FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

NOTE: Another week where there were technical issues with the data. Hopefully this will resolve itself soon. I may do an update later on if the data is released again.

Wow! Delta to fly up to 6x daily BOS-DCA... it’s about time. Can’t wait to book a seat!

These all seem like significant adds to the burgeoning BOS hub, in particular the add to DCA and ORD. They'll be up against the American shuttle on the DCA route, I believe, and a whole lot of B6, UA, AA and WN on BOS-ORD. BOS-ORD has been one of the biggest holes in the DL BOS network for a while...

I guessing the PHL-BOS is doing well or more likely beefing up the BOS hub. Here's to trying Delta next year.

How is there such a high frequency on inter island routes out of HNL given the fact that many of the other islands have their own nonstop to the US and Asia as well as the fact that these other islands are not very populous.
Instead of typing in "mods", consider using the report function.
Love how every "travel blogger" says they will never fly AA/Ethihad again and then says it again and again on subsequent flights.

DTW-HNL cuts aren’t suprising. Prices are below $400 round trip for many dates. It’ll be like MSP where there isn’t service from Labor Day to November. We will see if this sticks, and my grant was wished for GDL!

Ahh, my Sunday is complete. Thank you Enilria.
Now for some BOS analysis.

WOW...DL entering 3 new business markets from BOS, they are not playing games with their expansion from BOS. Further increases on PHL, IND. They are really starting to put up a fight in BOS, I wonder if we are going to see any responses in the upcoming weeks from AA, UA, and B6. I'm sure these will catch their eye.

Interesting, UA/CO has flown this route for a long time, loads also seem okay. I wouldn't be surprised to see DL to hop in on this route in the future. UA has really shrunk in BOS, close to insignificance.

I’ve been to Hawaii a few times, a lot of these routes are flown for work/business, shopping, and families, since there is no other transport between islands other than chartering a boat.

I'm not sure I would consider 35 flights a day (almost entirely mainline) insignificant...they also put their premium transcon product on SFO-BOS and run domestic 777's to SFO. For not being a hub or focus city, they serve BOS quite well.

CLE-BOS sees fares drop as low as $100 and the ERJ probably scares off most business travelers. Not many connecting passengers either as the options to connect on either end are the same cities already served from each city.

I'm disappointed that BOS-YVR is being trimmed. I wonder if the route will be better served when AC gets the a220.

I can't read this, is DL adding or dropping BOS-EWR/ORD based on the arrows? If adding, that's awesome. DL hasn't operated BOS-EWR since around 2001. Interesting they're trimming EWR-CVG though.

UA dropping BOS-CLE is just sad. That was mainline for a long time up until recently.

EDIT: I just checked Delta.com and BOS-EWR is bookable in September on E-175s. It seems like DL's BOS expansion is mirroring their 2000-2001 expansion (then retraction) of the focus city. That said, I'd love to see the recent dumps of EWR-AMS/CDG replaced with EWR-LAX/SEA or something like that. Cool stuff!

For a non-hub city, I understand BOS gets a lot of love from UA, however, I am comparing UA today, to the ops UA previously had at BOS after the CO merger. For the past 4 years, their market share in BOS has been falling, they used to fly to some non-hub routes, however, but now they have cut all those routes and their largest focus city. Hunting through Google Flights... it looks like DCA-LGA is down 2 flights from summer and CVG is down 1, haven’t found the other 3 yet...

EDIT: looks like they are also displayed in Enilria’s report: CVG, RDU, DTW, ATL losing one; LGA losing two

Agreed but BOS-CLE was a major business route for UA and CO. The fact that CLE-LGA is still served and they're dropping CLE-BOS is weird to me.

Also, look at all the CLE seasonal routes they just added on UA according to Wikipedia - Seasonal: Charleston, Fort Lauderdale (begins March 9, 2019), Fort Myers (begins March 9, 2019), Tampa (resumes March 9, 2019)

Sad UAL gave up the CLE hub, they had nearly an 80% retention rate.

