"Christian" Airline Receives OK To Start-Up

Wed Dec 19, 2018 3:44 pm

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has accepted an application from a private operator to become a full-fledged commercial airline. The company would focus on Christian missionaries traveling the globe to evangelize.

Of all the crazy things I have ever heard, this is by far the most ludicrous. Granted, there's not much detail here, but it was still good for a laugh.

I was going to add an analogy like "you've got a better chance of _____", but I couldn't think of anything that wasn't political or religious.

Sounds like a charter airline really.... And I dont think they have to worry about them heading right to Uganda on any MD-8X plane... But yes... what a ridiculous article...

Wasn't there a Vatican backed airline in Europe also focusing on pilgrims?

As for this one, the article makes it seem like they'll be a proper schedule airline which is kinda strange to me. A charter airline focusing on missionaries would surely make much more sense, it would probably also help avoid any potential discrimination issues if they don't sell tickets to the public. Anyway, I can't see this outfit ever taking off, much less be successful.

Ridiculous indeed. The author is apparently unfamiliar with Haaj charters, which I see as functionally equivalent.

There's an operator in Florida flying missionaries to the Caribbean. I believe that they're operating in a bit of a regulatory gray area (they can't accept money for the flights, it has to be paid for by donations). So this is probably an effort to do a similar thing, but with a larger plane and probably the ability to actually collect money for the flights.

The Florida operator has two turboprop-converted DC-3's and obviously they allow the missionaries to bring a lot of supplies with them.

Vatican's state bank IOR owns a stake of Mistral Air, that flies religious charters (Lourdes etc. with 734s IIRC) and postal cargos (with ATRs). The other owner of Mistral Air is Poste Italiane SpA Italy's postal service.

Is this something like the many Islamic airlines that follow Sharia laws on their flights of head scarf for female FA, no pork, no alcohol, some Islamic prayers at the start of flight or some Quran verses, and specific zones on the flight to do the namaz or bowing down prayer in certain directions, etc. (?)

This reminds me so much of a picture on this site. It had Jesus written on the aircraft. For the life of me, I cannot find this picture.

Why would they need an OK to start up? A real Christian airline would simply rise.

Looks like this is the MD-83 from the video. This is an interesting idea, just wonder how successful it will be. Got to give the man props, "It's a bold strategy Cotton, let's see how it plays out for them."

Or, when a plane breaks down, they'll just say a prayer and all problems will be solved, Nepal Airlines style:

Oh, and the in-flight meal menu will be Unleavened Bread and Red Grape Wine? Or Five loaves of bread + two fish divided among the whole plane?

Seriously, I have located the pics of the engine-less DC-8 painted with "The Lord's Airline" titles, that sat . . . and sat . . . at MIA a decade-and-a-half ago.

I also remember reading a short article in the magazine Christianity Today. They didn't give The Lord's Airline much of a chance, either. That's partly because the airline's owners were determined to fly to Jerusalem's Atarot Airport (JRS), NOT Ben Gurion International in Tel Aviv. Atarot has been closed since the year 2,000, and its single runway is only 6,447 feet long. Here are some links to JRS . . .

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atarot_Airport
http://www.lowshot.com/product.aspx?p_id=82631

And, there was another group of investors that tried to start up a "Christian" charter airline, and this one was with a Convair 990 Coronado!

A Christian airline?! That’s too funny. A Jesus character will be on the safety video. Mary will have to put on own oxygen mask before baby Jesus, our savior, I guess. As for safety instructions, there will be appropriate bible versus in case of emergency should one forget. Heaven brochures/magazines. Exclusive television of the 700 Club with crazy man Pat Robertson and the purple haired lady (or is she in jail? I forgot). All jokes aside, would they be under current US law not to discriminate against certain groups such as other religions, races, sexual orientation, etc? Or would they be exempt? With this administration, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were. What has this world come to?

I don’t see what’s funny about this at all. All startup airlines are a difficult proposition. Many well funded and experienced industry executives have failed with start ups.

Many of the comments here are not about aviation but an attack on Christianity. The same fervor isn’t used regarding Muslim airlines and Haaj flights. I haven’t seen jokes cracked about maryter pilots. There is a distinct double standard.

One of the very first rules in business is identify and serve a niche or a completely unserved segment of the market. Basic business 101. With the number of Christians world-wide and specifically in North, Central and South America there certainly is a valid niche for this service. Don’t forget about the impact of the “moral majority” in the US. A substantial niche indeed.

Realistically no airline start up is likely to succeed long term. The percentages are small. This one probably won’t last long either.

In this case the niche seems like a better business proposition than say taking 50 seaters and trying to be an LCC, ULCC or premium business carrier. How many times has that been tried? How about Pan Am part how many, Eastern three excetera excetera.

At the end of the day we get to see a MD80 series plane back in the air with at least a chance of being successful on a small scale. Jobs will be created and the economy will benefit from this effort.

This is probably as likely to succeed as an eleven year old girl with an inoperable and terminal brain tumor is likely to have the tumor completely disappear without a trace or explanation by doctors......oh wait!!???

Merry Christmas

Well my reference was to all the airlines from Muslim countries that have their airlines follow these practices to some degree. Some comply all rules and some just few elements. And these are major airlines I'm talking of.

This is the first link I got of on Google of Jeezra Airlines of Kuwait :

According to the OP, the focus of this airline is transporting missionaries worldwide.

Firstly, this is very niche.

Secondly, some of the Moral Majority types have there own planes.

Thirdly, not sure what this airline will offer which is not already available, is it cheaper or fly to different places etc.

Finally, is it only aimed at US missionaries.
