That would be a good vantage point. Hopefully it wouldn't be abused like the Thistle Hotel at Heathrow. It has a nice spectators terrace but they asked that refreshments be bought from the hotel, which seems reasonable. Predictably some took matters into their own hands and brought their own food and drinks to the terrace. The result - terrace closed to all except hotel patrons.

As a long time user of Edinburgh Airport I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand we all want more flights and I want to see my local airport prosper. On the other hand the place is shambolic enough at the moment without even more flights and passengers. Many of the problems at EDI are due to issues for which the airport itself isn't responsible, particularly the shockingly awful performance of some handling companies, but it is unquestionably operating beyond its capacity. Basic stuff like the shortage of seating airside, the woeful passport control area and occasional issues of gate availability need to be sorted sooner rather than later. I've had enough bad experiences at EDI to consider using GLA if there is a suitable alternative flight despite it taking me twice as long to get there from my home.

I have just noticed that HU have actually reduced their PEK-EDI/DUB-PEK flights to only twice a week now. Full schedule as follow:

HU749 Tue PEK-EDI-DUB
HU750 Tue DUB-PEK
HU751 Sun PEK-DUB-EDI
HU752 Sun EDI-PEK

All flights now operated by B787. But is this a sign of poor performance of this triangular route? You can get a very cheap flight at less than GBP400 return from EDI to PEK even if you book a last minute flight to travel in next few weeks.

Hearing that Cathay Pacific may be starting soon. 3x weekly on A359.

What are your thoughts?

That would be amazing for the airport but may throw off Hainan.

Im guessing the travelling public outwith the block booking inbound tourists would prefer CX over HA. And with current loads no great loss.

Cathay are dropping the likes of DUS as they don’t fit the business friendly profile they need, not sure a thrice-weekly in such an immature market quite fits the build. I would imagine EDI as a toe in the water would make more sense as MAN tag on if anything.
But perhaps they have data that suggests otherwise....

If it were to be a tag-on then I'd imagine that MAN would be going 10 weekly as the existing daily route saw 85% loads on the A350-1000 in December (we are taking over 100% loads on A359s).

CX is doing perfectly well at 4 weekly in DUB, no reason to doubt that EDI at 3 weekly would do reasonably well too.

If it were to start I believe Cathay would do really well on the A350-900, not to many seats and at 3-4x weekly plenty of demand will be there.

Plenty of new demand or just pulling off other routes eg Finnair, QR, EK and BA?
Do we have a formal source for this "rumour"?

Also on the subject of new routes, has anyone got any rumours of potential new routes, or perhaps have access to the slot application website to see who has applied for slots.

Everyone has the ability to access the slot application website just do it yourself.

I do hate the word RUMOUR it means nothing until an official statement!

There was a certain poster on this thread not so long ago who was insisting that he had heard a ''true rumour'' yes that's what he wrote and that Westjet were definitely flying into Edinburgh for summer 2019, it hasn't materialised and it just goes to show that made up rumours mean nothing.

When I was a teenage planespotter many years ago the amount of unfounded RUMOURS doing the rounds was unbelievable that's one of the reasons I gave up plane spotting as I found it all very childish :-)

Regarding your previous comment,

I don't think that Lauda flying from VIE to EDI just a few times a week will encourage EasyJet to expand more at EDI, if they did so I wouldn't put it down to Lauda.

Heard murmurings of Icelandair 4x weekly next year, ORD going year round and possibly a very limited frequency by SQ with a drop in Prague.

Although I highly dislike rumours along with unfounded murmurings but in the case of Chicago, I would have thought that Washington had a better chance of going year round than Chicago.

Singapore Airlines at Edinburgh.....limited frequency via Prague.....really.....do have any source to back this up?

Westjet fell through at the last minute I heard, thay was why it was a rumour, although I would say Icelandair would have a good shout if true.

Their current MAX problems may put a stop to that. Who knows how long it will take to get those back in the air.

I don't know where you ''heard'' it from but Westjet didn't fall through at the last minute because it wasn't happening in the first place, it was just some teenage planespotters wet dream making it up as an unfounded rumour, nothing more nothing less!

The suggestion of Icelandair on the other hand might have some truth to it rather than just a ''silly rumour'' but with them operating to Glasgow which they have done for decades and with less transatlantic competition than Edinburgh we're have to wait and see if ''your rumour'' has any substance behind it!

Icelandair ''rumours'' for service starting in summer 2020 does sound a bit far fetched considering that it's still only March 2019, the airline is not known for making route decisions that far out.

Maybe the Icelandair ''rumour'' comes from the same wet dreaming teenage planespotter who predicted Westjet :-)

If that's the case I suggest that you query this individual rather than taking the ''rumours'' at face value!

We heard this about EK to DXB too when that was suggested but look what happened there. Westjet and EDI were definitely in talks but to what extent those got to, I cant confirm.

If United want to make Chicago year round, they may need to consider an equipment change. The winds across the atlantic are a lot stronger over the winter, which will cause a bit of a problem for the 757, as it is already at max fuel for the return flight to Chicago. If they stick with the 757, they may end up diverting for fuel fairly frequently in the winter months.

If United had to put a larger aircraft such as the B767, I would guess they would reduce the frequency during the Winter.

Read on another forum not heard from someone on another forum, big difference.

So not really passing on from what you heard, your passing on from something that you read :-)

Regarding Westjet I too read the comments that your referring to but the poster on that thread gave no substance to the subject ''or rumour'', he wrote that he had ''heard a rumour'' and that it was from a check in agent at the airport, not always the first point of contact to reveal any news when it comes to revealing new airlines!

He then went on to write that because it came from a check in agent it was a ''true rumour'', he then got ridiculed by others regarding the use of ''true rumour''.

I've Read that FR are reducing the stansted route from 4X Daily to 4 weekly flights. Surprised as I thought they may have been making a profit on the routes. Their reason is due to the max grounding however it could be that its just not a profitable route plus the extra competition from Easyjet to Stansted, and then the other airlines to other London spots and then there is also the trains too.

It's very low yielding. Often passengers will pay the basic fare (as low as £15) and no extras like seats, baggage, etc.
