It could be that Boeing needs to inform the supplier a certain time in advance to cut production. If I remember right they have to give Spirit for example a one years warning in advance for production reductions Everything and contracts were geared for ramping up..

I assume it's easier to store aircraft parts than the complete product. Just rent an empty warehouse somewhere or put up a tent in the parking lot. And when the ramp up does come, it's easier to have most parts already in stock. For all we know, this is just a short term delay of the planned ramp up and a temporary rate reduction, not a permanent change in strategy.

Both SpiritAero and CFM announced they don’t intend on reducing production, but will store fuselages at Wichita and CFM will still ship the engines,

There are 22 MAX airframes stored at Everett. I was up there today and saw several at the Dreamlifter operations center, along the old runway 11/29 and behind the Everett delivery center.

Passing by BFI today and man the storage lot west of E Marginal Way is full of MAXs.
Seeing all those Chinese frames I wonder why Boeing didn't ferry them all to HSN, afterall isn't that suppose to be the completion center for all Chinese deliveries? Might as well use this opportunity to get the long ferry flights done.

HSN is Zhoushan Putuoshan Airport the location of Boeing's Chinese completion center. I understand MAX nonrev flights can be exempted in the US but I'm sure some ferry flights will be allowed in China, sooner or later that'll happen anyway since it sounds like CAAC will do their own certification of the fix, which has to involve test flights.

With engines negotiated separately from airframes, what happens to those, presumably the engine maker wants paying on the contract date, will the airframe/engine contracts normally have clauses enabling compensation if one can't deliver on scheduled date to make up for the loss? i.e. Boeing on the hook for financing a load of engines that need paying for but can't be used? Or will it just be something that the customer (or unlikely the engine supplier) has to suck up?

Think it's safe to say those Max's destined for Jet Airways will never be delivered to 9W.
Might as well store those in VCV

You would expect there to be more in storage than that if they are still building at rate 52, presumably many are stored at Renton.

The trend was, increasingly for engines to be negotiated separately to the air frame. Boeing was the first to resist this, other than with their largest customers. Offering different engines on the same air frame encourages customers to do their own thing, so less of an issue with the MAX.

That trend has reversed, as a result of resistance by B & A, and after issues with RR engines on the 787, and PW on the A32NEO.

So back to your question. For those customers who have negotiated a separate engine deal, a milestone payment will be due when the engine is shipped to Boeing, another when it is hung on your plane, another on delivery, and final withheld payment 3-12 months later.

Just as for Boeing engine purchases, if we are to believe reports attributed to CFM, they are taking a softly softly approach to customers, so probably extending payment due dates. Naturally they can't invoice for the last two milestones, as there is no delivery of a finished aircraft.

So the grounding will be creating cash flow issues for Boeing, CFM and other suppliers. In turn, Boeing has strategic shareholdings in suppliers, so further impact (the downside to vertical integration).

Some smaller, or less liquid airlines and financiers will be under pressure, as NB aircraft attract many more customers and participants than WB.

So, quick question, and I thought here would be the best place to ask it, so please forgive me if I'm wrong...

With the 737-max grounded, and Boeing still rather obligated to keep producing them, is it possible for Boeing to shift the production schedule to produce max 7s and bring forward those schedule slots? My thinking on this is that I believe that I read that the max 7 and Max 10 (once certified) don't have the offending MCAS trim system and might be able to be allowed to fly before the MCAS issues are sorted. Would customers even want those frames early? Would this benefit Boeing at all? Or, is it just smarter to keep building and storing frames to be able to keep the scheduled build sequence?

Have they stored any Max's at Moses Lake yet?

Looks like they're quickly running out of room at RNT and BFI.

Of course , the planes destined for Jet Airways are now white tails,
so figure those might be off to VCV before too much longer.

That just is the number stored, either frames ready for delivery, to be completed in China or frames NTU. Frames that are still on the flightline undergoing pre flight checks/testing are not included in the 57 in storage

Given that VA wont take delivery until November I would say around September

Unfortunately after news today VA will now take their first 737MAX in July 2021, 15 737MAX8 now converted to 737MAX10, so 737MAX10 will be delivered first, 737MAX8 pushed back to 2025

I wonder what the ramp up in deliveries is going to look like once they are un-grounded. I imagine there are finite resources available to accomplish this!

It would make sense to use external contractors then for painting etc if they don’t have the internal resources across the business. They would still have their normal production schedule to keep up with.

As they continue to build-test fly units coming off the line, is there enough room to keep them at Paine field or are they ferried to a
storage facility ?

The planes they are building now although not being delivered are still being painted as previously scheduled for the most part, even the Jet Airways "white tails". The issue will be finding enough people qualified to work on the extra planes and handle the paperwork -- I see lots and lots of overtime coming. The pilots aren't exactly overworked now so flying an extra flight or two a week won't be an issue.

Since many of the 737 customers don't require a "customer flight" many of these airplanes will only require one more flight before delivery.

It will be real interesting to see how quickly the inventory disappears.

Usually the first copy takes longer due to the learning curve and process verification etc. Plus any FTI that may have to be fitted prior to assembly.

How long does the average fuse take from arrival to roll out?

Alaska's first 737-9, N913AK is likely to roll out next week if they keep to sequence. :)
