I have always wondered why some people love to get angry at airlines trying new routes... Seems like the only airlines entitled to fly are the US3 and some of the european ones as long as it is not to destinations like say MEX, HAN, MVD, PUJ... I for one wish LO the best in HAN. Flew them once from WAW-WRO, and was pleased by their service. Hope they continue to do well.

A B787-8 reg SP-LRD is back in service after nearly a year of sitting on the ground.

That leaves two 787-8 still out of action:
SP-LRB since 04 Jun 19
SP-LRH since 28 Dec 18

The airline seems to take a while to replace those engines, are they still such an issue for other carriers?

BUD-ORD goes seasonal from end of october, resumes 6 May 2020. from spring then Budapest will have 3 long hauls by LOT.

Departure from BUD is at 11:25.

LO2001 BUD-ICN 11:25-06:05+1 -2--5-7
LO2002 ICN-BUD 07:35-12:20 1-3--6-

Looks like it will complement the flights from WAW which are 1-3456-
The schedule allows for roughly 2 hour transfers from WAW both ways.
But at this moment, I don't think any other transfers are possible.

LO just announced STR, BRU, BEG, PRG, OTP and SOF from summer 2020 all from Budapest. STR will be daily while all others will be 12 weekly.

So to sum up LOT's expansion at BUD:

Prague (2x daily) E195
Sofia (daily) E195
Belgrade (daily) E195
Stuttgart (daily) E195
Seoul (3 weekly) B788

Effective 30.03.2020

The frames that LOT is going to base at BUD will for sure be the more recently acquired second hand E195's and the older B787-8s, like SP-LRA the carriers first 787 that has been based at BUD since June this year.

CEO says LO plans to fly BUD-JFK daily beginning in S20.
He also says that in the future, they will open routes from BUD that are not served from WAW.

I am a bit surprised they are starting those new regional destinations from BUD with E195’s and not Q400’s.

For example PRG - LO will serve it from their hub in WAW with Q400’s and with E195’s from BUD.

If they feel constrained by lack of gates/slots in WAW they should upgauge the aircraft.

If they want to build a hub in BUD they should start will smaller aircraft to be able to build up frequencies.

They do the opposite - keep Q400 in WAW and send E195 to BUD. Doesn’t make much sense to me.

The Dash-8 have quite a reputation ín Hungary from the times Malév operated it. And not a positive one.

I am afraid Dashes don't have a stellar reputation anywhere.
Still, if not Q400's than E170's or get Regional Jet to operate ATR's

I just hope that if the whole "second hub in BUD" experiment fails it will not bring LO down.

If it is true, it should be any public decisions made by the government including amounts and conditions. I have never seen any confirmations of that.

CEO of LOT said in an interview with one of Polish aviation portals that next year they are planning 2 big orders:
- RJs - E2 or A220
- widebodies - either 787-9 and -10 or A350-900 and -1000

Great find thanks!! This order was supposed to have happened by end of this year so hopefully it will really be soon.

Few things. I remember few years ago the CEO say that they made a preliminary choice of the E2 and would not go for the CS now A220. I really hoped for the A220 it’s such a nice looking airplane and comfortable(although i haven’t been on it yet). I love the Ejets for that reason too but A220 is next level. Now with the Maxes groundings I wonder how much of a discount Boeing will give LOT to buy the Ejets now that it is part of Boeing. If it’s big discount then it will be E2. LOT doesn’t really have the money to throw around and most are leased.

For the widebody order can’t imagine LOT having two types. Again RR owes LOT money for the engine issues. So I wonder how much of a discount will they give for their engines which would push LOT to the 787-10. I know RR are on A350, but 1000 is too big and 10 is close to 900.

LOT is selling now cheap (called Economy-saver) tickets to KRK. I bought yesterday 4 round trip tickets ORD-KRK-ORD (non stop flight summer 2020) for $576 each which is the half of regular price I am usually paying. Looks like tickets selling fast beacuse I had to play with the return dates to keep lowest price ( I am flexible with that).
Looks like they realized that LH took a lot of Poles flying to/from US.

But isn't this generally the case with LH and western Poland? They seem to be quite strong in that region which makes sense since going through Warsaw would require backtracking.

