Launching June 2020 with a 787 (doesn’t specify 788 or 789) 5 times per week year round!

Long overdue!! I predict Delta to jump ship and possibly move the frame to start PDX-CDG.

Flight is on a 788. Maybe if demand is strong enough it can be upgraded in the future. But the 788 has more economy seats v the 789. Also I like the late departure time from PDX. Will be able to get sleep...maybe.

My guess is BA had enough Portland and UK passengers filling enough seats on their SEA flights to justify the add. Now they won’t have to waste hours connecting. Delta will be fine at PDX but will now not go year round, which they likely were planning. It should help push down fares too.

PDX is the number one connecting city to the BA SEA service, which is why I have been so earnest in my insistence this was coming. Kudos to PDXPOL for bringing us the original speculation, then being reaffirmed a mere 5 days ago by Bobbaker19 with a cryptic blurb, oddly almost all of us chose to bite & follow with no substantiation at all, almost taboo on a.net. Then came that roller coaster of Tuesday, then I woke up to it already announced the next day.

Here is the press release from the Port of Portland regarding the new service - https://www.portofportland.com/Newsroom ... sh-Airways

Ooops. They screwed up the economy fare from the original British Airways release. Should be £459 not $487. Looks like they converted the others. And I’m guessing those are introductory fares and will go up.

Inaugural flight, returning the 17th of June for $632.39 all in, that is definitely a promo fare. We just paid $1750.00 p.p. to fly to Dublin two weeks later on Delta in W class.

Thank you everyone for the polite words. I too am very excited to see BA and the beautiful 787. If I recall both Austin and San Jose started with the 787-8. But all have been upgaged since.

So I have never flown BA, flown DL metal to Europe. I am planning a Rome trip next fall and decided to check the fare on BA web site. Do to the long flight I will only book premium economy. So price wise I thought it was ok, but then BA wanted me to pay for seat selections on each leg of each flight. I was surprised, especially paying for premium level. Is that something new to BA or have they always charged for seat assignments. It was a significant cost especially for the international legs.

Condor on the search engines came in the cheapest for premium economy, plus you get a seat assigned. But never flown them either or no anyone who has.

If i am not mistaken, BA also charges for J class seat assignment if you do not have higher status with them. BA service is not what it used to be.

Yeah, whatever, apologies to all, but those of us waiting on a date, (such as the sheep that I am), I’m not the only one.

DL isn’t going to go lightly into the night, hence the upgrade to the 764, which is only being offered on select routes with their 4 class options. They had to know this was forthcoming. BA just announced a seat reduction on SEA-LHR, and the new PDX flight had to play a part. DL has built up enough corporate contracts, and loyalty with their international service across both oceans, to survive. CDG isn’t happening, as AMS serves the same purpose. BA will be a breath of fresh air for AS loyalists, and will definitely succeed. Where BA may take over, is the year round service, if year round O&D is strong enough, and if connections are easier and better in the low season thru LHR than AMS, it could be a battle. But it seems DL was prepared for the fight ahead of this announcement. Will be enjoyable to watch, and help us consumers with keeping fares in check. Hopefully.

I've flown Condor from FRA to PDX. The service is pretty average, plus you have to pay for inflight entertainment. Food is bland but the cheap airfare makes up for it I guess.

ZipairTokyo has indicated that Portland is at the top of the list (with Bangkok, Seoul and Honolulu) for its 2020 launch but PDX probably won’t happen until 2021. The Japan Airlines LCC will provide connections to key cities across Asia from NRT making KE to slot-restricted Seoul unnecessary. Meanwhile, the new Toyoko Inn Portland is near final design approval and construction should start soon. The Japanese chain’s first hotel on the West Coast will be ~30 stories with 600 rooms. (Artist rendering showing the hotel’s shape and location.)

I too saw the renderings for that amazing new Toyoko Inn...gorgeous! While many try and refute how and why Portland isn't a viable route to and from Tokyo/Japan...I would cite the deep cultural and business ties that bring our two regions closer. Frankly the history in and of itself of a non-stop flight from PDX to Tokyo is significant in that it goes back decades to service with United and Northwest. Beyond that what really solidified for me the vast relationships were during the DOT review process for awarding the new US to Haneda slots. I read nearly every document that was submitted from this region from businesses, educational institutes, cultural groups, governments and government officials and the traveling public...there are more people and entities that rely on the PDX to Tokyo non-stop flights then I ever realized.

