Put the planes where the money is, and they’d get great utilization.

Can't be used at HND; no A380s allowed there. These aircraft will be dedicated to NRT-HNL. But... currently NH operates 2 daily NRT-HNL round-trips and a single daily HND-HNL round-trip, all with the 789. The densest NH 789 has 246 seats; the Flying Honu will have 520 seats, well over twice as many. With three round-trip flights, and even assuming NH discontinues HND-HNL, we're still talking about more than doubling capacity. That seems like a bit much.

Feels to me that they've added the bar counters to Y & W because they don't feel like they can sell more seats. I also am skeptical of them being able to sell ~220 daily premium economy seats each way when they currently offer maybe 50.

This is the most gorgeous passenger plane flying today. Perfect union of form and aesthetic (and destination).

That's the announced plan... dedicated to JP/HNL, specifically NRT/HNL (at first?).
My guess is that the Honu will also fly from KIX (and if HND ever gets an A380 gate...), but it's "Honu for Hawaii".

Agreed!

I'm afraid HNL Gates 29 and 34 and the Wiki bus are going to be a let-down. The mods to Gates 29 and 34 were $31.7 million of PFC collections (plus other funding, total of $34.9 million) ... oh wait, the renovations aren't finished yet.

Exactly my thought the moment I saw it. Surely the livery is inspired by the Beluga XL.

So this blue one is named "Lani", but it doesn't look like they put the name anywhere on the aircraft, unless it's hard to see. Also curious to know whether green or orange will be next. The renderings didn't show registrations; anyone have info?

Greetings Folks,
In my opinion I believe that the Management at ANA should be congratulated for looking beyond their corporate image particularly as this aircraft has a level of prestige attached to it.
It will be interesting to observe what the. Ext two aircraft come up with!

The 3 Honus will be for the Honolulu route exclusively. I am sure they will do occasional flights to other long haul destinations every now and then for publicity.

This will steal a lo of the JAL market on the Hawaii route. Honu is a novelty. Passengers will want to fly on the Honu just out of curiosity.

Plane spotters will have a great time!

Bonjour, Madame Concorde. Good to have you here.

I agree, this is the right thing to do. ANA understands the way to market the A380. And they had other genius special liveries before.
It's remarkable that multi billion marketing agencies cannot come up with more of this. Even the "boring" and "ugly" Beluga XL could be made to look "cute" with the smiling face. Most airlines are just not innovative enough it seems.

I'm wondering if ANA will use all 3 every day NRT - HNL, or just do two flights and keep one frame free ? Or just have all the 3 frames used on certain days only ? Will also be interesting to see if they do domestics out of NRT for a short while for crew experience first plus the publicity.

That is an amazing looking aircraft and shows what can be done with some creativity, lateral thinking, and GOOD management.

I could see this plane (and it’s future sisters) creating a craze in japan and around the world. This will be a phenomenally successful venture for ANA.

I would fly to Japan just to be able to see and fly on this bird.

Come on all you ultra boring airline execs, start being creative with your liveries and make the world a more colourful and interesting place!

Total praise to ANA for this!

For me it doesn't look terrible, certainly better than the Euro whites flying around, but I'm not really feeling it, I had a small hope they would do one in a star wars theme.

According to ANA press release,
3 times per week (Tu, Fr, Su) from May 24 2019 til June 30 2019.
Frequency will increase to 10 per week (1 daily plus 3 per week)
when "Kai" (2nd A380) starts operation from July 1 2019.

The flying time between TYO and HNL is 7 hours one way, 9 hours the other to entirely consume (with turn time) one frame for each round trip each day. That'd leave one on the ground on Tokyo as a spare?

You have to remember there will be fleet downtime, technical issues, major maintenance that means all 3 frames won't be available all of the time. I'd expect the 3 frames to operate other limited Long Haul operations on the side, where scheduling allows. While these have been specifically designed for Hawaii, and should be very successful in that mission, it ultimately comes down to demand.

I would imagine that UA will drop NRT-HNL once there is more than 1 380 operating on the lane. With all the expansion UA is doing they would easily make use of a freed up 77E.

A drinking friend tells me a local NZ company is producing a bespoke safety video for the aircraft, with the three depicted as characters. Plus a spin off TV cartoon series, with an environmental message. And toys and other items based on the aircraft characters. Surely there are some ideas here for other A380 operators.

Excellent marketing. I wish them all the best. Seems like a good long term strategy if it takes off. Hopefully spurring additional small buys for new routes with new characters/themes. I'll buy the toys.

I am sorry, I am going to buck consensus on this forum by declaring that it’s uttterly ghastly. Infantile, in fact.

However, I understand that I am not its target customer, and that it does actually play to its target - Japanese holidaymakers - very well. I also appreciate that it is not just another boring Eurowhite livery on an A380, so kudos to ANA. I am grateful that it exists and that it makes the skies less boring.
I only turn left when boarding aircraft. Well, mostly. All right, sometimes. OH OKAY - rarely.

Not digging the blue font on plain white tail. Reminds me of the lifeless Malaysian A380 livery. But other than that the fuselage paint looks great.

I've NEVER liked the looks of the Whale, but this could make me change my mind. It really looks nice! The aircraft is just so large that its hard to really make it into a consistent, cohesive canvas. This scheme changes that, in my view. As a scale model builder, I would build a 1/144th model of this bird. The Braniff A380 in What If colors is almost ready to start. I'd love to build this one, too.

Yes, you are. Now go sit in the corner and think about what you've said.

So it took 21 days to paint this? That's quite an investment.

I'm not a huge Whale fan (pun not intended), but that has to be one of the best liveries on the A380 by far. It fits the airframe perfectly. As a self-proclaimed Boeing fan, I can admit that I truly can't wait to see the other colors as they roll out.

bit of both. the a380 looks really bad to start, and then this disgusting mess that ana is calling a liver is slapped on top.

Then why do you bother coming into threads like this? Do you get enjoyment of spreading your dislike? This is a aviation enthusiast forum. Not Airbus or Boeing or (?) Specific. The flame wars are getting ridiculous, and found in far too many threads. Simultaneously. You can hate the A380 all you want, but you are very salty if you cant see any beauty in that livery. What was your submission?

Perhaps a more manufacturer Specific forum is better suited to you folks? It may make all our time here more enjoyable.
It's just a plane. It has no direct impact on your life, and does not come out of your pocket. So why the hate? You dont have to fly on it.

Nust as everyone else is free to say that they like this livery, I'm free to say that this is an ugly livery on an ugly plane. Deal with it.

You are. But you weren't going to like it either way. There have been renderings of what it would look like long before. So you are just trolling. Grow up.

Finally, a Japanese A380! I may consider just going to Japan to ride it to/from Hawaii instead of some crappy 767.

I love how they used the very awkward A380 windscreen as the turtle nostrils. Very creative way of turning a potential negative into an integrated positive.

The only quibble I have is that the little turtles on the side are painted with a more cartoony rounded snout so they don't look like they are the same turtles. They should have used a more extended beak on those to match the look created by the A380 nose on the giant turtle.
Of all the things to worry about... the Wookie has no pants.

Indeed. Novelty liveries are just that: novelties. They go stale VERY quickly. Such a shame: the standard ANA livery would've looked VERY smart on the A380, IMHO.

Kind of like the Hello Kitty and Pokemon specials. Not like those have been used for decades with increasing popularity...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't all the Pokémon liveries been dropped? If they, or the Hello Kitty liveries were that popular, or good, surely they would've been rolled-out across their respective fleets?

They are the Christmas jumpers of the airline world.
