Would the Jordanian government ever allow Ryanair to open a base in Jordan? Maybe not Amman but rather Aqaba?
I don’t see why not. I would think that Ryanair has carefully crafted its plans and route network so it doesn’t clash with Royal Jordanian. In fact, all of Ryanair’s routes out of Jordan face no competition , and are mostly to Eastern Europe and other cities not served or likely to be served by RJ in the near future. So it entered the market with a clear mandate to stimulate inbound tourism to Jordan and that it has done (500,000 new passengers the first year alone!).
This makes me recall the bad experience of Air Arabia Jordan, which if my memory serves me well, complained before shutting down that it had its plans and momentum curtailed by the Jordanian authorities. I would think air Arabia’s business plan for Jordan was to compete on major routes (stimulate low fare traffic but to on existing routes )
I think on the long run Jordan and Lebanon have to learn to embrace competition for their national carriers and realize the end game is to stimulate traffic including tourism and not to protect their legacy carriers forever.
