Lufthansa Lady at CLT

Mon Dec 24, 2018 10:21 am

Many years ago I visited the aircraft viewing area at CLT and fairly frequently. There was a woman there who "greeted" the Luthansa flight from Munich everyday. It's been a while since I've gone and I was wondering about this woman. Does she still go on a daily basis to "welcome" the flight? Who is she, and does anyone know why she does this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xA6h3bXWV_Q

--

Speaking of the overlook, is it still there? I heard it closed for redevelopment of the airport.
People are saying. Believe me.

According to comments on some youtube videos she comes and does this because her son was killed on an LH flight. No idea if it is true or not.

She is only out there when it’s an A340.

Hello everybody! I literally pulled over to the side of the highway to reply to this, I’m currently driving up I85 from Charlotte to head home to Richmond for Christmas.

Ok, so, this lady.

She’s out there nearly everyday for every arrival, and she usually will stick around for the departure as well but she doesn’t typically come out and pray(?) for it taking off.

There have been a few reasons we’ve heard and theorized about her, the most widely believed is that either her son or husband was somehow killed in a Lufthansa crash (no idea which one) and she comes out to pray to it/for them.

She often screams and cries during her singing. So there’s that.

A personal theory I’ve come up with is that she’s praying for good luck. After a quick google search one day while at the overlook with a buddy we learned that the Crane is a symbol of good luck in the Native American culture.

But she cries, so I dunno how that fits into it.

She comes with a white gentleman who has told people she’s not even Native American. So there’s that.

If people confront her, or even simply ask she’s been known to scream and spit at them.

I’ll give you guys a funny tidbit, the company I work for works with Lufthansa, and a few weeks ago they brought the A346. We had some time to kill so a buddy of mine and I went over to look at it.

Talking to the ramp crew when the pilot came out for his post arrival inspection he came over to us and one of the ramp guys brought her up, in short the pilot said she’s somewhat of an urban legend back in MUC amongst the LH Pilots. They keep hearing about this “crazy lady who sings and dances when we land.”

Oh well, it’s not our place to judge.
What the reason, she has hers.

...one time Lufthansa landed 36C and missed the high speed turn off so it rolled out by the overlook and she about had a heart attack. ;)

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

The overlook is still there and will be moved to the south end of the airfield between what is now 36C and the new runway under construction.

The last LH branded flight that crashed I think was in Poland in 1993, and there was the one that crashed in Nairobi in the 70s.

When was the last time a LH craft crashed with mass casualties?? The early 70s? Maybe she is paying homage to a lost brother/ husband?

For many, Lufthansa represents a direct connection to Germany. For me, seeing an LH plane represents an immediate portal to Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, and the many good times had while traveling. Who knows, maybe someone she knows died in Germany and a LH aircraft is closest thing she has to being there

She kicks and spits and refuses to talk to anyone who approaches her while she screams gobbledygook at a plane landing. She's mentally ill and has some sort of delusion that's associated with this flight. There's no greater meaning than that.

Everyone putting these feel good ideas (with zero proof what so ever) are overlooking her clear and severe mental illness.

How nice that you have it (and her) all figured out. What makes you such an authority? And saying "mental illness is crazy, folks" like you did in your earlier post doesn't make you sound so credible, FYI.

It isn't much of a stretch to suggest that someone who speaks in tongues to greet the arrival of a German airliner each day is a few cans short of a six pack.

I've lived in Charlotte over 6 years now, and spot frequently at the CLT overlook. In all the times I've been there, I think there was one day when she wasn't there for the LH arrival. She does it no matter what aircraft, A330 or A340. She heads over to the fence when it is on final and begins her singing/chanting/crying, continuing until it arrives at the terminal.

CLTRampRat wrote:

She waits in the car until it pushes from the gate, then heads back to the fence and starts her thing again, continuing through take off, until it is out of sight on departure.

I have NEVER seen any inappropriate behavior from her towards another person. If people approach her, she holds up a hand in a "stop" motion, and walks away. I've seen little kids - 3 or 4 years old - stand next to her and emulate what she is doing. She simply ignores them and goes about her business.

I've heard all the theories about why she does it, from the crane on the tail to losing a loved one on board an LH flight, but no one seems to know the real story. I've thought about approaching her companion while she is doing her thing, but at the end of the day, it's clearly something personal, and she's not hurting anyone, so I just let them have their privacy.

