Can a 789 make EWR/JNB nonstop both ways? If that is one new route, it would be awesome if they tagged on Cape Town the way UA would use 1 of 4/5 GRU aircraft to make the hop over to Rio.

I wonder why tags like that stopped? Were they picked up by a partner? I used to fly UA from JFK to EZE to Montevideo. Or, perhaps they were money losers. It did feel odd to see 33 people total on a 763 taking off to Montevideo

UA has already applied for another daily EWR-PVG, so I really doubt IAD- or IAH-PVG will be part of whatever gets announced.

DEN-PVG maybe? Perhaps DEN-AKL? Probably not though, maybe IAH or ORD to JNB?

The latter. Partners can cover the short hop for the few onward pax - flying your own metal was a $$$ sink.

Personally, knowing how airlines like to ‘big up’ news stories, it will either be something that would struggle to blow a birthday cake out or something that would make us all sit back and take note. Personally, I’m going with the former.

Highly doubt it. That would be a press release, not a media event, IMO - unless it was their launch of the type.

The 787 isnt special anymore. It's a damn damn good plane, but with 800 of them delivered, they're rather ubiquitous now.

SA still does fly to IAD. They alternate between stopping at ACC and DKR, with fifth freedom rights for both stops.

11:00 CST is 12:00 EST. And it's on 12 December. Any significance to 12:00 on 12/12 (if it's EWR or IAD, which are in EST)?

Pure speculation on my part but maybe it's something along the lines of applying for a JV with NZ to cover the Australia - US market (independent of the current NZ-US JV) and pulling IAH-SYD in favour of EWR-AKL. Although with the trouble QF and AA have had with their proposed JV I'm not too sure. Selfishly I'd like to see SFO/LAX-BNE even if it's just 4x weekly on a 788.

A few more thoughts:
  • The OP says the announcement is going to be done by Oscar, so I wouldn't expect this to be a run-of-the-mill route announcement (they usually just put out press releases for those, or at most they are announced by the VP of network planning or someone comparable). Restarting service to Africa, expanding significantly at one particular hub (e.g. IAD), or starting many new routes from multiple hubs would all seem reasonable.
  • The new routes probably won't involve PEK, PVG, EZE, GRU, or GIG, if I had to guess. As someone else mentioned, UA applied for a second daily EWR-PVG flight that they're not even necessarily likely to get, and there aren't additional tier 1 authorities for China beyond that. And Brazil and Argentina are not trending up at the moment. See DL cutting MCO-GRU and reducing DTW-GRU to seasonal, AA cutting back on JFK-GIG, downgauging MIA-EZE, etc. IF there is a new route announcement for Brazil/Argentina, I certainly wouldn't expect it to start before Winter 2019.
  • Even if this announcement does include routes for Winter 2019, I don't expect a huge expansion of capacity to Oceania. I could see LAX-PPT since SFO-PPT seems to be doing well (maybe even on the 78J since that would be within range), or possibly a winter-only SFO-MEL or something like that.
  • If ORD sees a new intercontinental route out of this announcement, my money would be on ORD-MAN on a 752 or 763.
This is my signature until I think of a better one.

4. ORD-TLV
5. SFO-GRU
6. EWR or IAD-GIG
7. EWR or IAD to JNB.
8. ORD-ARN or CPH or OSL.

Whatever it is I hope nobody's disappointed.

They need to hop back into the OSL market. ARN went over 85% LF all summer and OSL would most likely give the same outcome.

I actually think this is a good guess. SFO-DEL has been rumored for a while, and they could spin it as that UA is a true RTW airline with EWR-DEL-SFO-EWR.

Africa seems unlikely to me. There are a lot of challenges with serving Africa, and UA has never really done well there. I don't think there would be much value in UA trying to chase for traffic at JNB.

SFO-DEL, more details of the AV and CM partnerships, and a few more TATL or TPAC routes would certainly be a satisfying announcement, and those all feel like things that UA would be capable of doing.

LO serves Poland for UA.

LO and UA are not JV partners, it is only a partnership through STAR. If UA wants to serve WAW, they will. Even if you pull up routings ORD-WAW, you only get traffic through FRA or LHR.

The word "Historic" sets the bar petty high when making an announcement by an airline with United's resume'.
Since the announcement seems to indicate several new/renewed routes, the internet will probably melt by this time on Wednesday.
Since guesses are free here, I'll toss out both LAX and ORD to TLV which would make TLV covered by 5 UA hubs. Then again, LAX and IAD to HKG would make HKG covered by 5 UA hubs.

IAD-HKG
ORD-TLV
IAH-CDG
DEN-AMS
LAX-FRA
SFO-FCO

Possibly a redirection of the airline? I am surprised that no one has gone for new marketing and updated livery. Or even a surprise with the intent to be launch customer for 797.

