Ethiopian Airlines opened a new route to Moscow on the 17th, nonstop from Addis Ababa. This route, when it was initially announced, was to operate via Istanbul using B788 aircraft. Istanbul launch has been delayed for lack of rights, and the first flight to DME operated using a B788. Subsequent flights and future flights are operating on an off with the B7M8. The route spans 3,200 mi in great circle distance.

That's a long flight. 737 MAX has been opening up many 2500nm + routes.
ADD-Moscow is going to be really stretching the range since ADD is at a high elevation. I wonder what type of weight restrictions they may see.

Absent ADD's elevation, this route is well below GOL's BSB-MCO and AR's EZE-PUJ, to the tune of 500 miles.

Time will tell. ET is in the business of connecting Africa to the rest of the world. We have wondered the same when it opened routes to Shanghai, Chengdu, Brussels and even Oslo.

I think this is a short term change due to 787s down for maintenance (mostly RR engine swaps).

Well at 7200ft of elevation, the MTOW will be reduced by about 10K lbs depending on temperature (the 1145pm departure should be helpful). A 737-8 burns about 10lbs per mile so the elevation factor is equivalent to about 1000 miles of range. However, Ethiopian only has 160 seats on their 737-8 compared to 170 for AR and 189 for GOL which is 2000 to 7500 lbs of passengers and luggage. A quick look at the numbers shows that what Ethiopian is doing with the 737-8 isn’t that different from AR or GOL.

You do know how high above sea level ADD is compared to EZE, PUJ, MCO and to an extent BSB are right?
