All the talk of new hubs/focus cities is way off base. Here's the wording from the OP:

"an historic package of new and expanded international routes"

I think that tells us 1) this is going to be more than just a single route, 2) the focus is on international flying. Don't expect new routes from CLE, BNA, FLL, BOS, etc.
This is my signature until I think of a better one.

Historic would have to be something never done before. LAX-SGN would be historic - never been flown before. Also a huge underserved market.

Totally out of left field here....but partnership with Etihad. Etihad desperately needs a US-based partner and UA is probably the best fit. EY already flies to ORD and LAX. Bring back the EY SFO flight. Move one NY flight to EWR. Move the former DFW flight to IAH and connect oil to oil.

That’s pretty heavy metal for an all-new route. Would expect it to launch with, say, 763 first. It’s also one of the cheapest premium markets in the world, so the latest Polaris product would be an interesting add.

Certainly “historic”.

Just for fun
SFO-NAN 3X opposite PPT 788
LAX-FRA 777
DEN-HKG 789
IAH-BNE 789
ORD-SIN 789
EWR-JNB 789
IAD-CAI 788
With Polaris seating 789 will be in 236 or less.
Seat range should give extra range.

What ever routes they are I’m sure 50% of A.ner will hate them..

For the record, my hypothesis that UA will add a SE hub in BNA was a joke (hence the exclamation point at the end). If you read the "Whats' happening in Nashville" thread, literally every few weeks a BNA fan boy proposes/complains about UA (not) starting a southeast hub there. I know what the word "international" means.

The most exciting part of this announcement has to be that UA has the strongest track record as the leader of "big" new routes out of the US3 so regardless of what they announce, we know there's going to be at least one "wow" showstopper moment. They're pulling out all the stops for this one, and this is UA so it's gonna be something big. UA is leaving DL and AA in the dust, excited to see what they announce!

This is a good point. UA has started some really interesting routes without too much fanfare.

The fact that they're pushing this being 'historic' and Oscar doing it, makes me think it will be something truly big.

By the way, ignoring your last statement. UA is in no way leaving DL in the dust (unless you are looking at the extremely small view of unique routes)

I know that the AV/CM/UA JV hasn’t been entirely approved but I would not exclude Latin America as a big chunk of the international announcement.

I would have to guess something along the lines of SFO-SGN or SFO-BKK and maybe EWR-JNB? I would think it will be SFO/EWR centric. Maybe LAX will get something new too but I'd be surprised if ORD, IAD, IAH, or DEN get much.

Last night I dreamt that United launched "Ted X", their long haul sorta-LCC to take on Air Asia X, Norwegian, Scoot, Jetstar et al....
Then I woke up.
In the harsh light of day, I'm backing routes to Africa, Vietnam or perhaps just a bunch of routes from IAD to launch a focused expansion from there.

i think SGN makes sense because of the “historic” clue, and because the PDEW exists from LA. while SFO is UA’s pacific gateway, LAX-SGN would be my pick.

Maybe I’m pessimistic, but logically I can’t see it being ORD or IAH.

1) From IAH, the only logical add is China and that can’t be it because UA announced their intentions to not serve IAH-China at this time. I don’t see more Latin expansion from IAH at this time either.

2) As for ORD, I can’t think of any logical place to expand from that they don’t already fly. Maybe a seasonal route? ORD-Asia is extremely well covered and the fares have hit bottom in many areas. ORD doesn’t generate the O&D to Latin America that EWR, IAH, or even IAD do sans Mexico and GRU so I can’t imagine expansion from there.

I’m willing to be proven wrong. Just my two cents.

Maybe a JV with AC, I know AC has been wanting a JV with UA for years and especially now as WS and DL are creating their own JV.

I was actually wondering around a JV with NZ too, covering Australia and NZ, along with US- NZ has most Aussie ports covered out of AKL. AA/QF JV is to be given thumbs up or down approval by DOT in Feb. Although NZs launch or ORD would have been a better time to announce.

