This is exciting news. By late 2019 AA will start receiving more 787-8 - a great replacement for some of those TATL 767 PHL flights.

This will finally give AA a good product in ZRH market, and with the 788 a low premium configuration it makes sense to use this on MAN and the 332 elsewhere.

Dang! I'm booked ZRH-PHL in June on a 763. I was hoping it would be replaced by a 787 by then.
Worked for WestAir, Apollo Airways, Desert Pacific, Western, AirCal and American Airlines (Retired). Flight Memory: 181 airports, 92 airlines, 78 a/c types, 403 routes, 58 countries (by air), 6 continents. 1,119,414 passenger miles.

Definitely wasn’t expecting to see this happen next year but I’m happy to hear that it is. Great for PHL. Good routes to start off with as well

Great news! The operational reliability of the 767 at AA is absolutely abysmal and the product isn't competitive. Glad to see AA step up the game. Hope they convert the rest of their 767 TATL routes to 787s (or 777s if necessary) soon, including JFK-MAD and JFK-CDG.

Ugh, AA introduced the 787 on CHI-MAN before cutting it, hope PHL is not going the same way.

ORD-MAN was struggling for a couple of years and the 757 struggled in winter and 767 in summer due to reliability. PHL was established as a PMUS route, PHL is becoming AA's east coast hub, and so I'm led to believe it is a major route for freight.

I don't see it going the same way as ORD to be completely honest

JFK-MAD and CDG is going to be on a B777 isn't it?

PHL-MAN is essentially subsidized by the pharma industry so it is unlikely to disappear.

Is that still true? Didn’t a large part of the business move to Cambridge?

Glad to see some of the LUS 767 leave PHL. I'm curious what route will be ran with the spare A330-200. MAN and ZRH are business heavy routes. Glad to see an updated hard product.

I’m pretty sure the LUS 767 have been gone for some time. These were LAA 767s flying LUS routes.

Nice addition. Maybe AA will stick in a domestic PHL/MIA with the 788.

Not sure when that's going to happen. There is some B767 that run between PHL-MIA. I wondering if it was coming for the late 2020 season. I assume some B787 will have to be based in MIA for the B767 replacements.

The 788 and 332 in AA configuration have a similar number of seats (same J, slightly more W in the 788, more Y in the 332) so it's not obvious to me that this change would be a prelude to cutting the route.

The more I think about it, the more I believe the free up A332 could fly the AMS route. Just a thought

I would feel the opposite. Rather be in 2-3-2 seating with wider seats than 3-3-3 seating that is very narrow.

JFK as well, if it can still be considered a hub. No 787s are expected out of NYC for quite a long time. But at least all international long haul flying from JFK will be 77W and 772.

Why dang? I would be very happy if I were you. Personally I would rather choose to fly on an old 767 instead of a newer 777 or 787. The 767s are disappearing and will be gone in three years from now. The 777s and 787s are staying longer than the 767s are. It is now time to fly on a 767 before it's too late. 787, you still have many more years ahead to fly on it after the 767 is gone. That's my opinion.

Technically, PHX is seeing a single daily 788 rotation (ORD-PHX-ORD) this winter. With ORD-Europe significantly pulled back in the winter and with ORD-PEK/PVG cut and ORD-NRT reduced, there's a lot of spare 788 capacity that's being used on shorter routes until the busy summer schedule kicks in. However, I think you're correct that AA has never operated the 787 to MIA or CLT on a scheduled basis, and not to PHL until late next year.

They are not that outdated. I recently flew on a 757 from JFK to MIA roundtrip and the airplane seemed in good shape, clean, refurbished with new seats and well maintained, plus the cockpit was upgraded with the latest EFIS. The airplane looked good to me. I'm pretty sure that the 24 remaining LAA 757s in the fleet, the ones configured for international flying, still have several more years to stay in the fleet, at least till the mid 2020s, longer than the 763s, A333s and ex-US 757s.

sure, the seats in the 787 are like an inch narrower. but the bigger windows, lower altitude, higher humidity, better ife systems, and the fact that the interior isnt 25 years old all make the newer jets so much nicer to be in than the older jets. i personally find the seats more comfortable as well.

AA has never fully refreshed their 767s like UA and DL have. Y still has the old tiny 767 overhead bins (except, iirc, for a handful of 767s delivered in the early 00s- on all others J and only J has the nice pivot bins), no PTVs, and mostly no power. They finally added WiFi to them earlier this year, but of course with most seats not having in seat power need to use it wisely. This is along with superficial things like dated interior lighting.

When will AA roll out Premium Economy to the 788s? I know the 789s got them preinstalled, but the 788s have to be retrofitted. I'd consider trying AA out of PHL if I could book in W...

I'm a bit surprised I thought Athens would be one of the first to be switched over to a 787 since there's a lot of weight restrictions out of Athens back to Philly on the Airbus....

I am booked up front in Business, fortunately, and this is my first trip in the updated C product. Hopefully it's as comfy as the 330 I flew on this route the last time (AA outside, US on the inside.).

If it was coach, I'd prefer the 767 2-3-2. I've flown a lot of miles in the 762/763 and it was my favorite. As much of that was standby, it stood the least chance of getting stuck in a center seat. (I've been stuck in the middle seat center on 2-5-2 DC-10s. On standby, one is more grateful for that, but not on a purchased/award ticket!)

But I'm still waiting for my first flight on a 787. AA pre-removed me from one a year ago.

Putting the 787 on ATH from PHL would be odd, it would be a decrease in seats. The flight is usually jam packed in the summer (when it operates) with high load factors. If they see an issue with payload they may have the 332 operate it instead, which has more capacity than the 787 but better range than the 333.

I imagine DFW-PHL or even ORD-PHL will see a flight or two get upgraded to a 787 to help rotate these aircraft.

Well, they are running out of Hubs to put 787s at.
It’s only a matter of time (read:years) before they give us something besides these eyesore A330s.

LGA wasn’t even on my Radar lol good point tho even tho we are all sure LGA more than likely wouldn’t see a 787.

Seriously. In any case, the 332 is already hands-down the most comfortable AA widebody in economy, unless more humidity is really really your thing.

AA is starting once daily winter 787 service between PHX-ORD starting in January that's speculated to be extended into the summer season, so realistically it would be JFK, CLT, MIA, LGA, and we can't forget good ole' DCA!

I would feel the opposite. Rather be in 2-3-2 seating with wider seats than 3-3-3 seating that is very narrow.

YIKES we've all heard both sides why the need to start this every mention of people preference? GET OVER IT please.

In J I love some of the J seats the best on the 767's. The seat that swivels into a desk is a great ride.. I'll miss it.
