Atlanta Aviation Thread - 2019

Tue Jan 01, 2019 11:20 pm

I thought I might as well create this years thread since it hasn't been done yet. Here is what we are expecting so far this year:

1. WestJet adding YYC-ATL route.
2. Air France bringing over the A380-800.
3. Virgin Atlantic keeping the 747-400 on the MAN-ATL route for the remainder of the year.
4. Virgin Atlantic switching over to the A330-300 on the LHR-ATL route permanently for the remainder of this year, replacing the A340-600.

Happy 2019 everyone! Let's hope for the best and safe travels where ever you are in the world!

A few more things to expect for this year per KATL Wikipedia page (Yes I know...):

1. Southwest ending ATL-DTW and ATL-MSP services on June 7th, 2019.
2. Delta beginning ATL-BUR service on July 8th, 2019. Delta is also beginning ATL-ONT on April 22nd, 2019.

Maybe this will be the year they actually open concessions in the C-concourse food court. Not holding my breath, though ~

Will WS be able to sustain the YYC-ATL route when DL wasn't able to make it more then a few times weekly and seasonal?

I highly doubt it. C concourse has plenty of concessions throughout the concourse with two Starbucks on both ends.

A food court was added several years ago but it’s still a big empty space by the escalators. Apparently, everything is on hold pending lawsuits. C is the only Concourse (except for T) without an operating food court.

ATL in 2019 is like most American airports in the late 90s. MD-80s, 767s, and 757s everywhere.

It also appears O’hare and Hartsfield-Jackson will co- share the busiest airport in the world title. O’hare had more plane traffic and Hartsfield-Jackson had more passengers in 2018.

I'm seeing that Qatar has reverted back to their 777-300ER. Any reasons? Will the A350-900XWB come back?

Two Concourse questions.

1. Does ATL still plan on widening the D concourse to increase holdroom space?

2. Are there still plans to convert E to purely domestic use and build G as an Extension to F?

Will WN ever add any new nonstop routes out of ATL such as ATL-ABQ, ATL-PDX, ATL-SMF, ATL-SLC, or ATL-SJC?

That’s surprising. You’d think they’d want to consolidate all international flights in F/G so E can create more space for domestic flights so they don’t have to extend T

Looks like we’ll be getting some good stuff for the Super Bowl. United with their 777s and 757-300s, and I see JetBlue is running some A321s from Boston. I wish those A321s would be permanent. Those things are the best.

I’m pretty sure that UA 777’s and 757’s will park on E concourse as Delta can run some of their Intl. narrow body aircrafts on A and T concourse.

I doubt it. I think the only WN service changes we will see are routes taken away rather than gained.

Yeah they will use E. They have used E previously for charters in the past. AA is adding an additional LAX flight and switching over some of the other flights to 321T. As well as a couple from JFK. So I'm sure their gates on T and D will be pretty busy.

Have a couple of new updates for new flights from ATL (Per Wiki Atlanta Airport page with links attached):

1. Frontier will add their ATL-PHL route starting on 4/30/2019.

2. Spirit will add on a new route as well as a new seasonal route. Spirit will add their ATL-AUS route on 5/23/2019. While their seasonal route ATL-ACY will commence on 5/2/2019.

3. Turkish Airlines will commence their ATL-ISL route on 3/3/2019. While ending the ATL-IST route on 3/2/2019.

Any idea as to why ATL removed the smooth jazz playing throughout the terminal and replaced it with strange orchestra music?

That I have no idea. But I always love going through the concourses listening to relaxing jazz music. Marta also did the same thing a few years back where they stopped playing smooth Jazz at the train stations.

Great news for any Virgin Atlantic fans! They have extended the A340 service from the ATL-LHR route until April 30. There was a thread recently mentioning the retirement of the VS A340 will take place around later this year, not sure if it was confirmed but its starting to look like it.

Really surprised they cut MSP and DTW. I know these are DL strongholds with practically hourly flights but dang they couldn't even maintain token service? Shockingly DL is staying reasonable on ATL-MSP - just booked an ATL-MSP today for 7/4-7/7 and really I didn't pay that much more than when I went up there Memorial Day weekend last year when Southwest still had non-stop service.

NK also already serves MSP and DTW nonstop from ATL in addition to DL and WN. WN will still offer 1-stop connecting service to MSP and DTW from ATL after discontinuing ATL-MSP and ATL-DTW nonstop service.

I would expect DL to still be charging reasonable fares on ATL-MSP nonstop service with NK still serving MSP nonstop from ATL and with there being connecting options to MSP from ATL on WN, AA, and UA.

There are a few more nonstop routes that could be added by WN out of ATL such as ATL-PDX, ATL-SMF, and ATL-SJC. PDX, SMF, and SJC are three of the top non-DL hub destinations traveled to from ATL that WN doesn't currently serve nonstop from ATL.

Will WN ever add ATL-PDX, ATL-SMF, and/or ATL-SJC nonstop service?

Oh that’s very exciting. Ive been waiting for ATL to get another long haul international carrier. Hope they can make this route work, even if its just seasonal or a few times a week. Either way I’m excited.

Yep, I believe so. For the scheduling however I'm gonna have to dummy book to see how long they will service the A380 here.

With United focusing on LAX, does anyone think they would restart LAX-ATL? One has to admit Atlanta is a hole in their network from LA. I'm sure some of the of the Hollywood studio contracts they hold wouldn't mind a nonstop. IJS. It was flown in the early 2000's.

Wow, looks like there was an incident involving an Air France 777-300ER today an hour ago. One of the engines have went out and they did a complete 360 back to the airport and landed. I'm glad everyone is ok. Here is a FlightAware link on this particular aircraft.

LOL...maybe focusing was the wrong word. I know United flew ATLLAX in the early 2000s. Wad wondering if they would make a return. But the route is pretty full with DL, AA, Frontier and Spirit.
