Re: RDU "Big" Announcement 1/15 - 10am

Looks like Spirit isn't looking to attract just the leisure travelers for the to and from BWI, perhaps also targeting business travellers looking to fly out and come back the same day. Going 2x daily on the RDU-BWI route (one RT in the morning and one RT in the evening) mimics the flights between Baltimore and Atlanta/Boston, two major business markets, where they also have the morning and evening flights.

Just a reminder: there is already a general RDU discussion thread. This thread is only for the route announcement, so please stay on topic.

I can't see how BOS-RDU has enough traffic to sustain four carriers. RDU-CHI might make it on the basis of onward connections; BOS is not a logical or distance-efficient hub for domestic travel.

Do we have the timetables for spirit's flights? Are they planning on doing any connections?

This is the current timetable as of Dec. 20:

GSO, for what it's worth, flies to FLL, TPA and MCO. I can't see why NK at both GSO and RDU can't co-exist.
2019: DAL, MCI, PHX, LAS, DFW, SAT, ORD, SLC, SEA, DTW, PHL, MIA, LAX; B73G (WN x3), B738 (WN, AA, DL), A20N (NK), MD83 (AA), B788 (AA x2), CS1 (DL), B739 (DL), B712 (DL), B752 (AA), B763 (AA), B77W (AA), B789 (AA)

so what was the BIG announcement?

NK adding nonstop service to BWI, BOS, ORD, DTW, FLL, MCO, and MSY out of RDU, and this was mentioned at https://www.airliners.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=21012695#p21011061.

Was sarcasm I think because it’s only Spirit.
Yeah, getting a new carrier with 8 daily flights to 7 destinations at your airport in no big deal.

My comment wasn’t meant that it wasn’t a big deal at RDU. Was saying that was the posters sarcasm.

When most avgeeks think “big” they think international or international carrier, not Spirit to destinations already served. It’s “big” for people looking for low fares, but not big to many in a.net world.

I honestly think that F9 dartboarding has been great for RDU, because it has stimulated demand for RDU-midsize city pairings to the point that many of them now have daily non-stops from other carriers, like MCI, AUS, and now MSY. Hopefully something similar happens to other destinations from RDU, such as SAN, BUF, PVD, RSW, SJU, and MKE.

Can indigo just buy spirit already and create a large and dynamic ULCC for North America?

They could coexist, but the flights from GSO are not daily, and I worry that they may see loss of interest if RDU is flying the routes daily.

No problem. It is so hard to tell on here sometimes.

When will CLT see ULCC's if ever?
Frontier has been slowly inching in, but with the new concourse opening I thinking more would start popping up. Having only 1 airline flying CLT-MIA/FLL/PBI is ridiculous. I just payed $1200 for a CLT-MIA roundtrip. I've even tried the JQF-FLL on G6 despite the 1 flight a day and drive to Concord and then from FLL to Miami. Surely B6, WN, or NK could sustain decent loads to South Florida.
Vegas could be another option. AA has the monopoly there with several mainline daily, but I would think loyalty on the LV end would be enough for someone to start LAS-CLT.
Considering all these impulsive massive route expansions from NK and F9 lately, I was expecting to see CLT pop up again.
CLT-SFO also needs UA
CLT-SEA needs AK or DL

With American being such a bully in CLT (Insel Air & now Volaris) ULCCs could be able to attract a different demographic of traveller, and maybe AA won't feel they are necessarily losing customers.

Woes of a fortress hub......