Noone has thought that the historical announcement could include orders too, couldn't it? Why not order some A380s and put them on well established routes, this would definitely be historical.

I think that's more hysterical than historical. The A380 in the UA fleet is just not going to happen.

Eh? United and Air Canada have had a JV for years and years!!! There is a standalone UA-AC Trans-Border JV, and the UA-AC-LH TATL JV. That said, I guess that there is scops to include AC in the UA-NH or proposed UA-AV-CM JVs.

Upthread it was suggested that IAH-SYD could be cut to free up 787 capacity as there is no slack in that fleet next summer. I disagree, although I think the route will see the seasonal reductions again next summer. If you look at the proposed 787 utilisation they are being used heavily on routes like IAD-LHR. Given the relative slack in the 763 and 764 fleet I would not be at all surprised to see some routes currently listed as 787 being shifted to 767s (either model) to free up 787s for a new longhaul route.

UA and AC do not have a transborder JV. They can codeshare on some routes, but they can't share revenue or coordinate schedules on transborder routes. They have tried and failed a few times with regulators to try and get a JV through. It looks like they might try again soon, though several markets would be excluded from it.

More so than specific new routes, I have a feeling this will be something related to development/changes to one of their JVs. I hope I'm wrong because I would love some fun new routes.

I would like to think ORD-MAN has a chance. UA used to get good connections through the old bmi flight, and now there is no direct competition from AA, could stand a better chance of happening.

Of course, with MAN-EWR confirmed as a B767-400 next summer, that could be all the extra capacity UA needs to MAN right now, so, won’t be disheartened if there is t anything extra for MAN.

I agree. It would seem SGN from either SFO or LAX. To me, SFO would make more sense since it is UA's primary Pacific gateway. I am pleased to see that after 8 years post merger, the company is connecting the dots and taking full advantage of its global footprint.

I’d say highly unlikely on SFO-MAN. I’d think we would need ORD and/or IAD before that’s even considered. Would be nice to see UA codeshare on SQ MAN-IAH though, that could add some feed into the large UA hub there.

Somewhere they haven't flown
Somewhere they'll make money
Somewhere they have the right product to make it work...

All in a "Historic" context....Ok, there's not that many places on Earth left to fit that moniker.

Oh, it won't be out of ORD either.

Vietnam fits the 'historic' moniker but dosent seem to make economic sense IMHO. The global economy is slowing; the US economy will likely slow next year. Places like SGN, MNL, JNB, IST, AMM & CAI would be marginal...at best...in a healthy growth cycle. Plus, with the exception of Vietnam, these are countries in precarious political situations that could go sideways at any moment.

I don't know. Not pretending to have some keen insight here. Just be surprised if UA is going to gamble on some of these long shots.

"Historic Package of New and Expanded International Routes"

The question is how fast will that happen. Many have noted a few frames slack in 2019 so that's a start (including 3x HA birds). With 13 789's coming in 2020 and one 78J, they have to put them to use somewhere. I know that is a long time off, but that has to factor into it.

Is there a partner airline (rumored Brazil?) in a new or under-served market (Africa or Seoul) that would justify such a pre-announcement buzz? My guess is IAD love...HKG!

The combination of Historic and Package of Routes makes me think that it could be something like “Most destinations in (the world, Asia, Europe) ever served nonstop from the mainland US by a single airline.”

That's very likely . It's about the same length as IAH-SYD and shorter than PER-LON, and has to deal with less East-West winds. There's enough demand to support the route as well. While there would be other more ''wow'' places, AKL seems the most likely

The first two (SGN, BKK) are too low yielding to support the flight. They may get bums on seats for such a flight, but are heavily price sensitive VFR/Tourist passengers. Those cities may probably be better suited to a long-haul one-stop LCC rather than ULR non-stop full-service, where the low yields would not likely be able to cover the costs of operating the ULR routes.