More on the BA flight. Routesonline posted the specifics:

“British Airways yesterday (18DEC19) opened reservation for its latest US service, with Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operating London Heathrow – Portland OR route. From 01JUN20 this route will be served 5 times weekly for summer, 4 weekly during winter season from 25OCT20. Service operates 4 weekly (Day x246) in winter season from 25OCT20.”

BA tailored this to handle the passengers they saw connecting through SEA. It’s geared toward Portland AS Mileage Plan members and UK BA passengers, not so much for people connecting in Portland. And BA probably acted now to prevent Delta from going year round. I think Delta’s April—October flight should do fine. I don’t see British Airways running Delta off the route.

My apologies, too...I was also one who was checking a-net most of the day on Tuesday, along with oregonlive, POP, etc. to see if the announcement was made.

Well stated comment. DL absolutely knew this day was coming, and probably expected it sooner. As I've stated on here a few times before, DL revenue management knows the business very well, and the PDX-London market (like with PDX-Tokyo) and they're not going to simply fold their tent now. What I saw in Seattle is that DL started SEA-LHR, developed it for a year or two, then transitioned it over to their partner VS, who now operates that route with a 787. Could we see a replay of this in PDX. with VS taking it year round? Absolutely...the PDX-London market is ideal for the 787, and to see BA vs VS in PDX would not surprise me at all. DL would then move the 764 over to ATL, MSP, etc.

It seems like the PDX-Europe market has matured enough now that people are wanting the non-stop rather than connecting in SEA and elsewhere first to save a few bucks. While Icelandair started all of this off after LH left town after 5 years, they had a golden opportunity to go year round with their service, but didn't, hence the new entrants. Condor is back next year as we know, but overall they are on life support and their long term future is unknown.

BA will do very well on this route, as will DL/VS. With connection opportunities in LHR (BA) and AMS (DL/KL), the PDX market will be well-served. I don't understand the fixation by some on the pipe dream of PDX-CDG, and with BA coming, it makes it less likely that LH will return.

Great to see BA moving on PDX. While I've thought that some of the PDX-Europe ideas flying (heh) around here were a little far-fetched, this one seemed like a strong possibility with the 788 and AS hub. Wouldn't be surprised to see it upgauged in the future. Congratulations to all involved!

AS PDX-SLC up to 5x daily? I would’ve thought allocating 2 of those e175s to starting 2x daily PDX-DEN might be more useful?

Also surprised to see WS PDX-YYC Going 2x daily.

Also excited to finally see PDX-LHR become a reality on BA. I’ve been waiting for this for many years and it should do well with connection opportunities on both sides. It’ll be interesting to see what DL does to their PDX-LHR flight- get ready for some deals for this coming summer.

Regarding SLC vs. DEN, I assume it comes down to this: SLC you only have to deal with DL. DEN you have to deal with UA, WN, and F9. But yeah, among many others I still don’t totally fathom why AS can’t at least throw a couple of E175’s on PDX-DEN to keep their frequent fliers happy. It’s one of, if not the most obvious hole in their PNW network.

Nice to see WS double up to Calgary, too. I wonder if DL is getting some NRT feed from those flights.

Shame to see Icelandair scaling back PDX. I don’t think they will pull PDX all together only because of Alaska, but I have been hoping for year round, even 2-4x weekly, but with BA, might be harder. Although I do believe FI targets a different demographic than BA does which is why I think they’ll stay around Portland.

I also don’t think the scale back can be blamed entirely on the market. It seems well known that Icelandair is having troubles of their own and trying to do what’s best for sustainability. With the MAX issue, that seems to have been a huge blow to FI so allocating 757s elsewhere had to be done and Portland seems to be a minor victim of that.

Agreed on Denver. I had to check and AS only serves it from Seattle, and there had been some discussion that they hardly serve the Denvers and Phoenixes and other places from SFO/LAX, but it's clear they're even scaling it back too. WN it is for that Timbers away trip.

The WS double daily, at least when I checked for July 6, is a 7am and a noon departure from Portland.

They go 5x/week starting 25 May through summer. As of now season ends 26 October.

