SDF to change its name to Muhammad Ali International Airport

Thu Jan 17, 2019 12:46 pm

SDF (Louisville) to become Muhammad Ali International Airport, because Standiford Field is like so 1995.

Even more fun - the man was afraid of flying.

Reason: Title updated
if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport

Now they should change code to TKO.
Riddle: Which lasts longer, a start-up airline or a start-up football league?

Good one. Took me a minute to get it. Do the airplanes that land there float like a butterfly and sting like a be? Is it the world’s greatest airport?

Oh heads will soon be exploding over this one. He converted to Islam and refused to go to Vietnam. Going to make more than a few Kentuckians upset.

From an objective perspective, I actually think it's a good idea. Most people don't really associate him with Louisville but by renaming the airport, people will slowly start to connect the two and increase the presence of Louisville as his hometown which most people otherwise would not have known. His name is well known and has a strong identity, so it would make sense why SDF would want to associate themselves with it.

Very cool. I wonder if this is the first US airport named after a Muslim American.

Unfortunately Ali isn't around to accept the honor.

Unfortunately Bill Cosby showed why you need to wait till someone is gone before you name things for them.

I guess Reagan was alive but mired in dementia when National Airport was named for him.

An airport named after a man who was afraid of flying reminds me of "John Wayne Airport" (SNA): John Wayne lived in Newport Beach and absolutely hated the airport. He, along with every other NIMBY in Orange County wanted it torn down.

Nice to see SDF taking the name not of a politician, but of a respected civil rights icon. Great way to honor the man and the city he was from.

They should have named it after him 40 years ago. Good step.

This has to be the most controversial airport name in US history. I don't see the good ole boys of Kentucky being big fans of having their airport named after him

IMO, Addison Mitchell McConnell International Airport would’ve been the better choice.

Is this just what we suppose will happen or do we know that Kentuckians will hate this? Are you guys who are saying this has Locals or just guessing this will happen?
First Id rather give them (Kentuckians) the benefit of the doubt. Is there some ties to Muhammad Ali with Kentucky? Did he live there, was he known to the area residents or not?

He is from Lousiville and is probably one of the most divisive figures of the 1960s so saying part of the population will hate it isn't a stretch. The next level part of it is that the gateway to Louisville is named after him and that will make heads explode.

Vandals have already hit artwork of Muhammed Ali in Lousiville painting racist and homophobic over it so we will see how naming your airport after a controversial person will go

When I was 8, I was swimming in a hotel pool one day when I was dragged out by by Mum to meet the man. He was staying at the same hotel and she'd ran into him and his entourage.

This was Tehran, Iran. The year was 1993, and I had no idea who this man was, why an American had an Arabic name, or why he was shaking. But he was super nice, shook my hand, had a conversation with me about swimming, was impressed by my English, and invited us to lunch (Mum declined).

To this day, I dad no idea he was from Kentucky. If you'd asked me to name someone from Kentucky, I'd have said Taylor Swift and Mitch McConnell. So if the Louisville officials wanted to to place the city "on the map" by this move, they have indeed succeeded.

Thank you helped me a lot with that response. We have some similar/like examples from the area.

I do always wonder how much of these kinda issues are a tail wagging the dog. I believe this happens in a lot of different issues. I'm maybe just too optimistic,

Should have changed the name of it to "Hunter S. Thompson Int'l", instead, and changed the code to "HST".

Only half kidding. Still, great honor for an American hero.

Naming things after a living person is always a risky move in any event.

There will be some controversy with this move. Ali refused to serve his country, that will not sit well with veterans. Being a great boxer will not make up for that.
On the other side of this, won't the Standiford family be upset by this?
Is just me, or is flying not as much fun anymore?

I don’t see that as a issue anymore, most of the folks you mentioned most likely voted for Trump, who is open about the fact that he faked a disability five times to avoid service in Vietnam. It was “too far away”, according to Trump.

Trump, who is currently the president of the USA refused to serve his country. I think this will be the least of Ali's worries.

So did the pot-smoking draft-evading Bill Clinton and I voted for him. Twice.

If I was a resident of Louavul, I would be delighted to have the airport named after The Greatest.
He showed immense courage in opposing an unpopular war at great personal cost.
People may not like his decision and I respect that, but they need to respect his right to do what he did.
Oh and the SCOTUS overturned his conviction, which should mean something right?

