It’s a shame that these liveries will never grace a 748 ☹️

My second favorite livery of all time. I wish they would revert back to this livery :(

Has any airline ever reinstated a previous livery?

That does look good. BOAC Speedbird and BA Landor are very much the Savile Row suits of aircraft liveries. Chatham Dockyard looks like the current affliction of wearing a suit without a tie by comparison.

You realise there’s a whole generation of people who will wax lyrically about the beauty of Chatham cos it’s their era? This is about getting old and remembering “better” days.
Watched G-BNLY land today at a cold and wet Heathrow and was reminded of how hard it is to shoot in anything but direct sunlight. It’s so grey! I love it cos it reminds me of my youth, but It screams shoulder pads and Thatcher’s 80s right at you.

I genuinely think Utopia, of which Chatham is but one, has been iconic and still looks ageless. BOAC and Landor are not ageless, I think that’s why they have such attraction as retrojets.

I agree. Landor was an iconic livery, no doubt about it, but the two images I associate with it are stiff upper lip formalism, which doesn't speak to the modern Britain, and grey as in a gloomy, rainy day in Manchester.

Utopia/Chatham still looks modern after 20 years.

BA had many 748's painted in Landor, I flew on several Scottish internal flights myself. Before that they had them painted up in Negus livery, great days ! Oh right you meant some other aircraft ? :D

Landor is stunning, it wasn't until I saw it in the flesh today that I realised what a beautiful design it was. It was elegant, authoritative and formal to the extreme which worked brilliantly for that era, a time when British Airways was probably at its height in terms of popularity. The livery and brand obviously wouldn't work today, it would appear dated and too stuffy but there are aspects of it that are timeless to me.

The 'Speedwing' is iconic, even to this day British Airways have attempted to recreate it by adding a thin red line to the 'Speedmarque' on certain advertising material, it failed to have the same effect and the same goes for the new crest, a gorgeous design but applied poorly in my opinion.

I'm also of the age where Landor is the livery I most associate my early years of plane spotting with so there's a lot of nostalgia there it has to be said.

And there we have it. Whichever livery seems to best represent your youth, is the one that you like best. I have no problem with that. Roll on the Negus 744 !

It would look hardly any different on a B748i, and as BA doesn't have any, it's a moot point!

Super high-J with WiFi.

BNLY is a mid-J (52 J) and has no WiFi, as there's no WiFi hump in the photos!

Embraer 195 in this would be appropriate. Brymon Airways conceived the idea of a STOLport in central London, was a BA subsidiary for many years, and Charles Stuart (CE) was the chap behind the idea of the British Airways Shuttle service. Be good to see this back at City again.

Would be great, maybe paint G-LCYY as needs a coat of paint. Sadly it won’t happen but I will certainly appreciate the 3 retros we have so far and G-CIVB when back in 10-12 days time.
Also the Landor scheme looks great behind in photo, especially those 75s.

LCYY got its full BA livery late last year.

Air India. The livery below didn't last long before they reverted to their old one. The Indian public liked the flying palace design too much.

I was gushing about the Landor livery 747 to my wife and showed her a pic without the context that it was retro. Her reaction was “OMG that is gorgeous. That new livery is way better than the current one and SO British.” I imagine she wouldn’t be the only one to feel that way and I hated to tell her it was a one-off

Landor is stunning but this is the lease excited retro one to me because I have already seen it before.
I will be better to have it on a 380, or even a 777 or 787. What a waste.

There were Landor 777s, for a couple of years upon the type's introduction.

A 787 or A350 would have been awesome but there was no appetite to repaint a plane prematurely or to leave the livery on for the length of time that a brand-new aircraft would go before being repainted.

I don't think so. B747-436 G-CIVB is at Dublin since 9 March to be painted in the Negus-livery. And that's number four, the final one.

Shame one of the 319s at Gatwick can't have Dan-Air on one side and BCal on the other. Would be fitting - a half-and-half retro specifically for Gatwick.

I hope next time I fly to London from Denver that I get on one of the heritage 747s. I need to go to the UK and Netherlands between 11 and 22 June and will most likely take the BA 747 LHR-DEN return. My fingers are crossed that I end up on one of the retros.

I just hope that they add the small back dot on the nose cone which is sadly missing on the BOAC retro 747.

All the aircraft during the Negus period had the black dot on the nose cone which I personally liked and I do hope that we see it on G-CIVB.

Although I find it very unlikely that British Airways would do a retro jet as you've described but if they did so now that would look magnificent at LGW especially the BCAL side although I think it would be better if it was on A320 considering the aircrafts history within the current British Airways fleet.

Yes, I like those black dots too, and not only on BOAC/BA aircraft. They tend to give the nose more character and personality. Especially when a plane has a pointier nose, like the 787, a black dot or black radome makes the nose look even more streamlined. Take a look at EL AL's retro 789 for example, it's 4X-EDF. Beatiful. It would look good on the A350 too.

Pardon the digression, but if BA marketing wants a drone flyover of the new liveries, what's the process of making that happen while on the ground at a busy airport?

Is it as simple as getting an ok from the tower, or are there more stops/certifications involved?

CAA approval and a time limited geo-unblocking facilitated by the drone maker. I've done one at Prestwick before but that's a very quiet airport compared to LHR.

There was a drone monitering some of the taxiway or building work recently at LHR. One of the tug drivers informed ATC but they already knew all about.

Great photoshop of a great livery, it looks so real :-)

Northeast was the second airline that I had the opportunity of flying on when I was 9yo on a Trident 1E from Heathrow to Palma.

Although I'm sure that it won't happen unless British Airways announced that further aircraft are to be painted in retro liveries but a Cambrian and Northeast livery on a A319 would look absolutely fantastic.

Exactly and I am one of them but as much as I would dearly love to see it I just can't see British Airways honouring British Caledonian Airways on any possible future retro liveries.

But in saying that wouldn't it be absolutely wonderful if British Airways could at least apply the sorely missed BCAL livery on a LGW based A320 :-)

It was an addition on the B747 from about 1980, it certainly wasn’t part of the original design when G-AWNN was delivered. Don’t think the TriStars had it either.

After looking at photos online the British Airways Tristars didn't have the black dot on the nose cone, the amount of times that I actually saw a British Airways L1011 in the flesh and without looking at the photos I would have sworn that they also wore the small black dot.

Skip I'm so glad that you mentioned the Tristars.

Even though it wasn't part of the original Negus livery I always liked the look of the B747 with the black dot and hopefully it will be applied to the retro livery but if it's not it's not going to be a big deal :-)

I'm hoping that British Airways take the opportunity to do a great photo shoot with all four aircraft together, on the ground and inflight although scheduling might be an
Issue unless it's already been preplanned.

Wish they would add British Caledonian, Dan-Air, British Midland International, Cambrian Airways and Northeast Airlines as part of the heritage livery.
These would have completed the series.
