So in what order do you assume Delta will retire it's oldest jets? The list below is all jets that are older than anything in the American fleet. Do you think the B767s or the A320s will be last?

Frankly I always assumed the A320s would be retired after the MD-88s mostly because they would be the easiest to sell

I admit having somewhat of a bias for PMNW/DL A320s. Among other things, I have fond memories of riding on new NW A320 during my college years. Still, my amateurish hunch is that Delta's older surviving A320s/319s will outlive even the older 767s. Both the A320"ceo" series and the CFM engines that power DL's older A320s may remain in production a little longer which could help Delta better maintain their more elderly A320s.

Until relatively recently, I also thought DL would have been tempted to sell at least some of their A319s and newer A320s (AA, G4 and UA have snapped up many used A319s as of late). Of course, all surviving DL A320s and A319s now have the new cabins so these birds appear to be staying a while.

While it may be years before the oldest DL 757s (also now with new interiors) are finally gone, IIRC the PW engines for DL's 757s are no longer in production. I wonder if this could make 757 maintenance a little more expensive thus hasten 757 phaseout at least somewhat...if not near to the extent that the scarcity of JT8D-200 parts are spurring MD-80 phaseouts around the world.

Can an empty 321 not make it across the Atlantic to Kansas City non-stop? Or at least a one stop? Seems strange it stops twice.

It should be ferrying to BHM soon to wait for a check. Currently being used as a spare.

Re: Delta Aircraft Refurbishment Thread - 2019

A question for some of our posters who are in the know at Delta. Are there MD-90 motors being shipped to New Zealand for overhaul with the plan being that some of the -90s will be reactivated as the -88s phase out in 2020? Given how many new airplanes Delta is taking, I am somewhat skeptical that these airplanes are ever going back into service. I know those plans are probably still in flux. But engine overhauls would be a sign that they are actually making plans for reactivation.

What are the registrations of the 738s getting new interiors? I was little confused with the fleet number

I'm hardly a DL insider; I didn't know that MD-90s were once again in temporary storage. But it turns out there are at least two recently flown MD-90s now being stored at the moment (9229 and 9208) that are scheduled to return to service, along with a few MD-88s. Thanks n515cr for your updates!

Until perhaps early this year, there were contingency plans to RTS some MD-90s in "temporary" storage at that time. But then DL decided to permanently retire all those stored 90s; 9229 and 9208 were apparently not part of the earlier batch of stored MD-90s.

I wonder if there are enough V2500s from retired MD-90s that there's little or no more need for any of these exorbitantly costly engine overhauls in New Zealand. Others on separate threads have said DL is no longer overhauling the MD-88's JT8D-200s.

So, it looks like the first official refurbished 767-400 flight is scheduled for November 20 on Delta Flight #30 ATL-LHR, a somewhat lengthy delay from the initially scheduled date of November 12. Any reason for the delay? Also, when will N828MH have it’s IFE working? Will it be ready by 11/20? On a final note, N831MH, N834MH, N833MH, and N835MH are all still at CAN. Any idea when they will be finished, and when they will ferry back to the US?

Seems extra long....did it also have a heavy maintenance visit?

One important change I have noticed with the ongoing fleet upgrades is that with 27 A220s in the fleet (the 28th bird comes next week), the 717 has left the west coast. I haven't checked absolutely everything, but there are no 717s on what had been likely places for the 717 to pop up. SEA-DEN and SEA-SFO are now a mix of A319 and A221. SEA-LAS is a mix of 738, A319, and A320. LAX-SFO is mostly 738 and 739 (upgauged and with fewer frequencies due to LAX construction).

It is interesting to see the fleet move around, with 717s going back east to join other narrowbodies as replacements for -88s and -90s that are coming off ATL hub operations and headed to the desert. It also seems that there has been an uptick in A319 flying out west, with some aircraft doing multiple turns out of LAX and SEA before rotating back east. My guess is that some of that flying will go A220 as more aircraft join the fleet.

Interesting observation. What are the 717 bases at present? Should we expect 717s to be clustered at ATL the way MD-88/MD-90 have been? 717s certainly have useful range out of DTW/MSP/LGA, too.

717 pilot bases are now ATL, DTW, and NYC with MSP scheduled to open in the next few months. December is the final month for LAX 717 pilots.

The 717 fleet has been consolidated to the east coast with the 220 taking on many of the SEA and SLC duties, and the 319/320 taking most of the LAX flying.