Or they could name it Hot Brown International. (Google it before flaming me if unfamiliar)

Muhammad Ali is also famous as a civil rights movement figure. Maybe look up his reasons for refusing to "serve his country".

Is there a more famous Kentuckian in the whole world?

No. No there is not.

If the good ole boys have a problem, they should try getting famous.

It is the perfect name for the airport, and I don’t even think it will be particularly controversial.

As if being "famous' was any sane person's litmus test for the naming of an airport.

Let's change LHR to Lady Di International
LAX to Charles Manson International
VIE to Adolph Hitler Airport
ULN to Genghis Khan Airport
JRS to Jesus Christ International

Considering Standiford Field became Louisville International Airport in 1995, I don't know if that would be a major problem, to be honest (interesting fact: LOU is assigned to Bowman Field, which was Louisville's main airport prior to SDF's opening).

That said, the Louisville area always struck me as more, for lack of a better way to put it, liberal than most of the rest of the state, which is seen as conservative. I don't think it would cause too much of an uproar in Louisville. Other parts of the country, perhaps, but at the end of the day, it's a local decision and I think people outside of Louisville should at least respect that (not to say don't voice an opinion, but to me, it's not a pressing life or death issue that I'm worrying about).

The new name is widely welcomed in Louisville. Ali is a legend in the city. Just look up footage of his funeral procession a few years ago. There’s a street downtown named after him and a museum/event center. His childhood home has also been turned into a museum.

There are of course people that complain about it, but it’s typically the same NIMBY crowd that doesn’t want a Top Golf going into one of the busiest areas of town because the lights will be too bright.

Actually, I’m in favor of any name that is not after a politician. Airports and buildings should be named after people who do good for the country Not politicians.

Very true. Everyone I know in Louisville supports the name change. We don't care about the folks that are angry about the airport being named after a black man, because more than likely they don't live here.

Let me just get this straight.
You choose to compare Ali to 3 mass murderers, a quasi-mythical "miracle worker" made famous via Roman crucifixion, and a teen plucked out of obscurity to wed an aging bachelor prince in need of wife and child ?
Okay, whatever.

You've accurately described a great many of today's "great people", from athletes to entertainers to "social media stars" to the current POTUS; and - this is the MOST easily Idolized Age, more so than decades ago.

How many things are named after Charles Lindbergh?
One guy opposed US involvement against Nazi Germany (for questionable reasons)
One guy opposed US involvement in a post-colonial, asian civil war, using the bodies of a 2nd class citizenry.

I note you choose to refer to Ali as "Clay", which suggests where you stand on him personally.

There will be some controversy with this move. Ali refused to serve his country, that will not sit well with veterans.

Very little.
Most veterans are young enough to fully realize what a horrible mistake the Vietnam War (or the "American War" as the Vietnamese would tell you, rather rightly) was in very obvious retrospect. How do you imagine black veterans of any age feel about Ali ?

Vandals have already hit artwork of Muhammed Ali in Lousiville painting racist and homophobic over it so we will see how naming your airport after a controversial person will go

(I have no opinion on Ali disclaimer)

You forgot to mention that this vandalized mural also portrays Abraham Lincoln and Col Sanders AND that it is not the first time this specific mural has been vandalized.
Since when does a single person with a can of spray paint dictate or accurately reflect the mood of a populace?

BTW - being "one of the most divisive figures of the 1960s" is hardly any kind of indictment. The entire era was divisive, and Ali put his principal ahead of money and personal gain. He certainly did not continued to be viewed as divisive from the 80's onward, and rightly so.

Stop it. JUST STOP IT!

Stop naming airports after people. Just name it after the location/city served.

LAX... Los Angeles International Airport
SFO... San Francisco International Airport
SEA... Seattle Tacoma International Airport
MIA... Miami International Airport

BUR... Bob Hope Airport... or maybe it’s Hollywood Burbank Airport (who the heck can keep up?) should be Burbank Airport.

ATL... Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport should be Atlanta International Airport

When I fly into the LA area and someone asks which airport, I say:
- LAX
- Orange County
- Burbank
- Long Beach

If they want to name a terminal after someone, fine. But the airport should be named for the location/city served!!

IMO, Addison Mitchell McConnell International Airport would’ve been the better choice.

Seems weird to name an airport after a traitor to the United States.

To change name implies a large waste of money.
