Many years ago I visited the aircraft viewing area at CLT and fairly frequently. There was a woman there who "greeted" the Luthansa flight from Munich everyday. It's been a while since I've gone and I was wondering about this woman. Does she still go on a daily basis to "welcome" the flight? Who is she, and does anyone know why she does this?

Hello everybody! I literally pulled over to the side of the highway to reply to this, I’m currently driving up I85 from Charlotte to head home to Richmond for Christmas.

Ok, so, this lady.

She’s out there nearly everyday for every arrival, and she usually will stick around for the departure as well but she doesn’t typically come out and pray(?) for it taking off.

There have been a few reasons we’ve heard and theorized about her, the most widely believed is that either her son or husband was somehow killed in a Lufthansa crash (no idea which one) and she comes out to pray to it/for them.

She often screams and cries during her singing. So there’s that.

A personal theory I’ve come up with is that she’s praying for good luck. After a quick google search one day while at the overlook with a buddy we learned that the Crane is a symbol of good luck in the Native American culture.

But she cries, so I dunno how that fits into it.

She comes with a white gentleman who has told people she’s not even Native American. So there’s that.

If people confront her, or even simply ask she’s been known to scream and spit at them.

I’ll give you guys a funny tidbit, the company I work for works with Lufthansa, and a few weeks ago they brought the A346. We had some time to kill so a buddy of mine and I went over to look at it.

Talking to the ramp crew when the pilot came out for his post arrival inspection he came over to us and one of the ramp guys brought her up, in short the pilot said she’s somewhat of an urban legend back in MUC amongst the LH Pilots. They keep hearing about this “crazy lady who sings and dances when we land.”

Oh well, it’s not our place to judge.

...one time Lufthansa landed 36C and missed the high speed turn off so it rolled out by the overlook and she about had a heart attack.

For many, Lufthansa represents a direct connection to Germany. For me, seeing an LH plane represents an immediate portal to Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, and the many good times had while traveling. Who knows, maybe someone she knows died in Germany and a LH aircraft is closest thing she has to being there

I was there at the overlook this past Thanksgiving on that black Friday. I was a mere 10 feet from here. I didn't speak to her but watched her closely while the lh330 was landing. It's definitely a chant I was intrigued to say the least.

I was there New Year's Eve 2005, ...think that's the first time I noticed her. She's not bothering anybody so let her be...why judge?

How does she know it is a LH plane? Is it a visual thing or does she track them?

At first it seems odd but then again just waiting in all weathers for yet another photo of an Airbus could be seen as odd. It would be interesting to know why one airline only.

I'm not sure how she keeps track of it. I'd imagine the gentleman that brings her keeps up with it.
She only gets out of the car as soon as he lines up for final. It's like clockwork.

It's bizarre to say the least, but she's doing no harm so hope folks just leave her alone.

You're right, I can't confirm with total certainty the language the mysterious woman is chanting every single day as the Lufthansa flight lands in Charlotte regardless of weather or delay.

Go watch a dozen or two videos of her (or more) and you'll instantly recognize she's not speaking or singing in any language what so ever. Its just random musical notes that sound like native singing with no structure at all. Go listen to actual singing from any number of tribes and you'll be able to see this is just tones and not actual language. Now, she could be summoning spirits through her actions but again, that's not something virtually any native american culture does. Especially not when the Lufthansa flight from Munich lands every day at the Charlotte airport.

Interesting lady. I don't think it would be fair to characterize her as mentally ill without knowing why she's doing it. What she's doing is meaningful to her for some reason.

If she's mentally ill - then most of the world is also mentally ill. In the West, people who are deeply religious do things that seem just as ridiculus as what she's doing. And outside the west, people are even more spiritual, performing ceremonies and rituals that look completely strange and meaningless to an outsider. Yet, to that person it's the most natural thing in the world to do.

Tell ya what, part of me wanted to see Lufthansa pick the new livery without the Crane on the tail just to see if she’d flip when it landed.

Maybe she was praying they would never change their iconic livery? So much for that.

Perhaps they are listening to »approach ».They are tuned to that frequency. If you look carefully at her face, judging from her characteristics she seems to be an Eskimo. In my opinion LH must have done something good to her and she is just wishing them good luck. Could be some kind of religious vow and this explains the ritual.

You realize that a language is not always talking. There is a tribe in Africa that communicates via clicking sounds that they vary. every variation has a different meaning. So you have no way of knowing if it is a language or not. Especially as the video's have shown some patterns in the chants.

How about the days when the flight has been cancelled? It must have happened at some point during the last 15 years.

Well if as suggested the lady suffered a personal loss following a Lufthansa aircraft incident then it wouldn't be beyond the realms of reason to suppose her actions are the result of a protracted or depressive bereavement process, something in itself that can have a profound negative effect on the long term mental welfare of the sufferer. This little 'ceremony' could be a coping mechanism or a perceived spiritual/emotional link to her lost loved one. Professional bereavement counselling may be of benefit, but then again there may be some sort of cultural/theological influence at play too. Derisory comments along the lines of "a few cans short of a six pack" etc really have no place in this discussion however and really show people as being somewhat ignorant.
