IB schedules 3x/daily MAD-MEX June-Oct19 all flown by A346

Although it isn't the first summer season which sees 3x/day on MAD-MEX, this year it'll be DAILY Jun-Oct.

Starting June 2019, the 21x/week* frequencies will remain all the summer until the 1st of October.

*Exception on Thursdays of September, which will only see 2x/day. Schedule as follows:

MAD-MEX
IB6405 0915-1355
IB6403 1315-1745
IB6409 2355-0415
MEX-MAD
IB6400 1240-0630 (+1)
IB6406 1555-0950 (+1)
IB6402 2005-1410 (+1)

From November on the operation gets back to the regular 17x/week, triple flight on Monday, Thursdays and Sundays.

All flights to be operated with A346.

Mexico will be by then the largest market seats/week for IB in Latin America.

Considering the A346 will be deployed in GRU from March19, plus the utilization of them in the LIM, BOG (these 2 also to become 2x/day in the peak of the S19), UIO, MEX, SCL and EZE routes... do you see them going? Apparently this year 2019 the first one should be leaving the fleet.

...And completely different thing, but taking into account the volume of this MEX-MAD sector for IB, could have this been targeted with the A380? IAG said IB could never fill such a dense cabin, but this MEX-MAD market will be offering nearly 15.000 seats/week, although right, only seasonal.

This is one route that could potentially support an A380, but then you'd lose frequency which IAG value massively.

They'd need 3-4 MEX-size markets to make the business case for the A380, and even then they'd likely just move to A35K instead.

For obvious reasons, the A380 is very valuable under BA, so that they can maximize the constrained operation of Heathrow.... very true.

What's the "smallest" market where BA sends the A380?

IB needs the B779 or A35K...........

Yeah, I think a 380 or two could actually do really well at IB to MEX and EZE. I always thought an ideal model would be wet lease it from BA and use IB cabin crew so you don't have the small fleet problem.

But I feel like BA could use a few more themselves. But a huge capex without clarity on Brexit would be not so great for BA so I wouldn't be shocked for a top up order from IAG later this year.

I'm weird and actually think that the 380 will be manufactured for a long time as it clearly serves it's niche very well and even if it loses money on accounting for development costs, it can still generate free cash flow for the company. I think the next year or two will be the sign of if I'm right or not as airlines will have to start deciding on replacing existing fleets from the oldest frames.

MAD-EZE could also support A380.

The 380 fits perfectly well for IAG at LHR because of volume and slots. MAD-MEX or MAD-EZE, the two routes where IB could deploy the 380 have the volume, but with no slot-constrains at MAD, why? They'd lose out on frequency, which is key to the business traveler. Bringing in such a complex aircraft for just two routes seems a bit over the top, as has been the case with MH.

What are second hand 380’s selling for? At what point do they need to be priced at to entice IAG?

Buy used at good prices, lower the risk and then if they work out you have a tougher decision to make. But in the meantime you have an excellent hub tool.

Hard to gauge a price because they aren't selling...At all. Hifly is the only one to operate a second hand 380, just one aircraft. I do not know if that is leased or owned but am almost certain that it is leased.

If I Were UX I would hurry up and Get slots in MEX because IB is monopolising MAD-MEX

Nice to see the A346 still being a valuable workhorse flying the big routes.

Doesn't the Iberia A346 and A359 both have about 340-350 seats, so that A35K and B779 will be way too much capacity?

YVR, just once daily summer only service and that's across all IAG companies and JV partners.

A valid point, but of course some destination airports eg MEX, JFK are slot constrained. IB even send wb's to LHR

Not really a monopoly; AM operates twice daily to MAD and IB will be back at parity with AM once the summer is over. That said, it'd be nice to see UX at MEX.

Too much capacity that would flood those markets with cheap seats & trash yields. And little room for cargo (the 380 lacks cargo space). Don't forget Iberia has the goose that lays the golden eggs in Latin America. Why would it try to sabotage itself?

Clearly Iberia is not struggling for extra slots at MEX & JFK. The afternoon wide body MAD-LHR-MAD is to provide cargo space that the A320 family can't, not because of LHR's slots. Same with BA, having a 777 rotation in the AM to MAD. I've even seen a BA 77W at MAD recently.

An A380 would be a terrible idea at Iberia but they are great at BA. IB configures their planes very differently then BA with much less J class a no First Class. BA's A380 have 97 J class seats, Iberia would have say 50 j seats. That means an IB A380 would have a huge amount of y seats to fill which could be 600 seats in total. MEX, EZE, JFK, MIA, BOG and whatever markets could support an theoretical IB A380 are better flown by multiple daily A350-900, A340-600 or Boeing 777 or 787-9 should Iberia ever order Boeing again. A380 are great between huge financial centers with plenty of Business Class demand, IB Latin centric route system is not that market.

That's a fallacy. The higher separation requirements for the A380 eat up all the capacity gains from compared to a 77W or 747.

I would also think the boom and bust nature of LA would drive some caution st and Iberia.

How many frequencies does Aeromexico have? I see some days in summer are 3xdaily, so it means MAD-MEX will be up to 6 daily flights (!). Incredible. Yet no one can make MEX-BCN work

PAX numbers have increased from 2017 to 18 in Buenos Aires (814k to 866k) and Caracas (170k to 215k) despite the current economic situation in Argentina and Venezuela. Ironically in some of those cases, economic crisis mean more demand for flights out of the country (Venezuela) and while some other carriers might leave the country (again Caracas), Iberia/Air Europa will always remain because of the much larger O&D market, so they take a more prevalent position in those places.

In any case, in the coming global financial crisis Iberia will probably be hurt, but I don't see IB would be in a worse position that, let's say, Air France or Lufthansa.

Awesome! Frequency is totally where it's at. At both ends of the flight, there are likely lots of connections to be made. For Latin America, Iberia has agreements with Interjet, LATAM, Copa, and Avianca. Travellers appreciate not having to make extra overnight stays in order to make connections.

I agree that frequency is important, but the additional 405/406 flight doesn’t prevent anyone having an overnight stay and leaves MAD a bit early for inbound connections. There is a good selection of flights through the day, however which is good.
Against 3 large wide bodies, would two VLA flights really be such an unattractive schedule? Frequency between Dublin and London, Madrid and Frankfurt or Boston and Washington are one thing, I feel frequency on a 12 hour intercontinental journey is less important. The A380 suffers as it has relatively poor cargo abilities compared to a 77W or 744 or A346. I think it’s part of the reason the a380 has sold relatively poorly. Airlines need a selection of very premium heavy, cargo light routes which can absorb more Y capacity too.

Iberia will stop the 3rd flight to EZE on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from mid February. The economics in Argentina aren't doing good, at all.

I remember when IB still had the MIA hub they would have two daily 747s with a third frequency on some days.

Too big. The A359 is the perfect replacement for the A346 as we've seen LH do exactly that.
