UPS Pax. Service?

Sat Mar 16, 2002 1:50 pm

While looking through the 727 pictures tonight I found a pictures of UPS 727's carrying passengers. This is the first I've heard of such an instance. What's the story behind UPS's pax. service?

I assume they are all charter flights (as said in the comments of picture 1).

UPS 727 were used for a couple of years to transport people during the day and convert to a freighter in the evening. Similar to what Lufthansa did with some of there 727 or what they are still doing today with the 737 QuickChange.
I am not sure when and why the UPS passenger service was discontinued.
At Frankfurt they still have weird looking extra wide trucks who can take the passenger seats for a quick conversion.
I hope the information helped.

I think UPS planned to discontinue pax flights, even before 11Sep. Not sure if they really did.

Well as far as I know, UPS still operates Charter flights from PIT on the weekends to Punta Cana and Aruba with the 727QF Combi/Freighter.

I saw UPS pax. 727-100s in SJU a few years ago. Not sure if they were scheduled or charter, but I think they went to Louisville or somewhere in that area.

UPS discontinued pax charters around last summer because it wasn't profitable enough. We are parking 15 727's to include all the (8) -200's. About 30 crews are being displaced off the 727 to be retrained on the other fleets. The rumor is that if business calls for it, the parked aircraft will be quickly brought back....but I doubt it. I believe the aircraft are parked at Kelly field near San Antonio.

De727ups, I read in Airliner World that UPS was making money on the passenger service, but in the long run, it wouldn't be much so they discontinued it while they were ahead.

They initially told us the aircraft were needed for freight more and then later they started parking them....who knows. There were rumors about for years that the pax stuff didn't make enough to justify itself. It was a publicity win....that's for sure, and UPS loves that kind of stuff. The whole idea of pax conversions and operations was a proof of concept test for UPS. I think they tested it and decided it wasn't worth it, so it's no more.

I'm on my way to YVR tonight to fly out Monday evening. The captain I'm flying with mentioned that he thought the plane we had....954UP....was an ex-pax bird. The rumor is they ripped the TCAS out of the pax planes as soon as they could to save money. Too bad, since it was nice to have. The plane I'm flying out on Monday doesn't have TCAS...that's for sure. Anyone happen to know the tail numbers of the ex-pax planes?

Are the A300's taking up the 727 routes? Will there be any furloughs or is there enough attrition? Hope no furloughs will result.TC

UPS' pass ops were profitable. The reason why they were pulled was that the margins were beginning to shrink. The 727-100's were competing against more economical aircraft such as the A320 or the 737, and 757 that other tour operators are using. UPS decided to discontinue service instead of losing money or purchasing aircraft to compete in this venture.

The aircraft are stored at Kelly AFB. They are maintained by Dee Howard and kept in perfect operating condition. This is so when the aircraft are needed they will be flyable in a moments notice and used for peak season.

UPS had TCAS on the pass aircraft and international aircraft that fly in countries were TCAS is a mandate. UPS wants to put ADS-B in their aircraft rather than TCAS.
