ANA expresses interest to Chennai

Thu Dec 27, 2018 4:52 am

Hi folks,

Came across this yesterday while playing catchup at the http://www.centreforaviation.com (CAPA).

10-Dec-2018 4:40 PM
Finnair, ANA and Alitalia express interest in operating services to Chennai

Airports Authority of India reported All Nippon Airways (ANA), Alitalia and Finnair expressed interest in launching new international services at Chennai International Airport (TNN, 06-Dec-2018). ANA reportedly expressed interest in commencing Tokyo-Chennai service, while Alitalia is considering Rome-Chennai service.

I managed to track down the original source at the link below:
https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chennai/intl-airlines-express-interest-to-fly-from-city/articleshow/66961110.cms

So, what do you all think of ANA wanting to enter the Chennai market?? I say it could happen relatively soon, but who knows. They already serve BOM and DEL.

Chennai still is the economic powerhouse of southern India, especially if you consider old economy. I guess auto industry and ancillaries will drive the business demand.

Southern India also has cloth factories which can be of interest for Europeans and I suppose for Japanese too... It definitively makes sense!

Not sure about any schedule but... could AY make it work for late dep from HEL for early morning arrival in India and return to HEL during early afternoon at same time as far East trip around 14:00?

Sounds like AAI met with NH, AZ and AY at World Routes and now AAI claims new service is imminent

They probably met at the World Routes but seemingly these airlines also have met AAI separately at Chennai International Airport probably meaning that these airlines truly are interested in launching flights to MAA.

A quote from Times of India (Dec 6, 2018):

A senior official of AAI said three airlines — All Nippon Airways (Japan), Alitalia (Italy) and Finnair (Finland) — had enquired about the possibility of starting flights to the respective countries from Chennai.

“Representatives from Finnair were at the airport and held discussions about starting the service recently while the other two airlines had approached some time ago,” said the official.

All Nippon wanted to start a direct flight to Tokyo while the Italian airlines wanted to start flights to Rome.

They could also be targeting traffic between North America and Southern India, where many IT professionals originate. Good news for MAA; hopefully they can improve their airport transfers between the city and the airport and within the terminals.

Great news! Chennai has always been grossly underserved for decades. Always ignored by Air India and its North Indian babus.

Only people upset will be Airliners India members who think BOM and DEL are the only two gateways to India.

Majority of the IT professionals in India originate in BLR , so ANA should be targeting BLR, which has more business traffic than MAA. They are looking at MAA because of its auto industry and other "old" industries which have connections with Japanese industries.

Personally they should look at BLR, and in the past some Japanese airline spokesperson did indicate that, but it has not come to fruition yet.

So ANA going for BLR too at same time would mean too much capacity from having no flights to two flights to Japan.

Cincinnati is a smart choice, especially as south India runs away in high tech development compared to the rest of the country.

One heck of a long route for a 787 then, eh? Puts a whole new meaning to "long and thin"....

Not many Indians in Cincinnati though :D

While BLR may have more IT professionals , I don't think even 25% of IT professionals in India originate from BLR. The IT industry is quite dominant in BLR, MAA, HYD, PNQ, BOM and DEL.

The old economy in Chennai is quite big, it is the largest Auto Hub in India, 2nd largest port in India and also has software to boot.

Since they're targeting India to North America, NH might as well add YYZ soon. No Japanese carrier flies there and TYO-YYZ is currently underserved for a star alliance hub city like Toronto which is not important for Eastern Canada pax but Eastern/South/Midwest USA pax too. I'm sure the indian population is huge in YYZ compared to CVG.
