New Airline Announcement at IND 12/11

Mon Dec 10, 2018 10:16 am

https://www.wthr.com/article/officials- ... ew-airline

Since this is big enough news I thought it deserved its own thread.

"Airport officials will announce the domestic airline that will be added to the airlines already there."

Announcement will be live at 10 AM Eastern time. 12/10.

I hope for IND’s sake this is a meaningful add (i.e, B6 or NK) and not something underwhelming like SY.

Anything but SY or NK. I'd even take the DFW dance troupe over those two.

There has been a correction to the story. The announcement will be Tuesday instead of today.

Does this only happen in the US, that the airport operator announces the new airline operating there , on a specified date and time event. ? And it's all kept secret till then? I'm sure the airline would have hired personnel at the airport, and it can easily leak out to media as to who that can be. But anyways, seems like an interesting concept.

Some airlines tend to have their days of the week for service announcement, so who announces on Tuesdays? I feel like when NK announced CMH, it was either a Tuesday or Wednesday.

WN usually has its schedule extensions and new route announcements on Thursdays.

I hope it’s NK - good chance of at least 3X weekly MSY flights if that happens.

Operational wise, Sun Country is up front about their intentions...come in with a few days a week for a couple of months and see how it goes and build it from there.

JetBlue and Spirit come in, announce cities then cut back.

As an airport operator I'd rather take a slow long term commitment then having to deal with a uturn next year.

I was pretty convinced that it would be JetBlue until this, now I'm not so sure. Still hoping it's B6 over a third ULCC for IND though.

The use of the word Spirit twice there feels an awful lot like a coy way of indicating who's coming in spite of the attempt to get people off the scent.

What about the non-stop flight to Asia some on the IND thread were saying was guaranteed to be announced by year-end? Wasn't there speculation that ANA was going to come based upon a giant blue box in the IND airport?

Isn't VNO more likely due to the Sabonis-factor? I can see W6 acquiring the WOW air A330 via the new partnership to try this out.

Would be nice if they could at least operate their current routes before expanding further.

I see Baltia as the best bet. They can fly it as IND-VNO-LED to finally tap into that lucrative St. Petersburg market.

I would guess that it's NK. Not only through the "Spirit" comment via Twitter, but it seems like they're in "expansion mode" at the moment. I would guess that flights to LAX, LAS, BWI, BOS and MCO/FLL could all be possibilities.

If it's B6, then obviously JFK and/or BOS.

If it's SY, then it'll probably be some routes to Florida, like TPA and RSW.

Didn't someone from FL (AirTran) end up at NK (Spirit Airlines)? FL had a rather significant operation at IND, including services to markets as far away as LAX and SFO, and it seems like a lot of NK's recent moves (entry to CMH, international from MCO, etc.) are indicative of that experience...

The new VP of network planning was old AirTran yes. Spirit has a lot of ex-FL staff in all aspects. Recent growth in MCO & BWI show the FL influence. LAS, ORD, DFW, and IAH are in the mix because they were able to capitalize as other ULCC's weren't as large. DTW is an oddball but only so large and on a power trip with NK because that's essentially NK's brain stem behind Miramar/FLL. Not too mention, they were founded up there in SE Mich.

I seriously hope it isn't NK. IND doesn't need another race to the bottom airline. It is bad enough that we have G4.

NK, SY and B6 are the only possible additions I foresee.

SY has not announced routes to be added to their recent massive expansion, so I am going to guess it is SY most likely. Either routes to Florida in the spring or summer additions as they are announcing their summer schedule very soon.

Not to mention SY announces on Tuesdays.

Surprised Ft Lauderdale isnt on the list. But also thankful to see them come in with just a few cities rather than come in with say 8 or 9 and then cut them all back within a year.

Too bad Frontier is already at gate A3. That'd be fun driving up the road seeing a big yellow banana as you're coming in to the terminal.

While NK didn't announce plans to serve BWI, DFW, or FLL nonstop from IND, NK could add nonstop service to BWI, DFW, and FLL out of IND in the future.

Could be that they're waiting on the FLL runway construction to wrap up in October before growing there. That was a big reason for the recent MCO buildup. Fall would be a good time to start MSY and TPA as well.

Congrats to IND for landing Spirit. Would have been surprised if B6 has plans for IND? Presuming BOS would be a destination....with DL and WN already on that route with 5-6 dailies (depending on date) that route is a bit over-served already imo.

Good call! Totally forgot about the FLL runway project.

I'd be curious to see what flights are connectable through Orlando. I know Spirit has expanded to what...10, 11 destinations out of Orlando with most of them being in the Caribbean, etc., but I know the schedules are all over all the place. I imagine there are some possibilities though. Has anyone had the chance to look?
if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport
