USA Today is reporting that BA will paint one of its 747s in a BOAC livery.

not exactly retro but once Brexit is stopped BA should do a "World Tails" / ethnic livery with the EU flag and stars on the tail

I was hoping the 77W would get the BOAC livery but its history with the 747 makes perfrct sense. Maybe a 77W will recieve the Landor or Negus livery. BEA on a 787 wpild be stunning also.
When wasn't America great?

I'm really curious to see which aircraft is chosen for the Landor Livery. I can't take my eyes off the rendering of the A380. There has not been many liveries that made me say wow. But this rendering definitely did. Hopefully, BA feels the same

If BA did choose a 380 for the Landor Livery.....I'd be first in line to buy a model of that big boy :)

If Landor is to be done it would be good to see it on an aircraft that didn't have it last time around, so not on a 744, 772, or A320. One good suggestion I did read elsewhere was to do an A380 in a retro BOAC Stratocruiser livery, seeing as they were both 'double deckers'. Personally I don't see an A380 being done at all given the sheer volumes of paint, time and money involved.

Dream on sweety, we’re leaving the evil empire on 29 March or there will be a sequel to Guy Fawkes. Btw if you are right, then they’d all be white tails forevermore.
It’s looking like a BEA A320, BOAC 744, Negus 744 and Landor 744 which IMHO is as good as it gets. A BOAC 787 looks good but a BOAC livery on an aircraft type that flew with BOAC is even better. As for the other two, well I’ll just pretend I’m young again :)
For me, the resonance with G-CPET as the retrojet was that engines aside, it wouldn’t have looked out of place in the 80s.

Right there with the both of you.
I'd love to buy a model while taking a flight on it.

Looks nice doesn't it? Only the engines lack the BOAC stripe, but this is apparently an official British Airways render that Flightglobal obtained

I mentioned it in another post but.....does anyone else think that if BA can get the rights clearance to the name, a 777-336ER would look the absolute bollocks in BCal blue and gold?

BTW the article I referenced above mentions that Alex Cruz says all incoming new aircraft will continue to get the Chatham livery. Including the A350 fleet

I have a feeling BA will only retro paint other aircraft that will get withdrawn in the next few years hence it's the 744's getting done, with a 319 coming in BEA livery. Perhaps one of the early 772's will be done too.

Yes, scotching previous rumours that the A350 would launch a new livery or at least appear with Chatham Dockyard painted winglets. Given fears over a further bland IAG livery for BA, this may be even better news than the retro announcement !

Or alternatively on brand new 2019 deliveries, maybe a NEO or 787-10 or A350 will arrive in a retro scheme ? It would save on actual repainting costs until a major check respray is due.

Whatever; my point was probably not made as clearly as I'd have liked. The continuation of Chatham for now does mean no rebranding is imminent such as an IAG-type new livery akin to Iberia or the new Aer Lingus.

Boeing have done a few smart retro jobs recently such as the 748 for Lufthansa and the 789 for El Al.

I think BA’s brand has more value than what IB/EI has with a fairly white livery anyway. Hopefully we won’t see a new livery.

The scheme is off to a good start with a BOAC B744. Any of the others by CarbonFibre would be a blast to spot also. That BEA in a red box is so strikingly superb.

I disagree 100%. Thatcher was being jingoistic and small-minded as usual. The world tails were among the most interesting and beautiful liveries ever.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Airways_ethnic_liveries

From a marketing and branding standpoint, they were literally meaningless. Being all things to all men meant nothing to most people. Some were good, Chelsea Rose, Benyhone and Colum had British routes and were effective but the more abstract yli got, the less on brand they were. Ayling Airways was positioned to be a world airline based in the UK, whereas Eddington rightly saw BA as a British airline serving the world.
By the time you got to African tribal art and Devonshire pottery parked next to Canadian whaling abstract at T4, the penny dropped they’d gone too far. In the 22 years since, no one has copied the strategy, with good reason. Turkish serves more of the world than BA ever did but is there a call for their tailfins to be so adorned? Anyone fancy odds on an Emirates Japanese themed bird livery? No.

Agreed. Although, ironically, the concept behind it was anything but meaningless - and indeed, groundbreaking. Shame about the execution. It is still interesting to ponder what effect a more successful execution and reception would have had.

More interesting still is that Newell and Sorrell proposed the idea of different tail fins to BCal in 1987. The tail fins were to be different stylised tartans – remarkably similar to the tartan we saw on BA a decade later.

There were also some rather beautiful tails on PIA for a while; a region-based scheme connected to provinces of Pakistan. Again they didn't last long and logo tails were brought back.

Can someone explain how BA can be a 100 years old (i.e older than KLM)?
I know BA comes from merging BOAC and BEA in the 70s, but of all airlines that were first merged to create BOAC and BEA (like Imperial Airways or British Airways Ltd) none of them were founded in 1919.

This 747 will look stunning, the BOAC livery was timeless and classy.