Atypically she does not try to mend her hurt by shooting at the airliner. Quite the boon, isn't it?

Because I've seen her with my own eyes and in many videos on Youtube. Look at the situation from an independent eye:

A person shows up to an airport every single day regardless of the weather to chant, dance, and speak in an unintelligible language (not any native language) about a European Airline landing in North Carolina. When approached, she runs away and refuses to interact with anyone.

The story about her being native American paying some sort of homage to dead relatives is based completely on her appearance and nothing else as she is too unstable to converse with when approached.

I think its fair for me to cite mental illness as a likely cause of such behavior.

I'm not sure that is the polite response she seemed to be good mentally

I was there at the overlook this past Thanksgiving on that black Friday. I was a mere 10 feet from here. I didn't speak to her but watched her closely while the lh330 was landing. It's definitely a chant I was intrigued to say the least.

How does she know it is a LH plane? Is it a visual thing or does she track them?

At first it seems odd but then again just waiting in all weathers for yet another photo of an Airbus could be seen as odd. It would be interesting to know why one airline only.

Ok, Mr. SJW.

You don't need a PhD next to your name to be able to figure out that someone who chants and worships one particular flight every day doesn't have all of her dogs barking.

I've never seen it, but I imagine they may have a scanner in the car. She usually gets out of the car and heads over to the fence about the time LH checks in with tower on final, and again when they push from the gate for departure. Seems reasonable to think they are listening to tower and ramp/ground to know when it is moving.

You're right, I can't confirm with total certainty the language the mysterious woman is chanting every single day as the Lufthansa flight lands in Charlotte regardless of weather or delay.

Go watch a dozen or two videos of her (or more) and you'll instantly recognize she's not speaking or singing in any language what so ever. Its just random musical notes that sound like native singing with no structure at all. Go listen to actual singing from any number of tribes and you'll be able to see this is just tones and not actual language. Now, she could be summoning spirits through her actions but again, that's not something virtually any native american culture does. Especially not when the Lufthansa flight from Munich lands every day at the Charlotte airport.

Then again, I might be wrong. Maybe she just took a liking to this particular flight and decided to do this every single day without fail in all weather while running away from people who try and talk to her. Who knows.

Interesting lady. I don't think it would be fair to characterize her as mentally ill without knowing why she's doing it. What she's doing is meaningful to her for some reason.

If she's mentally ill - then most of the world is also mentally ill. In the West, people who are deeply religious do things that seem just as ridiculus as what she's doing. And outside the west, people are even more spiritual, performing ceremonies and rituals that look completely strange and meaningless to an outsider. Yet, to that person it's the most natural thing in the world to do.

In my opinion LH must have done something good to her and she is just wishing them good luck. Could be some kind of religious vow and this explains the ritual.

I have to say I agree with you. Common sense is dead when too many 'educated elite' around. Oops, I might have just offended half of the forum.

I'd be more concerned that you may have offended yourself by saying your not educated or elite. No offense just saying think about the statement you made.

You say its not any Native Language...................I'm curious how you are so certain? There are well over 200 Native American languages spoken in North America.

Who knows.

You realize that a language is not always talking. There is a tribe in Africa that communicates via clicking sounds that they vary. every variation has a different meaning. So you have no way of knowing if it is a language or not. Especially as the video's have shown some patterns in the chants.

How about the days when the flight has been cancelled? It must have happened at some point during the last 15 years.

Another video of her: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0TP-XBPplw

She is similar to that homeless guy at the LAX In & Out who lives in his van.
In the 20+ times I've been to LAX, *he is always there*.
Creepy.
People are saying. Believe me.

Well if as suggested the lady suffered a personal loss following a Lufthansa aircraft incident then it wouldn't be beyond the realms of reason to suppose her actions are the result of a protracted or depressive bereavement process, something in itself that can have a profound negative effect on the long term mental welfare of the sufferer. This little 'ceremony' could be a coping mechanism or a perceived spiritual/emotional link to her lost loved one. Professional bereavement counselling may be of benefit, but then again there may be some sort of cultural/theological influence at play too. Derisory comments along the lines of "a few cans short of a six pack" etc really have no place in this discussion however and really show people as being somewhat ignorant.

I doubt she travels, at least by air.
Also regardless of why, if she did make it on a plane and started singing and praying during the flight.. well.. it probably wouldn't go over so well.

According to comments on some youtube videos she comes and does this because her son was killed on an LH flight. No idea if it is true or not.
