First Delta A330neo Rolls Out Of Paintshop

Mon Jan 21, 2019 1:32 pm

Beautiful plane! The first Delta A330-900neo has rolled out of the paint shop.

https://airwaysmag.com/airlines/first-d ... -rollsout/

The plane is still missing its engines. But it sure looks beautiful!

Any ideas on potential delivery dates?

From this angle it looks like DL is going with the larger DL titles in the front similar to the A350. It looks good with the mask around the cockpit windows.

Sans engines, looks like DHL or FEDEX will be the fastest way to deliver it.

Just a little humor for a Monday.
God, give us wings to fly!

Doesn’t bode well for a DL A338 anytime soon (DL sizes the titles so they are the same size across a fleet type and so that they don’t overlap the doors in the shortest variant).

Where will these planes be delivered to? Will they first go to MSP like previous A330 aircraft for delivery and mods prior to entering revenue service or will they go somewhere else first?
As of Dec 2019 I've flown 457,440 miles on 270 flights on 54 airplane types with 60 airlines traveling thru 104 airports. I've visited 60 countries.

So larger titles clearly fit on a 330... wonder why they chose to make them so small on the ones they inherited from NWA?

As I mentioned before DL keeps the title size consistent across fleet types, and sizes them so they never overlap any exits. The 73G/738/739 all have the same sized titles sized to fit the 73G, the A319/A320/A321 all have the same sized titles designed to fit the A319, the A332/A333 have the same sized titles, designed to fit the A332, etc . That is why DL’s A333 titles are so small.

DL has either decided to just go ahead and consider the A339 a “new” fleet type and resized the titles to be spaced perfectly between the exits, or has now decided that they will size titles for individual variants and not fleets.

Yes, but the tow up to cruise altitude can be bumpy.

I think it has more to do with putting diminutive titles on airplanes that are "never ever really Delta," whereas the 339 is a legacy Delta jet and deserves more respect. :D

The aircraft looks shiny & new in the pic (well, it's SUPPOSED to!), but I never was too fond of this livery. Too much plain vanilla white paint for me. I miss "wavy gravy," or better still, "classic widget"!

MAX’d out on MAX threads. If you are starting a thread, and it’s about the MAX - stop. There’s already a thread that covers it.

What is the configuration I am assuming they will be delivered with the new D1 Suites upfront. Does anyone have an understanding if the ceilings will be cathedral ceilings up front with no bins above the middle seats in the same way the A350 lacks center bins in business? I know it doesnt seem like that big of a deal but I found it very soothing and makes the cabin seem so much more spacious vs the current DL A330's with center bins.

Still wish it didn't have that black "mask" around the cockpit windows though; I think the classic A330 nose is more appropriate.

Are you sure about that? Information i received late last year showed 403 in Q3 and 404 in Q4. Things for sure could have changed and been accelerated.

There's just something I don't like about this aircraft. (Not the livery, but the actual aircraft). Those wingtips just seem off to me.

I agree. I love the A330neo, but the wingtips should be taller i think, or just be non-existent. I don’t know the correct names for wingtip types sorry.

I know! I cant wrap my head around it. I'm bery partial to tye old school bib style. That would look great on an A330.

Well April is less than 2.5 months away. You need to also consider interiors which may not be installed already. And the #1 unit of the new type to a new customer always takes longer than usual. So 70+ days to get all that done + FAA paperwork (which is partially shutdown btw) is not completely out of the ballpark.

Glad I’m not the only one who is not a fan of the raccoon mask. It’s grown on me with the 350 because it was there from the outset but it just looks misplaced on the 330. I read on here a while ago Airbus is planning on rolling it out across its line up? Hope that isn’t the case. Is there any purpose to the black mask or is it just a marketing gimmick ?

Marketing gimmick. With the 350 there may be a purpose but I doubt there was a change to the window structure on the 330 that requires the black mask.

Don’t think the government shutdown should be an issue for new aircraft entering service anymore. The WH ordered thousands of FAA safety inspectors to report back to work without pay which should help with the backlog of new aircraft waiting to enter service.

I loved the wavy gravy. Don't know if the entire DL fleet ever got painted into it, though. Anyway, both wavy gravy and classic widget are very dated to my eyes nowadays. I like the current "Northwest widget" livery!

Exactly. Part of why I don't like the new AC livery much, they copied the raccoon mask. Looks stupid. The "Arctic Blue" or whatever it was called before this was far classier/nicer looking IMHO.

I don't understand why so many are so ga-ga over this...in terms of looks it's basically just another DL A330 but now with sharklets and a raccoon mask!

The always-graceful A330 wings with the new tips are beautiful. On the other hand, the raccoon mask should be put out of its misery (as it should on the A350). It just says I'm Trying Sooooo Hard to be Futuristic.

I'm a big fan of the racoon mask makes the plane look fresh and new... Also will help with identifying the plane.

The mask around the cockpit windows on Air Canada's new livery is homage to the Thunderbird on Western Canadian Totem Poles. Nothing to do with a raccoon.

Based on this thread, the people who hate the black mask seem to be by far the majority. Or is it that the people who object are far more vocal than those who are happy to see it and know it is going to stay, so it's not worth commenting..

For myself I think it looks great and futuristic. I wish it could be one big curved window, but I think I read that they couldn't achieve that with current technology. I'll bet a one piece smooth windshield would give at least another 0.001% in fuel efficiency !

I thought I read on another thread a while back that the black mask is at least partly done to make windshield changeouts simpler because the trim would be the same color (black) regardless of the operator's livery. I like the raccoon mask...I think it looks distinctive and agree it will be a nice way to distinguish the neos from the ceos. Count me on team yea instead of team nay.
