What can one say, it is Denver International and the City of Denver again failing the pax and the airlines because of lack of oversight of contractors etc......The shoddy original concrete work was apparently done on the then Mayor Pena's watch. I cannot remember who the general contractor was, but it was one of the bigger names at the time (early 1990s). There was the billion dollar bust on the baggage handling system that was built, but was functionally unusable. You bet the traveling pax paid for that screw up.

Now we have reported a million dollar esoteric colored light sign at the entrance to Denver International that has gone on the fritz, just months after being installed. The article reports there are going to be significantly more costs to the traveling public because of the latest discovery related to the concrete. Perhaps, one could say well at least they caught it early before completing everything, and then have it collapse.

But wait, one of the so called travel industry watchers has just determined that DIA (Denver International Airport) is the best in class airport. Perhaps the current airport director can freeze salaries and reduce the airports marketing budget to help with some of the cost overruns that are being projected.

Here is the current state of the basement beneath Concourses A and B. It's pretty disgusting and in amazing disrepair.

Edelweiss will re-start seasonal DEN flights this month with the A340-300 instead of the A333 per CAPA. I'm not sure why they've switched the aircraft but it will be nice to see the A343 again.

Nice! Looks like it will be 2020 that we see the A340, but it's great to see it coming back next year as well with a capacity increase none the less! Clearly Denver is working for Edelweiss!

Indeed! When was the last time we've seen an A343 touch down at DEN? Fun fact is that WK's A333s actually seat one more passenger than their A343s.

Indeed! When was the last time we've seen an A343 touch down at DEN? Fun fact is that WK's A333s actually seat one more passenger than their A343s.


On a regular basis? Probably when LH first tried DEN-MUC in 2007. MUC was with the A343 while FRA got the A346.

In the more recent run of DEN-MUC, it’s been either a 333, 346, or 359. FRA has pretty consistently been on the 744 in the last ~8 or so years.

Huge win for the Airport. It's been a open secret that both UA and WN are planning extremely aggressive expansions at the Airport, with Denver slated toeasily be southwest's largest city.

That's a 66% increase in their footprint at Denver. Some of their gates are definitely crammed together, so I don't think it's a increase of 66% in their flights.

I'm kind of surprised that neither UA nor F9 were interested in selling off their hangers. Rumor has been for a while that they were not completely happy with the arrangements around the hangers.

I assume you mean UA NOT selling their hangar.

I was obviously wrong, but I thought F9 had been trying to sell that hangar. Other than the occasional Airbus parked outside, it does not appear that it is used. Guess I'm just there at the wrong time.

Anyone have any idea where this new Southwest hangar is going to be built? I didn't see a location in the article. With Concourses A, B, and C just about built out, I'm sure they wouldn't want to put it where it would interfere with a future Concourse D. Maybe alongside the current UA facility?

It will be north of the F9 hangar by 1000' or so.

Sounds like WN will increase it's gates to 37 and have around 48 RON aircraft.
Once the 16 other gates are opened almost every WN cities will have a Daily or weekend only DEN nonstop with the exception of probably LIH,ITO,PLS and NAS.

While I agree that WN is likely to add some new domestic nonstop routes out of DEN such as DEN-BHM, DEN-CLT, DEN-DSM, and DEN-ICT, there are some domestic destinations such as CRP, GSP, HRL, ITO, HNL, ISP, OGG, KOA, LIH, MHT, RIC, and DCA that are unlikely to see nonstop service out of DEN on WN anytime soon.

I agree that WN bringing back DEN-PVD nonstop service might happen since DEN is one of the top destinations traveled to from PVD that isn't currently served nonstop from PVD on WN and since there is a significant amount of passengers connecting to destinations west of the Rockies from PVD.

WN is unlikely to add nonstop service to Caribbean or Central American destinations out of DEN as most of the Central American and Caribbean destinations served by WN aren't currently served nonstop from DEN on any airline.

I don't think that Southwest will be getting that many gates on C, there is a good chance that Delta will move back to C to make room for Frontier to expand on A. Delta has 6 gates now, but wants 7 or 8, leaving WN with 8 new gates and they could also take over the common use gate (C38) when construction is done on B and United moves back. This would bring them at least up to 32 which is what they have at Midway and BWI. Spirit also wants more gates but I am not sure if they will have any extra on C.

After doing some research, here is how the destinations break down for DEN and the other large hubs.

........Total......Domestic.....International
DEN 214........188................26
ATL 247........168................79
ORD 261........186................75
DFW 249........186................63

So DEN does have the most domestic destinations, but can't compete with international.
