My first hope was that AS would announce daily, year-round IND-SAN -- since it's an announcement on a Thursday morning (6am PT.)

But I doubt the gov would attend that announcement.

Ummmm, what's the flag of Peru doing in the photo? Nonstop IND-LIM perhaps?

It will be interesting to see what happens tomorrow morning.

Delta to Mumbai. They decided to skip ATL and JFK (And DTW too!) and go direct IND-BOM — just to surprise airliners.net.

I think top three right now are:

1. IND-MEX
2. Routes Americas 2020
3. IND-YUL

We'll see tomorrow morning....

I'd have to agree.

They don't make FedEx announcements at the terminal. Never have and it doesn't make sense to do so.

Domestic announcements don't make any sense to have flags.

South America isn't a large enough market from IND to do without MEX.

Process of elimination.

Mexico is either 1, 2, or 3 in terms of trading partners with Indiana, think Industrial Machinery/Vehicles and Parts. Last time I checked Indiana sent the 3rd most vehicles to Mexico behind Michigan and slightly below Texas.

Cummins has a very large Central American operation, from their four manufacturing plants in Mexico they exported $ 1.2 billion, they also have an R&D facility there as well.
Eli lilly, and other Indiana companies have sizable operations in Mexico as well.

If the service is to MEX, it will be mainline. I doubt IND and the state put up money for RJ service. Also, that won't leave room for cargo. If the IEDC is involved, it is going to be mainline service.

Yeah, #2 would make sense given the assortment of flags.

Viva Aerobus has outfits in Peru and Colombia as well as Mexico so I'd guess them judging by the flags. But Canada and Brazil throw me off.

I believe Indy has a great chance of hosting Routes Americas 2020 (we are a great convention city) but I do not see that being appropriate for a press conference at the airport. Making that a press conference would mislead people to the point of severely making them angry. I believe the IAA is smarter than that (I hope). The average traveler isn't going to give two craps about a convention that they won't attend.

Manufacturing Industry with both strong auto and non-automotive industry ties.
I-69 which passes through Indiana is name the "NAFTA Superhighway" which along with other connected highways is on the direct path through the industrialized portions of Canada (SW Ontario), the Midwest, down through TX, into Mexico.

AM has a recent track record of using E90s to connect secondary markets in Mexico with strong manufacturing ties to DTW as a part of the DL/AM joint-venture. IND could potentially be one of those markets that makes sense to connect to MEX.

IND has a track record of putting some sweeteners in place to make these types of things possible.

I'm thinking is either AM to MEX or its some economic-development related announcement.

I'd be surprised if its mainline since AM tends to have a track record of starting new flights under the DL/AM with E-Jets.

Also, they don't need it for cargo. The type of cargo from most of the type of manufacturing if they are moving in any sort of large quantity tends to go with more of the "on-demand" type of services, like Kalitta or Jet USA.

That prezi you shared on the IND forum. Let me paste a portion of that.

Timeline

Indy hosting site planners in May
Contracting with host city in July
Host city announced publicly at World Routes in August

So #2 is clearly out of the cards as the host city is announced in August, not January. (Assuming I read this correctly that is).

I'm going to throw my chips on Mexico City by Delta. The flags are a dead giveaway for something Latin American and the governor coming gives more context. Although Aeromexico is also possible, seems that it would make more sense for Delta since they wouldn't have to establish an entire new station.

When this event was in CLE recently, it got barely, barely, barely any local media attention, let alone a governor showing up.

The Governor lives in Indianapolis, so its a 15 minute drive

ahhh OK my bad, Cleveland's event was some route planning event for Airport Council International. I have no idea how the two compare. I do know the one article I saw about it said there were reps from airlines all over NA and Europe in attendance.

Congrats to Indianapolis, this is a huge deal for them. Not only the free exposure to every meaningful airline to potentially provide service but this will also save the airport authority tens of thousands of dollars in expenses had this event taken place elsewhere.

lol no, it wasn't that bad.

While I would have much rather seen a new int'l flight, having representatives from every major North/South American Airline plus all the Major European carriers touring and visiting Indianapolis is a pretty big deal.

For one - hopefully Delta is smart and schedule the CDG flight to run around those days and times.

For two - does it really do anything for the particular host city other than there's a lot more Germans than usual eating at The Old Spaghetti Factory?

Not really, I'm saying.. what I said. Its great free exposure to both the airport and city, and it will save lots of money especially if IND has a promotional hut/stall which does not need to be shipped somewhere. I'd love for PIT to land one of these events.

Yeah, JumpStart is almost exclusively NA airlines though, and is usually hosted in midsized US cities: https://airportscouncil.org/conference/ ... #attendees

According to Routes Americas: "Host airport's networks grew by an average of 9% more than their benchmark after 3 years" plus an estimated $40 million in economic impact.

Don't think the governor should have been there though

That's a nice broad statement, but let's dissect that down.

2012 - The Bahamas
2013 - Cartagena
2014 - San Salvador
2015 - Denver
2016 - San Juan
2017 - Las Vegas
2018 - Quito
2019 - Quebec City

Looking at these cities, I'm going to call bullshit.

This is up there in the a.net hall of fame for completely lame, much hyped, and enormous let-down announcments.

The hall of fame includes:
CMH 5k
DFW international dance troupe
Pretty much any AirTran rumored big announcement circa 2003-2006
..and now IND RoutesAmerica conference.

The best part about Routes America 2020 Indianapolis is that some of the airports with the highest interest...STL, BNA, PIT, MKE, and CMH .... easier for them to drive.
