I'm not familiar with their plans.

I'm sure the are most likely swapping 767 eqpt for these 787 , however do they plan to upgrade their product on board with a full premium economy / business class product to compete with AC or are they more LCC ?

Again, I'm not familiar with their onboard offerings.

Is “The Spirit of Canada” and the proudly Canadian flag new with 787 or do they use it in all their marketing? I like those additions to the livery.

The B767 will be around for a while longer. The B787s will be operating YYC-YYZ initially at the end for Feb and then YYC-LGW, DUB & CDG this summer. Lie flat pods and the the front and premium economy, along with economy.

Although I've seen that video before, I enjoy seeing it again and again. Can't wait to burn some miles and sample their new International Business Class on the 789. WS is really upping their game. Thrilled that WS and DL continue to become closer partners!

Did you see their new television advert?

Also they seem to be enhancing their narrowbody 737nexgen and 737max fleet as well with their "Premium" cabin https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vg7GA-5AMI8

A livery and tag line seemily inspired by Qantas and a TV ad that seems remarkably imprired by a Southwest advert of a few years back.

Wasn't there also 'The Spirit of Delta' which was launched when the airline acquired the first B762 from employees' voluntary salary cuts?

Inspiration is everywhere. In the WS advert, the script is unique, it is their own. I quite enjoyed as it clearly demonstrates a re-birth of the brand. I tend not to dwell on how similar an artistic direction is with past works ,as everything in life , is a derivative in itself.

The flag and slogan are both part of the new livery and also feature on the 737 MAX. The other side of the aircraft has the slogan in French ("L'esprit du Canada").

Inspiration is indeed everywhere. Inspiration is one thing that Canada does not lack. However I think ripping off other people’s work is a bit lazy.

Not sure if "The Spirit of Delta" was ever a marketing campaign by Delta but rather a name given to a specific aircraft, B762 N102DA. As you stated, the aircraft was paid for by the employees. Now retired "The Spirit of Delta" is on display at the Delta museum in Atlanta repainted in it's original livery. During it's life it wore the original Widget, 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Wavy Gravy and 75th Anniversary retro colors but always had the name "The Spirit of Delta" painted on it.

Beautiful plane. I was surprised to see the registration as C-GUDH. Thought that with this being the first 787-9 frame for WS that it would have ended in 'A.'

I love it! Thanks for sharing. Great commercial all the way around.

In some ways it was the same feel as some of DL's recent commercials in their 'Keep Climbing" series.

“The Spirit of....”is hardly unique to Qantas, airlines, or transportation in general. If the fact that Qantas uses it means that no other airline can, then I think a shit-ton of slogans and paint schemes need to go in the trash.

Seriously, it’s really not that big of a deal, and I doubt that literally more than a handful of WS passengers will notice or care about the similarity enough to let it bother them.

What’s with the flag up front? Looks tacky. Seems to me that they are doing everything in their power to just let people know what country they’re actually from. Seems to be a real marketing concern for them.

Other than that not bad.

Aren’t their 767s ex QF too? Lol. I wish they hadnt signed up with DL, and instead had gone to OneWorld!! Would have loved to have see them connecting with QF, maybe even flying to AU one day!

They just signed a codeshare with QF. I could see them starting YVR-SYD with the 787, it would be a good fit with feed at both ends.

WestJet uses tail numbers to identify aircraft as opposed to using sequential registrations. This aircraft tail number is 901.

The Proudly with Canadian flag is on the planes in the old livery too, just by the rear doors, it was moved to the front on the new livery.

I like the interior as well. Slick and modern. Love the colour scheme.

Having said that, they have a long way to go to attract the lucrative business traveller. I doubt AC will let them gain a serious foothold with business travellers. Limited lounge access (though I hear they will have WS-branded lounges soon), status levels and privileges that don’t match or compare with Altitude (such as the concierge service, Signature Lounge in YYZ, priority baggage, etc.). AC hasn’t even revealed their new FF program yet, and they know very well what WS is trying to do. AC will respond in kind.

This time around, Westjet can’t be running to the competition bureau whining about how aggressive AC is competing, especially considering how aggressive they are responding with Swoop vs Flair et al.

While AC is focused on premium/business travellers, WS is running in all directions. They look disorganized, and frankly analysts agree. There is little growth opportunities at the low end of the market (Swoop) due to airport and related taxes, and they will hit a ceiling very quickly with business travellers as AC will respond very aggressively. Their recent investor day did little to win over analysts. For investors, WS is not a very attractive investment at the moment.

I have no problem with WS growing into an international airline. However, they should focus on what they are good at - transporting people at a reasonable price. Their 787s should be laid out in WS Plus and economy seating only. WS will never be seen as a “premium” airline, and nobody outside of Canada knows who they are (no matter how large they make the flag at the nose of the plane).

I suspect they have to somehow pay for these new planes, and maybe J-revenue is the answer. I just think they are under estimating AC’s response.

Yeah but it’s in the back in the traditional location. This is up front in kind of an awkward spot.

The “Proudly Canadian” has been a staple on the livery since day 1.

I too am curious what is under the grey stripe.

It would be nice if it were named after Clive Beddoe. I am sure 22 years ago when he founded Westjet, he never imagined they would be buying an airplane where one engine alone is worth more than the three 737-200s they used to begin operations.

Sadly, the tradition of naming aircraft has all but ended in Canada. The last I can think of were the 747-400s of Canadian Airlines named after important people of CP, PW and WD. Grant McConachie, Russ Baker, Rhys Eyton and Max Ward.
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!

I miss the days of naming airplanes. National (merged with Pan Am), Pan Am, Piedmont just to name a few. Always nice to spot one you hadn't seen before or to look for a specific one.

Agreed, I liked naming aircraft as well. However, considering how overly sensitive we as a society have become, I don’t think we should be naming anything after a person anymore (streets, highways, schools, or even airplanes). We can’t handle it.

Nordair named B-737-200 C-GNDR after Terry Fox. Sadly when Nordair merged into Canadian Pacific the aircraft became the Empress of Florida. Terry was one of the all time great Canadians and it would be great to see his name on an aircraft again.

CB is one of four co-founders.

Without the other 3, WestJet would not exist today.

Meh...
It looked much better on the rendering. Disappointed.
KoreanAir is still the winner for best looking livery on the 787...

I hope you're kidding

Livery looks a lot better on the 787 vs the 737! Love the "spirit of Canada" and "proudly Canadian" details!

Being a Canadian airline, I really think there ought to be a 'Spirit of Radio' somewhere in the fleet !

I think this looks really sharp. I'm a bit worried that we won't see it for long though, especially given their first route announcements. To me, it shows that they aren't confident in their ability to compete with AC, but I truly hope I'm wrong. I wish them lots of success and I hope to get the chance to try out the new product soon!

I like the interior as well. Slick and modern. Their 787s should be laid out in WS Plus and economy seating only. WS will never be seen as a “premium” airline, and nobody outside of Canada knows who they are (no matter how large they make the flag at the nose of the plane).

I would never say never. Don't under estimate , time will tell . As well J class is a new source of revenue for WestJet in whole. In the investor day presentation, it was noted the first 3 787's are planned for a sale / lease back at favourable terms.
