Should airport install SAM to defend drone attack?

Wed Dec 26, 2018 2:44 am

Recently several airports were distributed by undefined drone and cause thousands of flights delay and cancelled.

So once SAM installed when drone reach airports restricted area SAM cam shoot down immediately.

The danger to those on the ground makes this idea untenable, and more. You might want to do a little reading on SAMs

You might go back to designing new mega-airports for NYC and LON.

Let’s keep missiles away from airplanes. How about a drone that catches other drones. It just needs to get it tangled in a net or something.

Active measures would more likely resemble MTHEL than a SAM.

Yes! And if that fails we detonate a tactical nuclear device. And if that fails we detonate a strategic one. And if that fails the doomsday device will take care of the rest!

Shoot, why not a SAM on every street corner like Walgreens. No drone or bird or kite will be safe then!

Ridiculous + there already are efficient ways to dealing with drones. This just shows that some (if not most) airports have not implemented any method to dealing with this kind of issue

Sharklets. Sharklets with lasers on every plane. Like playing Defender, PEW PEW PEW!! Only younger pilots would need training to shoot.

Or an aircraft carrier style ramp. Now all you need are some efficient thrust vectoring systems to change course in-flight. Maybe strap a bald eagle to the back or sth.

A missile, even a tiny one, costs a fortune. A Stinger costs some 35.000 euros per missile, and that doesn't even include the cost of an unmanned launcher. The much newer British Starstreak cost the South Africans 60.000 euros per missile. Some sources suggest that the Swedish RBS-70 goes for 90.000 EUR. Thats a lot of money to fire at a drone that can be purchased for as little as 40 euros, and thats assuming these missiles are even effective against targets that small. A custom drone-killer missile could run up much more expensive per shot.
Then you have the issue of missiles missing the target and falling down on populated areas, possibly killing or harming more people than the drone ever would. Further, what if a missile is accidentally launched at an airliner?

Why not fit AA missiles on commercial planes, train the pilots and then they can take down a drone not only next to an airport but virtually everywhere?

So only 90% of the drones will get through, let's stick with sharks.

Obviously that's a really bad idea, but I think they could develop some kind of "security drone" which is capable of finding and following another drone. Perhaps it could have cameras that would find it and then automatically follow it back to wherever it was launched from, then film the person packing collecting it so that this person could be tracked down.

Where's Elon Musk when we really need him? After he sorts out that electric car and space rocket stuff he could get the price of a MANPAD shot down to a hundred quid or so.

Now that ISIS is defeated, we could ask all these unemployed fighters to assist the airport authorities in shooting down drones. ;-)

SAMs aren't a sure thing. They can miss or be jammed. We need something far more reliable. We need certainty! I say nuke the drone launching sites from orbit. its the only way to be sure.

True, SAMs aren’t a sure thing. Every airport should have its own

What about a treadmill before the ramp so they can really build up speed?
