Anybody know the story on the LN:688 - the undelivered Air China bird that was rolled out March 19, 2018?

Boeing delivered 16 787's in June making 75 delivered for the first half of 2019.

June saw Turkish Airlines take delivery of their first 789, while KLM and Eva Air both took delivery of their first 787-10. June also saw the first 787-10 roll out of final assembly for both Vietnam Airlines and Saudi Arabian

Towards the end of this month, maybe the beginning of August the first 789 for Qatar will enter final assembly

Seems I jumped the gun as both 787's that were delivered yesterday ANA's 2nd 787-10 JA901A and Uzbekistan Airways 788 UK-78705 were contractually delivered in June so that makes it 18 787's delivered in June which is the highest this year. In total 77 787's have been delivered so far this year

Seems like you jumped the gun twice. Actual deliveries came in today. Uzbekistan is a July delivery but the two stored Hainan frames got "creatively" delivered in June making it 19 for the month. Every bit helps when the MAX is grounded...

From Leeham, suggests the 14 per month rate may prove over-optimistic soon:

"There are clear signs of challenges, both near- and medium-term for the 787.

Summary
Weak customers threaten to create deferred deliveries near-term.
There will be about 20 A330s and 777s coming off lease each year from 2021-2026 on top of retirements. Airbus and Boeing see these are replacement opportunities.
The production back delivery stream falls off the cliff in 2022."

Leeham (Scott Hamilton!) often is somewhat over-pessimistic when the subject is Boeing ;) Last year, Boeing faced the same challenge regarding 2021 deliveries. Worse, they even had some 2020 production slots to fill IIRC.

You can also see it from the positive side: Boeing has nearly 80 787 production slots in 2022 up for grabs, availability is no problem!

Seriously, Boeing needs to sell these empty production slots before the end of next year, if not a reduction is inevitable. But I'm not so pessimistic.

Genuinely curious about A350 production, does it show the same picture? Perhaps something to discuss in a separate thread, don't want to create another A vs B slamfest. :shakehead:

I wonder if Delta would use this opportunity to get some 787 cheap and start replacing some of their 767 flying, while waiting for the 797?

Boeing increased 787 production to sell and enable airlines to excercise options. Options for the 2nd half of 2022 should still be open to exercise and airlines excercise options as late as possible to minimize risk. It is possible some options are only 30 month options.

Boeing must sell 18 months in advance, so I won't worry.

I am curious, how many near term slots does the A350 have open? By near term, 2021 through 2023.

I don't know... I don't think DL would be tempted by the per-seat costs of a 787-8, and the 787-9 in size falls right on top of the 339 and 359 already in the fleet. They don't need 787-9 range, either. Now, if they wanted to use -9s to replace some 777 flying, and move the 777s (not 77Ls) to TATL/deep S America, that might be interesting.

I still believe AA will eventually replace their 47 strong 77E fleet with a combination
of 789's and 78J's , though that order may not come until 2025 or so.

I also am not overly worried at the moment. Scott Hamilton previously suggested how the 3.5 per month delivery rate for the 777 was unsustainable shortly after Boeing announced it, yet Boeing subsequently had a decent run of 777 Freighter and 777-300ER orders that covered the "slot gaps" he had (correctly) identified at the time.

I'm betting Boeing makes a " too good to refuse " offer to EK and LH for a few more 777F's to compensate
for their soon to be late 779 deliveries.

:shakehead:

Going to 14/mo allowed Boeing to price the 787 to win the AA and HA orders among others. The AA order was used to rejuvenate the 788. I'm sure Boeing is happy about how 14/mo worked out even though the backlog may diminish some years down the road. They have over 500 left to build right now.

Avolon will also be a new customer for this year, but as a leasing company they won't be a new operator of course.

The next new operator after Hong Kong Airlines will be Vistara, but that will already be 2020.

Avolon aren't a new customer. They've had loads since 2017.

The Hong Kong might not be happening btw. Things are going on behind the scenes with the outstanding Hainan Airlines Holding group orders but the situation is currently unclear.

The Civil Aviation Department here still have no knowledge of a 787 coming to the HK register - normally a long process of paperwork and certification. A contact in HKA says they are definitely not coming. Having said that, this is the airline industry where things change daily and stranger things have happened....

This will be the 1st delivery from their own direct order, earlier ones were sale and leaseback deliveries. Those are listed by Boeing as deliveries to the airline, not to the leasing company.

You are 100% wrong. If you are using Boeing's monthly delivery reports as the basis for your argument then you should stop as Boeing haven't shown any consistency in how they index the true customer for as long as I can remember. Suffice to say that none of 8 frames delivered to Avolon thus far have been sale and lease backs, they are Avolon's own orders.
