More AA wide body orders?

Fri Dec 28, 2018 9:41 pm

Happy new year all! I was just looking over AA fleet and we all know that the new 787 that are coming 2023- will replace the 330s and the 767 but do you think AA will place another order for more WB to expand?

Given how committed American is to the 787, I expect they will consider the 787-10 one day. When the 777-200ERs hit the end of their life, it would be perfect for trunk routes like JFK-LHR. AA has a significant number of Transatlantic routes that are 6-9 hours long. It also likely would do well flying to Brazil. MIA-GRU/SCL are only about 3500nm so the giant cargo holds on the 787-10 could be put to good use while offering better CASM than 777-200s

The A330-200's are not being replaced for now. The A330-300's are due to be phased out.

Agreed, makes a lot of sense. The 777-200s were delivered largely between 1997 and 2002 and have been nicely renovated for the most part, but eventually will need to be replaced and the 787-10 is a logical replacement aircraft for a lot of what the 777-200 does in the AA fleet.

I agree the 787-10 would be the next practical order for AA. Slim chance maybe a few 321LR when the 757s retire but not sure if the neos already in order will replace The transatlantic routes.

I think there's a good chance that as will get a decent sized 797 fleet. Could be great for tatl thin routes from clt and phl

Maybe they will eventually, but not in the near future. American hasn't said anything, at this point, about the remaining LAA 757s retiring so those still have some time left in the fleet. The F Cabin was remade with new seats, old brown leather seats are now ancient history. Like the remaining 767s, I think that the LAA 757s will finish their life at American in PHL and MIA. The ex-US 757s based out of PHX will be gone before the LAA 757s will.

Got you. I wasn’t aware on the LAA 757s on there wear abouts on retirement. Does seem like AA is being conservative overall with fleet expansion which makes sense

I'm assuming you want to retire your 777-200ERs at around 25 years, which would suggest 2022 for the first delivery. You'd need to place orders for the 787-10 in 2020 for the, right? Or could the order date be farther out?

American has decided to keep the A333’s for now as well. That being said they will have to retire down the road. I can see the 797 filling a void with the 787. American will eventually reduce there fleet types as they have always done.

The oldest 777s are expected to be replaced with existing 787-9 orders. AAs 777-200s were delivered between 1999 and 2002. AA was still flying MD11s as the long haul flagship plane in the 90s.

Whenever the day comes to replace the 777-300ERs, they could either use the 777X or 787-10 as a replacement. If they really want commonality, we could see the entire AA widebody fleet consisting entirely of all 3 787 varieties, many years into the future.

787-10 is ideal for 772 replacement, but American has to afford the price of another type of plane to maintain, which is against their purpose of ordering Dreamliners.

Those would be oddballs in the fleet though whose mainline wide-body fleet can be centered around the 787 (and 5-class B77Ws). AA could find a buyer for those frames and use B788s to replace them out of PHL and CLT. B789s could then be distributed among the main hubs with B78Xs being 5-class frames to premium destinations like LHR. However, the debt situation could cause AA to hold onto those A332s for longer.

I'm confused by your statement. The 787-10 is a Dreamliner so the costs are largely already absorbed by the existing fleet. Any additional frames/variants just makes it even more efficient to fly/maintain.