More word on the street is that it will be at least the ones now flying for high season with just some LOT stickers, the ex-Saratov one and the ex-Azul. Will move the RJ once not needed for high season or to cover for the MAX grounding. Just rumor though. Talks of two based in Tallinn and two elsewhere initially (I would guess based in WAW, but possibly VNO?).

I've flown on the airBaltic ones... Can't say it is all that comfortable for pax. Seat is wide enough but the backrest is quite uncomfortable. It felt pretty hard basically, practically no cushioning and what little lumbar support there was seemed to be in the wrong place. I checked with my travel partner and she felt the same way. Personally, I'm quite a bit more comfy in the Embraers.

But previously direct flights to KRK (when they recovered after few years absence) were more expensive than via WAW (I am livivng 5 min from ORD and 20 min from KRK in PL). Previous years I used to fly on LH via MUC or FRA which gives me some savings (flying with family of 4 inlcuding me). Years ago when AB was existing I saved over $500 on tickets comparing to LO (in that years there was no direct flight ORD-KRK). I was flying few times on german airlines and there was a lot of Poles so I think due to most expensive ticket fares they chose LH (or AB). This move might bring back a lot of passengers back to LO. Last time I was flying on LO to Poland was back in 2006...

That’s a really good deal! I’m looking for my mom this fall ORD-KRK and they are around $600. It’s not just LH, KLM has been adding flights left and right to Poland. LOT used to give a lot of traffic to LH, now it needs to fight to get it back.

I think that this sale has a limited timeframe and it has a dates that this price is locked for (trip has to be completed between April and August 2020). So as for me it is perfect timing once kids ending school at begining of June and we have a family wedding sometime by the end of June so this is good deal to have vacation in PL next year.

Any LOT experts have thoughts on if they will start WAW-IAD? They're the only European Star Alliance airline that flies transatlantic and doesn't serve IAD.

I ask for selfish reasons -- need to go to Poland next summer but maybe I'm being too hopeful that they will expand by that time, and if it will be to IAD.

It does seem likely with the continuing route expansion. I'd say it'll be announced by next year

I think at this point, two new routes to the US make sense for LOT - SFO and IAD. And I'd think SFO would get priority if not for being so slot constrained. But given that they only expect one more 787 join fleet next year, my bet would be on the Asian market being preferred over IAD in 2020. Maybe 2021 though? I'd also love to see IAD served by LOT sooner than later!

LO has put BUD-BEG on sale so I suppose the same applies for other destinations they announced. They also moved Belgrade to the afternoon wave which makes more sense anyway.

Will be interesting to see what happens on BUD-ORD. AA is obviously the must stronger player here. Could we see LO drop ORD in favor of another destination like they did with winter flights when they introduced ICN?

AA must know that Star and Sky are making good money in Poland. Oneworld is very weak in the region making me wonder if AA will be starting the fight against LO ending the monopoly on the Eastern European market enabling other carriers to expand into the market (mainly long haul but also short haul).

I actually wonder if the romance between the Hungarian government and Wizz Air is over. There was that ruling by the consumer agency of Hungary, the government launched an investigation into their check-in procedures, then there is talk of moving LCCs to Kecskemet and on top of that Wizz Air has been attacking LO by calling them a loss-making business that will go out of business in a few years. My guess is that BUD isn't too happy with all the LCCs flying there as it took them 10 years and 15 million passengers to record a profit. I wonder if there is more to this than what we are seeing.

When I heard annoucment at the morning I thought the same... Hopefully they will not drop KRK towards other destinations because of AA...
Previous lack of direct conection between ORD and KRK were personal games between some persons.

Previous lack of direct conection between ORD and KRK were personal games between some persons.

I think ORD-KRK will be fine as the market is pretty large. I think LO has far more reasons to worry about BUD-ORD, that's where they might face a lot of problems.

We are developing our domestic network. Starting this winter season, there will be additional flights available between Warsaw and Poznań, Lublin, Rzeszów.

The Lublin one is interesting as it’s not a long distance, but they clearly want people to use LOT from LUZ on more European flights.

Lublin gets a 2345 inbound (LO3969) that leaves at 0600 the next day (LO3970). Not sure on days but I assume there’s been a discount for leaving an aircraft overnight as they’ve been storing most of the MAX fleet there.
