Norwegian to postpone 787 pilot training program

A pilot I follow on Twitter posted the following letter and it looks like Norwegian is going to be culling the pilot ranks.

It doesn't look like they are laying off any pilots currently flying the 787. They refer to 2019 courses, ergo probably pilots who were hired or internally upgraded (or received notice of successfully passing the interview), with the plan to induct them on the 787 line-course in 2019.

Still seems odd given the whole idea of their strategy being viable is to grow into profitability. Without the growth the whole house of cards comes down, though that may be happening sooner rather than later if other rumors turn out to be true. (namely that they have reengaged with IAG for talks)

So, are we going to be seeing Norwegian defer 787 deliveries?

Or, are pilots going to be coming in/on to fly, but just from other locations/tracks (not internal promotions)?

Of a side note - if Norwegian transfers aircraft (from DU {"Long Haul"} to DI {"Air UK Ltd"}) do those pilots count as one employee pool? Or could we see a shift in aircraft display as a layoff at one branch, and hiring at that other?

On the other hand, Vistara is making B787 pilots fly A320 for now, as it doesn't want them to leave. They will be getting first B787 towards end of next year

The Norwegian supporters will always claim "nothing to see here". Meanwhile everything points towards a collapse. Don't be surprised if you have tickets for Norwegian in the future and when you turn up at the airport Norwegian doesn't exist. Caveat Emptor

That may be a key point. Norwegian has multiple subsidiaries and airlines. One may be contracting and another may be growing while planes are moving around.

If the notice about cancelling 787 courses means that they will be cancelling line training courses, as I suspect, then that means no new 787 pilots. You can't get more pilots onto the type without a line-course, regardless of where they come from or prior experience. Even an experienced 787 pilot will need to pass it.

I'm not an expert, but Norwegian tends to hire its pilots through OSM. This notice is from OSM to the pilots, not from any particular branch of Norwegian.

Norwegian are cancelling training courses due to having five 787s AOG with RR engine issues, and thus a temporary surplus of pilots. Nobody is being laid off, the notices were to people not currently employed by the company, awaiting the start of type rating courses. But why let facts get in the way of A.net verbal diarrhoea, it must mean they're on the brink of going bankrupt.
