Man, this is just cool. Probably the most well done retrojet by any airline so far (IMO, of course). Can’t wait to see the others.

They are. They are doing 3 x 744s - one BOAC, one Landor, one Negus and Negus/ "fag packet".

They are also doing an A320 in a BEA livery, but I am not sure if it is the Red Square or or the Speedjack. I suspect it will be the Speedjack though.

Lufthansa 747-8 is on par I'd say.

No. BA are recreating the final 1970-1974 BOAC livery, ie the livery worn by 747s. It was grey, not polished.

The original did not have winglets, so it might have detracted from the look.

The first ones had bare metal undersides. Not sure about the white rectangle above the boac on the engines. Also, my OCD says the flag is misaligned. Yes I do need a life :)

BOAC 747s were never grey on the underside, they were bare metal, only the wing root fairings were grey.

The engine decoration looks a bit half baked, should be the full length of the engine. How long before they replace BOAC with British Airways!!!!

Wha...? That photo from 1973 in my post clearly shows a grey-painted underside!

I think as Skipness is correct that some 747-136s were delivered with polished undersides, but they were later painted. If you have a look through the photo database, you will see most of the photos show them as painted.

No the 747-100's were metal (don't confuse dull and not polished with grey paint). The only grey is the wing box area- true of all other liveries at the time. Look again through the database and you'll see it's definitely metal. The only grey painted 747 was the leased in G-BDPZ that wore a hybrid EI scheme.

It looks great. However I regreat they didn't paint the belly and engines in a color closer to how it was then, and also I don't understand what the white band on top of the BOAC titles is doing there.

Yes I was thinking the lower half was polished metal. All three of my BOAC diecast model 741's are like this too. They also show the entire upper cowling as white, not just a rectangular area as shown in the retro.

The original engine cowlings were shorter than the current ones. I believe that the BOAC logo is the same size, but back then, it matched the length of the cowling with white above. Instead of stretching the blue and centering the logo, they retained the same size and matched it with a centered white stripe. IMO it would have looked better with both the blue and white stretched.

No, they were never painted grey on the undersides. Photos all show that, but when the natural metal became dulled they did have a certain grey appearance.

So many versions of a livery only carried on 13 aircraft over 3 years! G-BYGC has also been given the last 3 above the flightdeck but not atop the fin.

Btw I asked this a while back, is there a single photo anywhere of the last BOAC 747 G-AWNM, with BOAC titles rather than negus “British airways” titles on BOAC colours. Did it even carry BOAC titles?

Good question but since it did fly with the full BOAC stripes and tail it is highly likely that it also flew with BOAC titles too.

Engine cowlings don't look good painted the way they are. The original logo was on P&W engines that were of a completely different shape to the RR cowlings on the -400 but they could have centred the BOAC letters and painted the blue stripe and the white above the whole length of the engine cowlings instead of having it at an odd angle. Why is the British Airways Speed Marque facing the wrong way?? It should start just to the left of the and above the B as it would had it appeared in the current livery on the port side of the aircraft.

Never seen a single image to back that assumption up, it was delivered after G-AXXY was unveiled in BA colours as well.

Apparently there are a couple of mistakes being reported on BYGC's paint...there is a Union Jack flag that is painted upside down, and the belly should be painted silver!

744’s are BNLY / BYGC / CIVB
319 is EUPJ

Or so I’m led to believe....

So this would mean that all 744 destinations could receive a retrojet - BYGC is a Hi-J config Aircraft, BNLY / CIVB are Mid-J configured Aircraft.

Sorry, no. I am underwhelmed. The belly painted warm grey? It was shiny metal on BOAC, only the wingbox was grey. At least the could have used metallic paint. Or, if so lazy to use grey, then cool grey, not almost brownish warm grey. BOAC logo on engines is positioned too high up, it should be vertically in the middle.

The flag is painted correctly, in line with the original BOAC scheme and in accordance with UK flag convention.
The Flags and Heraldry Committee states: "When flags are painted onto a vehicle, or on the tail fin of an aircraft, the flag on the port side should show the obverse of the flag (ie. the flagpole on the left), while that on the starboard side should show the reverse (ie. the flagpole on the right). On surfaces perpendicular to the direction of travel (eg. the back of the vehicle) the obverse of the flag should be shown."

The grey belly...really? Can't people just enjoy a beautiful retro jet these days? Do we always need to find something to nitpick?