Love how every "travel blogger" says they will never fly AA/Ethihad again and then says it again and again on subsequent flights.

In the latest OAG report DL is showing 4 flights per day in September on BOS-DCA - it was 0 previously. Last year in SEP they flew 0 flights on this route.
BOS-EWR/ORD are going from 0 to 3 in SEP, and was 0 last year.

DL is expected to get their WN gates sometime im June or July timeframe- this is all in anticipation of that. DL wants and is keen to be the carrier of choice in BOS and too good of a market for them. They are now entering the other US2 fortress hubs. There are very few US2 hubs remaining where DL does not fly to with all these adds. There are still missing hub links.

DEN, IAH, CLT, IAD ( although they will now fly to DCA), PHX, DFW, MIA.

It looks likely they will start adding all these stations slow and steady and also continue to add international stations at a gradual pace.

UA has not flown to any non hub destinations with the exception of CLE from BOS. CLE route was an exception as it used to be a UA hub and there was still business ties between the two cities. UA is extremely regimented in their business approach IMO - with the exception of CLE and maybe one offs they only fly hubs. AA is also becoming similar to UA and I believe it is just a matter of time when they shutdown the 4 non hub routes.

Quite the drop in frequency, long gone are the days of the every 30 minute shuttle. I chose random Wednesdays in April, there are only 11 daily Q-400 flights now. Peak times have 3 AS mainline flights daily (1 738, 1 739 & 1 320), an additional 3 E-175 flights operated by QX, OO offers no flights between SEA & PDX with this schedule. I see a total of 17 dailies on AS.com.

Delta confirms the adds we're discussing, and also announces that it will add BOS-CLE as of April 1. That's not available for booking yet, which leads me to believe they saw UA pull out this weekend and decided to add it to their big announcement.

DL has confirmed they are starting BOS-CLE on April 1, flights just haven't been loaded yet. Might explain why UA bailed, no sense fighting DL and B6

I suspect it's the other way around — UA bailed and so Delta decided to jump in the market. Flights haven't been loaded because they didn't know it was coming until yesterday.

Well BOS is now without a doubt becoming SEA 2.0.

I wonder how gradual the BOS buildup will be? I'd imagine DL will also add things like transborder routes that B6 won't touch in order to try and become dominant at BOS.

One big difference between BOS-CLE and LGA-CLE is that UA has a hub at EWR and a FF base on the NYC side to support LGA-CLE nonstop service whereas UA has no hub in Greater Boston. Likewise, UA also has a hub at IAD and a FF base on the DC side to support DCA-CLE nonstop service.

Waiting to see what they have next in store for B6....uh...I mean BOS. Fine with me...takes attention away from SEA.

This may be the pre-announcement response to B6 BOS-IND if this is indeed happening at 10am.

They let go of a lot of people recently. I could have spilled the beans.

And really without the intl justification they had with SEA.

IMO this pushes B6 closer to being acquired. Also, the TATL fruit will all be picked over by the time they get around to ordering planes, never mind going through ETOPS and then launching service.

I think it's time for UA to do something else with their LGA and DCA slots instead of flying 50 seaters to CLE. Heck why not launch MCO, FLL, TPA, PBI , RSW etc.. with mainline.

They've been boosting their Florida service from EWR with year round service to Key West, 3x daily to Sarasota and new service to Pensacola.

And, of course, LGA has slots whereas BOS doesn't.

4x at Paine coming. Maybe this will give a litte more gate space at SEA. Every 30 minutes always seemed a bit extreme.

Cool stuff!

It's read as: Delta is going from 0 flights in SEP to 4. The number in brackets indicates how many flights they operated at the same time last year, so in each case none. Therefore, these are all adds for DL.

I'm expecting a potential B6 reaction to these new DL routes by adding MSP/DTW-JFK on E190's.