...Now we need to start whittling down the unserved routes list. With the new Hyatt Regency open, if the city wants to succeed in attracting more conventions, they’ll need to improve the connectivity index at PDX. They could have trouble attracting national conventions if people east of the Mississippi have no choice but to connect in Denver, Dallas or Salt Lake City etc. Alaska dropping their PHL nonstop doesn’t help, albeit seasonal. It’s ironic we now have OneWorld to London but no nonstops to American’s PHL (year round) and MIA hubs.

You can put money on the Trail Blazers making a big push to get the NBA All Star Game here now. Portland is one of the only cities that has never hosted it, due almost entirely to the lack of an on-site convention hotel at the Rose Quarter. Also expect the city to bid on more NCAA events (e.g. the women’s Final Four) for the same reason.

Entirely agree. The issue that clearly prevented the NBA from awarding Portland the event in the past was specifically cited as the city having a fewer amount of lodging (rooms) to meet the minimum threshold that the NBA required. Another factor is also having a sizeable hotel that could serve as a "host facility" within a reasonable distance of the venue (likely both the Moda Center and Veteran's Memorial Coliseum would be utilized for the main event and ancillary activities). Those issues are clearly non-issues now as the 600 room Hyatt Regency has opened for business and a host of other smaller hotels have also opened since the city/Blazers last submitted their bid for the NBA All-Star game. Other properties on the horizon are the 600 room Toyoko Inn and the (presently) under construction 251 room Ritz Carlton.

I'm not certain how much the connectivity issue regarding a host cities airport has to do with whether the NBA awards a bid or not. Two cities that come to mind that have hosted significant sporting events with airports that have far less passenger volume and service than PDX are Indianapolis and New Orleans.

Never totally understood the ‘host facility’ deal. The Doubletree a few blocks away has 500 rooms, the Hyatt now has 600. The Toyoko won’t be done for a few years, along with the Ritz Carlton. Not sure they would utilize the Toyoko anyway. There are plenty of large hotels in the downtown core, and they are all within spitting distance of the Moda. The All-Star game is in the low season anyway for Portland hotels, so there shouldn’t be any issues securing plenty of rooms.

NBA has requirements for these types of events, and let’s just say a Doubletree doesn’t meet those requirements.

Once the Ritz opens look for visiting NBA teams to stay there; there’s a contractual requirement for visiting teams to stay in 5 star hotels when available. Currently Portland is one of a handful of cities in the NBA without a five star property; I want to say two of the others are Salt Lake and Oklahoma City. Right now visitors tend to shack up either in the Nines or the Monaco.

Not sure if this is true, Portland has more rooms than Indianapolis and likely Cleveland, both cities who have had an all-star game in the past and are slated to have one in the next couple years.

FWIW, here is what Chris McGowan said:
- The on-going excuse for many years was the lack of hotel options in the Portland area that would be able to support an event of this size. McGowan doesn't see that as an issue any more.

"Maybe at some point it was. But I don't see it as a stumbling block now," McGowan explained.

Issue wasn’t so much the number of rooms, it was the lack of a major headquarters hotel at the Rose Quarter. As the article (dated October 2019) and McGowan correctly points out, it shouldn’t be an issue anymore now that the Hyatt is open.

Happy to see the BA LHR=PDX flight announcement. I am glad it's year round. Let's see what DL does. I still hope that, if they make a move, they do some PDX=CDG.

Why would DL add CDG when they already have daily, year-round service to AMS? Why cannibalize AMS for a risky flight to CDG?

Maybe someone can show me the PDEW data between PDX-CDG to change my mind. But to me, this PDX-CDG fantasy is just that. Yet it keeps coming up on here.

Agreed. London was added because many of AMS passengers connected to LHR, that it was known they would capture the seasonal market. IF, CDG were added it would be likely an AF flight & I doubt daily nor year 'round. As you said it would certainly cannibalize loads & yields to AMS.

However, I just bought four tickets to Dublin on DL & by using the AMS flight, it was $500 per person higher than going via JFK or ATL. So we are going via JFK outbound & ATL on the return. I bet in the summer PDEW could justify a flight, but at what cost? Currently DL is charging a $500 premium to get on the n/s to Europe vs a US connection, a CDG connection would dilute that premium yield based upon demand?

Not sure about the NBA but for major national conventions connectivity will matter. Cities in the center of the US are shorter distances to everywhere in the 48 so it’s not as much of a factor. You can get to Iceland in the time it takes to get to MIA/FLL from Portland after the mandatory connection.
