First Look: United reveals new uniforms

Thu Jan 17, 2019 12:45 am

With the exception of 1 or 2 pieces, I like the new looks. Fresh and modern. Different! It signals a change is in the air. Hopefully a new/updated livery is in the works too...

How nice that they incorporated a color set that is practically identical to Alaska Airlines' colors.
And then do I see some Passport Plum in there from Delta, too??
LOL.
Frankly, I think I see at least one smattering of pretty much EVERY color.
But yeah, overall an improvement.
I hope it hints at a future livery change, as well!

Not a single image in the opening post is displaying on my computer.

Nonetheless, I hope they've done away with the navy blue double-breasted potato sack dress that was so popular at Continental entirely.

A little all over the place in terms of color, but looks nice otherwise.

One thing that is guaranteed on a.net is that *any* new airline uniform, no matter which airline or how great or ugly it may be, will always be almost universally reviled. :fight:

I love the star trek look on both CS and the FAs, and I like a little passport plum for inflight! The purple muumuu over the basic blue airline pants on the model in the second image does not work. You need attire that works with many different body sizes and shapes, and the muumuu is not the right solution. But I think it is a win on the star trek dress.

Pretty good, except the 5th image from top down. The colors are appropriate for employees who work for Alaska instead.

Lol what? These are all over the place. And they don't seem to match the aircraft at all. A new livery has to be coming...

Not a fan of the FA tunic or the CSA double zipper cardigan. That being said, they at least have more color than the current uniforms, even if that color is all over the place.

Doesn’t the pattern on the dress look a whole lot like the new AS uniforms?

The double zipped sweater screams “Stan Herman US uniforms” from the merger with HP.

Cut of the pilot uniform looks good, tie color seems odd.

Below the wing looks great.

OMG to the Hawaiian shirt and khakis shorts. That's like my everyday attire in the summer, love it.

The rest of the uniforms remind me of something straight out of the 1980s. The Men's pilot and F/A uniforms look like the legacy UAL uniforms they got in 2006 and had until shortly after the merger.

I have to say I really like them. I didn't realize how little gold there is, I think y'all are right a new livery is coming. Some of the dresses have lines that remind me of a sideways "U" logo. Interesting color choice with turquoise and purple, I wonder where they got that from?

Hmmmm! Where is that teal (or seafoam green) color coming from?!?!?! Also, what in the world is that blue, shiny top supposed to me?!?!? Otherwise, the more basic pieces of the FA and CS uniforms work.

Honestly, I really like the current FA uniform. I think it is one of the more streamlined, professional, yet elegant looking uniforms out there.

So where are the Hawaii only uniforms? I recall the flowered outfits the FAs used to wear. I didn't like the black shirts and shorts outfits. They don't look Hawaiian to me. And I recall at least one or two FAs wearing their private flowered aprons on Hawaii flights after this special attire was dropped by UA. Some actually put flowers in their hair....I know it was a fake flower but who cares.

Agreed. I try hard to not be resistant to change, but this is a step backwards from the current look. That said, I can appreciate the need to keep up with joneses and have something new... and it’s an easy bone to toss employees to be excited about

Oddly enough, it's probably going to be the most flattering piece for a lot of the senior flight attendants since their body style doesn't really lend itself to the more formal pieces.

I agree with all of this. I, too, really like the current FA uniform and don't know why they are already changing it--it's not that old. I wouldn't mind seeing the toothpaste blue and bright yellow of the ground staff current uniforms being replaced, but otherwise, I don't know why they are fixing something that's not broken.

I am also not a fan of the seafoam green color and REALLY hope UA does not incorporate that into any new livery in the works. As much as I love dark purple as a color and think it looks good in the Premium Economy seats, it's also too trendy a color to be incorporated into a hypothetical new livery that could last 10-20 years.

ETA: I do NOT like the new male FA jacket. All that white piping looks very nautical. I imagine a lot of (heterosexual) males will argue that it looks too dandy. (I'm saying this as a gay man--don't write me!)

That's the most striking thing about the direction UA's brand is taking, and while I like most of what I've seen, it is odd to see the de-emphasis of gold. Navy and gold is always a great combination and I thought it differentiated the UA from the other, more patriotic-looking majors.

Shout out for that wrap however - looks very classy. Now they just need to enforce proper grooming standards!! Hair worn up, off the shoulders, face and food!!