Just to confound things, I strongly disliked Mrs Thatcher and her politics back then and I still dislike them today, but I did not like the BA World Tails; I thought that they looked messy and detracted from the idea of a recognisable livery.

I doubt if BA would repaint a 747, seeing that they're going to be withdrawn relatively soon. I suspect it will be something that will be around for some time yet and requires repainting -- I don't know if the A-380 comes into that category, but one of them in the old BOAC livery with the blue tail and Speedbird emblem would look great -- or something new, such as an A-350. (Apropos the A-380, I read yesterday that a Japanese airline has painted its first one as a turtle: painting an A-380 as a whale might have been more suitable, but I suppose whales on a Japanese plane would attract unseemly comments.)

KLM has the major difference that it is the same legal entity with the same name throughout.
What is now British Airways is the result of multiple mergers over many years, starting long before the immediate predecessors of BEA and BOAC. They trace themselves back to Aircraft Transport and Travel Ltd, founded in 1919 to operate between London and Paris.
https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/in ... e-our-past

It seems to have been the objective of successive British governments from 1920 onwards to create at least one strong and viable British airline. To that end mergers were encouraged, and really British Airways has dozens of predecessor companies, many shortlived and with only a handful of planes.

Steady on! :duck:

I thought BOAC had a pretty terrible service reputation in its day compared to its long haul competitors. The legendary service with BA was from the Colin Marshall turnaround beginning in 1983 through the early 2000s.

Thanks for the explanation.

Yes KLM is unique for being the same legal company with the same name all the way from 1919 to today.
Same thing for Avianca and Qantas.

- 1919 - on 25 August 1919 Aircraft Transport & Travel founded, as a subsidiary of Airco.
- 1919 - Handley Page Transport & Instone Airlines founded
- 1920 - Aircraft Transport & Travel bankrupt, its assets were used to create Daimler Airways.
- 1924 - Handley Page Transport, British Marine Air Navigation Co Ltd, Daimler Airways and Instone Air Line Ltd join together to form Imperial Airways Limited.
- 1939 - Outbreak WWII, Imperial Airways forced to merge with British Airways Ltd. by UK Government, new company is named British Overseas Airways Corporation.
- 1974 - BOAC & BEA merge into British Airways (state owned), with Cambrian Airways and Northeast Airlines added into the frame.
- 1987 - British Airways privatized.

Based on BA's somewhat construed claim to its 100 year heritage, LUFTHANSA would have been able to claim 100 years of operations in 2017. Deutsche Luft-Reederei was founded in December 1917. It commenced services on February 5, 1919 and became part of Deutscher Aero Lloyd in 1923. This company merged into Deutsche Luft Hansa in 1926.

First Scheduled Air Service:
- DELAG - founded November 16, 1909 operated airships until company was dissolved on March 21, 1935.

AIRLINES still operating today and celebrating 100 years of continuous existence:
- KLM was founded on October 7th, 1919.
- AVIANCA was founded on December 5th, 1919.
- QANTAS was founded November 16th, 1920.

Just out of interest, the forerunner of IATA (1945), the International Air Traffic Association was founded by 5x air transport companies in 1919 at The Hague, Netherlands. This Association helped airlines in standardizing their paperwork and passenger tickets and in comparing technical procedures. Up until that year, and for many years afterwards, much of the world’s commercial air transport activity was focused upon the carriage of airmail.

The founding IATA members included:
- Deutsche Luft-Reederei
- KLM

It's a bit like saying that I am 110 years old because my great grandfather was born in 1909. The logic is ridiculous.

Rumours on the grapevine says:
Landor, Negus & BOAC schemes going on 747-400's
BEA scheme going on an A319.

Technically accurate.
I am writing an email to BA to stop all this nonsense immediately.
No BOAC B747 for you.
Or anyone.

I hope you're satisfied x

Neither does today's British Airways have anything to do with the previous British Airways.

The original British Airways Ltd. was merged with Imperial Airways into the newly created BOAC in 1939, so there is a legal connection with todays BA.

A bit disappointing if true (except for the A319). We know what those schemes look like on a 747. It would be so much more interesting to have them on any of 787/A350/A380.

I suppose it must be partly to line up with regular repaint schedules. But even a Negus 772 would be more interesting!

True, the BOAC scheme also suits the 787 splendidly, but I guess it all comes down to painting schedules, leaving the newer types out of the running. And, if that has been a factor, that the particular airframes will be retired in a few years time, so they won't have to be painted once again.

744’s are BNLY / BYGC / CIVB
319 is EUPJ

Or so I’m led to believe....

BNLY was due for withdrawal this year but it’s going off for a refurb now I believe + it’s getting a livery so that plan must of been scrapped.

The cool thing about it is CIVB or BNLY will actually be returning to the colours they were delivered in.

I may be in the minority, but I really hope for most of these liveries to be on 744s. They won’t be around for long, there’s just a certain sentiment about them. Landor is one of my all time favorite liveries.
