do Japan to Brazil non stop?

It would need to be waterblasted and the interior fumigated as well, I flew on an AI flight last week from Chennai to New Delhi, it was the most disgusting plane I’ve ever been on. I also flew IndiGo, Jet Airways and Vistara, all of them were as clean as any EU airline I’ve flown.

Every airline plays the two manufacturers against each-other, and most airlines would not turn down a great deal. That said, I don't think the 797 is a slam dunk for DL yet...they could very easily order A321LRs and the new, short-haul A330s (if that ever happens) instead of the 797 if the economics work out. The common type with the current fleet and likely cheaper price tag on the Airbuses will certainly not be insignificant in the decision making process...

as much as I'd like to see Delta order more 777s, its highly unlikely its for them. Also a single 77L doesn't really do anything for them.

Agreed. Delta is more inclined to take the cheaper reheated aircraft from Airbus. Like the 787, the 797 will not be cheap on initial offer. Delta has never been an early adopter of new technology.

My guess is Ethiopian.

They already fly 77Ls.

They indicated a 779 order "by year end" earlier this year, which we have not (yet) seen materialise. Maybe Airbus has persuaded them on 3510s instead but they have a niche requirement that it can't meet which an extra 77L can. Do we know the deivery date for this 77L?

as much as I'd like to see Delta order more 777s, its highly unlikely its for them. Also a single 77L doesn't really do anything for them.

I'm starting to think you are saying this on repeat hoping it suddenly comes true.

again, for the 30th time now, no they do not. They still need more 767 replacements, 757 replacements, t-tail replacements, 319/320 replacements, 738 replacements and 777 replacements later down the road. (and after that, 330 replacements)

care to show us? I don't think you know what you are talking about.

The777Man

maybe but they have orders for both 789s and 359s. Not sure why they would order a single 77L on top of it.

I believe the DL talk around the 787-10 always was prefaced with “At the right price,....”.

I’ll put a vote in for ET, though I have no idea who it’s going for.

Of course it was

of course that doesn't matter. As I said, Tiger has no idea what he is talking about. The CEO who made 787-10 comments was Richard Anderson.....who hasn't been the CEO for years. The only airplanes Ed has commented on was the 789 (but it was just a general comment about how good of a plane it is) and the 797 comments.

But any airplane Delta orders will be for the right price and right time. So far Boeing has yet to be able to hit the mark on wide bodies.

I would think if AI needed more longhaul aircraft, they should work a deal either purchase or lease deal on their former 77L'S with EY.

Might be a military or Government aircraft; that would not necessarily go down the BBJ channel. Something like a dedicated usage aircraft for the Saudis or Qatar, that sort of thing.

This thread went off the rails quick.

Anyway, I’d say this is either a country’s new VIP aircraft or someone like Omni.

Maybe even Ethiopian? They’ve been expanding lately.

The777Man

This is the most reasonable.

It is perplexing. Even with the deals probably being offered.

I don't know where the response went, so i will rehash it. VIP aircraft usually come from BBJ and are listed separately. Unless some VIP operator (never happened that I can see) decided to rent a 77L BBJ. So I vote for ET too, since they have done a 1 off 77L order previously.