No, I agree. I've always thought the more tailored uniforms look much better. I have to say, until now (in looking at these), I've always thought United had the most professional looking uniforms of all the U.S. carriers. The vests look good, the jacket vests are sleek, the ties and shirts are nice. The only piece I never liked on the current United uniforms is those dumb scarfs with the city names on them. I think that came from CO? It was so 1990s.

That teal is called Pacific Blue  I’m fine with the male stuff, but quite a few of my female colleagues are more than a little unhappy with what they see. The feedback I’m reading on the employee website is making that perfectly clear. These won’t make an appearance until late next year so there is time for.... reconsideration... of some of these looks.

For those of you asking where these colors came from, they are all part of the new color palette United introduced last year and will continue to use going forward. Reference the second link in the OP.

Also, these are just some of the looks. There’s others that have been released internally.

I must say though, I do find them somewhat clashing with the Polaris lounges and cabin - will premium team members have a different uniform?

No news release on the UA website - I suspect there are more options to these uniforms.... be good to hear UA add detail and context

I... Guess I like it? Sort of? I don't know--it's too all-over the place to have a singular opinion of it, and I guess maybe that in itself is a bad thing?
Some things may get weeded out with the wear test. There were five or six garments in the initial Delta reveal that never actually made it out on the line because the wear test proved them unpopular... So although this is a lot right now, it might get streamlined a bit more.

My big "issue" with this, is how different the two customer-facing work groups look. Not only is it disjointed looking and potentially confusing to the customer, but I also find doesn't really help morale. Within all airlines, there's this Customer Service vs. Flight Attendant combative relationship. The two groups have to work so closely together, but the customer service agents take way more crap, generally have worse work rules and get blamed for more, in terms of flight delays. Having the two groups dressed SO differently, I find really continues to deepen that divide. When Delta came out with the new uniform and both groups were dressed identically with the exception of the signature dress for each group, immediately it felt more like everyone was on the same footing, and had the same worth. That then translates to a better customer experience.

For all y'all getting excited about a new livery, I wouldn't hold your breath. When Delta went purple, people were waiting for the plumb planes to match--not so. Just accents here and there. United has taken delivery of enough new aircraft types recently that it a livery had been coming, this would have been better timed...

You know, I’m wondering who the Hawaiian shirts are for? I’m assuming CSA’s in Guam/HNL/Tropical outstation. Surely, FAs will never be wearing shorts? Haha but then again, SWA FAs have an option of wearing Dickies shorts (which makes them look more like a rap agent imo). Overall, I like these (except for #4 & #5). I am quite upset though about the pilot uniform not having the gold stripes anymore. Silver is so AAL...

Not to be politically incorrect or anything, but I’m assuming this is an option meant for the “+” sized employees. Can’t tell you how many of them complain about “looking fat” in the current outfits. What they cannot apparently grasp is loose fitting clothing makes them appear even bigger... In any case though, I totally agree with you... I have no idea wth this is or why any company would choose this as their uniform. Haha

Overall they’re not bad, nothing groundbreaking, but also not awful, other than that FA blouse thing. That thing is hideous. I agree the color palette is sort of all over the place, which Amy point to a new livery.

The vests look good, the jacket vests are sleek, the ties and shirts are nice. The only piece I never liked on the current United uniforms is those dumb scarfs with the city names on them. I think that came from CO? It was so 1990s.

What needs to happen imo, is the company needs to make it mandatory for employees to get the uniforms tailored. IIRC the company will cover the costs to have it done.

agreed. It seems that there really isnt anything original here. Looks like a bit of DL, AS and Virgin America combined.

While #4 & #5 are indeed dreadful, the rest are pretty nice looking imo. Then again, no matter what they came out with you’d say it was dreadful...

Some of those colors look more Alaska and Westjet. Not that there's anything wrong with those airlines, its just that it makes me wonder if United is really creating a unique brand unto itself?

Well done UAfor showcasing the uniform on a range of crew and not just a hand selected team of part time models on staff or worse hiring in from an agency. The uniforms look good on everyone. 1

The ramp wear looks to have the Carhartt logo on it so that is a good sign.

Those "Aloha" shirts (no self respecting person living in Hawaii would call it a "Hawaiian" shirt, but I digress...) almost look Reyn Spooner like. Not bad really...

Can someone from UA share the full collection? No point judging half - be good to see their style and grooming guide too to understand standards.
