Smartwings 739 stuck in the snow on takeoff at SVO

A Smartwings 737-900ER (OK-TSM) QS1003 was departing SVO for PRG, and had commenced it's takeoff run from Runway 01 when the aircraft veered off the runway and into a snowbank. The runway had to be closed and the aircraft dug out of the snowbank, causing delays. The 47 passengers and crew were not injured.

Any idea what the crosswind was? An airplane being perpendicular to the runway on a takeoff roll is very unusual.

Winter has definitely arrived in the northern hemisphere, bringing with it its usual lot of mostly minor runway and taxiway excursions it seems.

As long as it's only muddy gears and hurt prides...

Looks like a crosswind gust mixed with hitting a large patch of black ice if anything. Just like a car, once you hit ice you’re at it’s mercy

Not so smart. Good to hear that no one was injured. A/C damaged most likely.

I don't know why the poster used the title he did but it gives the impression that the airplane couldn't take off because of the snow. The snow didn't have anything to do with the take off incident.

The bigger question is if the crew had the engines stabilized prior to hitting TOGA. If not, the 737 can have uneven engine acceleration and there are lots of documented incidents of this. Add in the slippery conditions and this looks like this will be the case.

The photo to looks like the plane was not at a speed near take off. It likely hit a patch of ice I would think.

Given the volume of snow in central and eastern Europe this winter, I think airlines have done well to operate at all.
Can you imagine the chaos in the UK if we had even a small fraction of the snow experienced in some places this year.
That said, apparently AMS has issues with winds today and has had recently too, I find that surprising given the number of runways there.

At least with only 47 pax there was plenty of room for the passengers. That is a light load.

From footage, it is definitely uneven thrust. Left engine was far weaker than right causing the forced turn. Pilot applied full right rudder to try to redress right after full thrust. Nose wheel slipped in ice and rudder does not have enough authority to affect anything at that slow speed. Doubt the aircraft was damaged at all.

Reminds me of the Pegasus 738 which ended up on the cliff in Trabzon. I think it was asymetric reverse thrust or an engine surge