So good point, I'm wondering if this might be a large shift in system capacity, i.e. Redeployment of RJ traffic from EWR to IAD & Expansion at EWR coupled with an ORD Rebuilding announcement.. there was a rumor on the CLE thread that UAL was looking at how to deal with temporary reductions in capacity at ORD coupled with the redevelopment, the rumor pointed to an expansion at CLE (which I highly doubt) but this could be tied into shifts in flights & traffic between the existing ORD, EWR & IAD hubs.

SFO-MEL has been rumoured for years- I thought QF had beaten them to the punch, and didn’t think the market was big enough for the two. But could be wrong. I can’t ever see PER way too small a market

The B789s at UA are premium heavy. On the return trip, I could see a few Y seats blocked to have it a 5 FA frame. With W likely coming into the fleet, UA B789s will likely have fewer than 250 seats in the future.

As for SFO-DEL, that's actually within range of the B789 at 6705 nmi. SFO-BLR, which could make sense as a tech route (Silicon Valley to Silicon Plateau), is 7570 nmi---probably at the edge of a B789 in UA's configuration (advertised range is 7635 nmi at 290 passengers; UA frames have 252 seats). (Remember that Kingfisher wanted a higher-MTOW A345 to fly BLR-SFO.) That said, the flight likely goes east both ways.

BNA or RDU would be nice but I highly doubt it will happen. They do need to round out the domestic network from IAD if they are going to use it as their southeast(ish) hub. Cities like MEM and LIT need to be added. They have service to DEN but not IAD. It makes no sense.

UA 787-8/9 minimum international staffing is 7. FAA monimum is based on seats in configuration, not seats available for sale.

I agree, there is nothing “historic” about LOS both CO and and UA flew there. Nor anything to GRU or TLV be that special.

JNB would be, CO flirted with it via WO briefly but never had its own metal there. No one since BN has flown GUM-NA nonstop. Either would be amazing routes.

Well... unexpected if true, but at least now I won’t have to fly EgyptAir to get to Cairo

Also, I guess it does make sense as it is technically Africa, so UA then would have the “historic” mark of serving all 6 continents (let’s forget Antarctica)

CAI wouldn't be too surprising given CO was going to fly there until the uprising. But a very much welcome addition if true.

Whatever it is, I hope ORD gets something out of this. If they don't, it will be a big letdown for sure.

It would be great to see something out of ORD, but ORD is the only hub not to get international love in years (cutting seasonal SNN is the only move in years) and the only hub without 787s (which AA loves to exploit in Chicago). Sure, BJX is added, but ZIH was cut. No widebody additions.

I won’t hold my breath in anything at ORD until T2 and the satellite international gates open in years. UA is content to let partners expand at ORD (look at all of the * adds!). While not on UA metal, it is nice to see AV to BOG, NZ to AKL, NH to HND (moved an NRT flight).

Look at Wiki and see all of the new routes at ORD next year! UA only has seasonal Express flights to HHH. DL has more planned at ORD next year (BOS and RDU).

As much as we joke about AA international at ORD, they have many new markets (sure most are seasonal), but at least new markets.

What’s with the negativity? You act like UA does absolutely nothing. You brag about AA yet they just cut more international flying in this calendar year than UA has in years. PVG, PEK and NRT. Sure they added BCN last summer and ATH next summer but they also dropped MAN. UA certainly hasn’t added much internationally lately but they haven’t dropped anything other than SNN in a long time.

I have heard it will be EWR-CAI with the 787-10 from a pretty reliable contact at UA. It’s not a for sure, but I am expecting it.

Well... unexpected if true, but at least now I won’t have to fly EgyptAir to get to Cairo

Also, I guess it does make sense as it is technically Africa, so UA then would have the “historic” mark of serving all 6 continents (let’s forget Antarctica)

If true, I would question how successful it would be. Is there really enough premium traffic to make money on that flight? The tourist community to Egypt from the US hasn't returned, and not sure VFR can sustain it when JFK-CAI on MS also exists.

I think it will be to Africa, as the 'historic' element would be UA again serving all six continents. Hoping JNB as it would be a new destination as well.

DEN-PVG maybe? Perhaps DEN-AKL? Probably not though, maybe IAH or ORD to JNB?

My bet is several new IAD runs, especially Europe and carib.
That would go along with UA trying to build up IAD as a connections hub again.

Since the ACA fiasco, Dulles has been the poor step child. Now it is the growth area.

Maybe I'm reading too much into "historic" but a handful of route announcements don't really do it for me. Maybe a new hub/focus city, like one in the southeast?
