This is already being discussed on the WOW financial thread. But yes, the report is correct and all other Icelandic media outlets have also reported it.

To summarize, WOW is trimming its fleet down from 20 to 11 aircraft, and the aircraft leaving the fleet include the A330s. No A330s = no LAX/DEL (and no resumption of SFO/DFW next summer obviously.)

What Canadian/US stations are they going to keep? It seems like they are cutting many stations heading westbound.

Well, there's another thread going that surmises Chicago will be canceled because there's no way to book it, though no official announcement has been made. Boston can be booked for months to come (I tried it). not sure about anything else.

This is one of the few routes that I wouldn't be surprised to see FI pick up over the long run... but overall, this'll likely be the norm, to cull the ridiculous over-expansion experienced at KEF over the last two years.
I myself, suspect a more prosaic motive... ~Thranduil

WOW Air suspends DEL from 21jan and LAX from 14jan. Flights to both cities have been taken out of the gds system effective from those dates.

DEL route only lasted less than two months!

I think US/Canada routes slated to stay are BOS, BWI, YYZ, EWR and maybe YUL/DTW. Basically the core routes they they’ve operated since they first started operating across the Atlantic. I can’t see the first 4 of these going unless of course WOW goes under. Flying just Europe-Iceland without TATL connections was never profitable for WOW, their best years were 2014-2016 when they only had A321s and operated those core routes only (corresponding markets in Europe were LGW, AMS, CPH and CDG). Skuli, their CEO, has been talking alot about just pushing the reset button and going back to what worked for them in that 2014-2016 period before they got widebodies.

Btw, they're having a huge -50% OFF ticket sales if you book a flight this winter. I've tried it from CDG to US/Canada, I guess it should be the case for other routes

I hope that this will help ensure their viability. Trying to do too much too soon doesn’t seem to have worked. Keeping one family type and operating to the busier US destinations will hopefully assist in keeping costs down and protecting yields but competition is fierce. I hope it works out for them.

My opinion based on history and current observations:

WOW is beginning to resemble Braniff in their final days. WOW's route, scheduling and fleet actions are becoming increasingly unpredictable and unstable. The choices made by WOW's leadership team are creating an even greater appearance of financial desperation.

How much time does WOW have left? How long before WOW ceases operations and strands thousands of passengers?

Anyone who books a new reservation on WOW at this point must be crazy.

It does fell that way. American media is telling people their trip may be cancelled if they book WOW Air. That is about the worst thing for their marketing to deal with

So then what's FI going to get in their "merger/buyout" from WW if/when it goes belly-up? Just the elimination of their main competitor?

Suspended WW routes due to current de-fleet

Fri Dec 14, 2018 2:42 pm

Since there are quite a few threads going on at the same time all about WW routes, I think it could be interesting to put together all available info:

-BCN: last bookable flight 06/01/2019
-LAX: last bookable flight 20/01/2019
-DEL: last bookable flight 19/01/2019
-ORD: last bookable flight 21/01/2019
-SFO: not resuming as summer seasonal

It'll be cool if we could keep adding from here. Looks like the third weekend of January they'll experience heavy de-fleet, with 3 routes to the US dropping.

If you actually click a date and go to look at fare options they all say no flights for YVR. WOW has a bunch of flights were on the home screen when picking a date it looks available (because at one time it was) but it really isn't once you hit serach.

What do you think? They are dropping to 11 aircraft, so in the summer during the European evenings they might have 4 in Europe (to TFS / CDG / AMS / STN), 1 held back, then 6 in the US- BOS BWI YYZ YUL YVR EWR - there won't be any room for any of these experimental routes they launched in 2018.

They can operate to way more than that the transatlantic inbounds can each continue onto to Europe they could literally operate to 20 cities with 11 aircraft and have one spare.

It might give them breathing room on their longer routes and, more importantly, alleviate the crowding problem during bank times at KEF. However, FI's main competitors have always been, and still are, the larger airlines flying nonstop TATL.

I know there's a guessing thread going on about Chicago, and another thread to discuss WOW finances. The purpose of this thread is to discuss some just-published route cancellations. I think it's ridiculous that some people think we all should dig through ancient threads to find relevant information.

The only new route for KEF in 2019 is seasonal ARN-KEF on SAS.

Could the number of PAX in KEF decrease in 2019? Should Keflavík PAX numbers be used as a thermometer for the global economy? :)

I don't think it'll decrease, however I think we will see a shift in airlines.

Should WOW Air shrink further or even collapse, this will free up capacity for other airlines. No doubt that capacity will be taken up. Those airlines don't contribute to the hub function of Keflavik, so Icelandair has that to themselves again. For those other airlines it's just a destination.

There have been various forecasts by Icelandic economists in the past week, with the conclusion being everything from continued growth to a 15% decrease in pax. Only time will tell. However, in a recent shareholder meeting management stated that FI was ready to grow 35% with its current resources using the new bank structure.

Btw, FI is also adding KEF-DUS in March. Original start date was last October, but they moved it back by 5 months due to restructuring and waiting for more MAXes to arrive. IIRC, it's supposed to be year round.

It is also worth mentioning that other than that SAS flight, there is not a single route from non-Icelandic carriers. Very different from previous years when every year there were easily 5-6-7 new routes from foreign carriers. No easyJet, no Wizz Air... nothing new. In fact Wizz Air has cancelled a few routes, Vueling chopped FCO-KEF...

It looks like 2018 has been "KEF Peak".
