TAM's inaugural A330 schedule 1998

Sun Jan 27, 2019 11:07 am

Hey guys,

TAM got their first pair of A330s in 1998, and while I believe the first route to be GRU-MIA, I have been unable to find any information on the inaugural schedule. Does anyone have a source on, or happen to recall, the flight numbers, frequency, or timing of these flights?

It must have been awesome to watch the 2 A330s arrive together in CGH, I wonder if the thought ever crossed anyone's mind during the inauguration that, perhaps, TAM would grow over the next 20 years to outlast VARIG and VASP to become Brasil's principle longhaul carrier. Aviation is wild! :)

Thanks!

TAM actually started their long-haul venture in the worst possible time. 1999 was a rough year for Brazilian aviation and when things started to get better, 9/11 happened.

TAM only survived because TR and VP went bankrupt first.

When things started to improve from that, the perspective of a left-wing government made things difficult again.

TAM only survived then, because RG went bankrupt first.

Here is a video from the festivities surrounding the delivery of the A332s:

What does the election to power of a leftist government (ie the PT under Lula) have to do with effecting TAM’s success?

For over a decade, Brazil boomed like never before under the PT, with a resultant strong increase in air traffic...

Well, you are confusing correlation with causation.

The perspective of a left-wing government drove the BRL into maxi-devaluation, which created the issue for the aviation sector.

The prospect of Lula's election at the time made financial markets very volatile. Weeks before Lula's election in 2002 the dollar was very close to 4 reais. A recent inflation-adjusted estimate for it puts it at above 7.50 reais in today's money. For TAM that put a big dent on the potential market for long-haul to Florida which is heavily weighted on leisure travel originating in Brazil.

Whether Lula/PT is left or right is irrelevant. They are just a gang of thieves posing as socially-minded. Brazil's boom is much more due to the Chinese economy sucking in raw materials from Brazil than good government, which is something Brazil has never had.

January 1999:

JJ890 GRU 2358 0500+ MIA
JJ891 MIA 2000 0659+ GRU
JJ894 GRU 1030 1530 MIA
JJ895 MIA 0915 2015 GRU

All flights daily.

TAM's first regular flight to MIA was December 10, probably with the PT-MVA. Before that, a special flight was made with employees. This flight had purposive problems, with delays, "lost" the baggage, etc. It was a way to show how these problems could put away the customers.

Great pictures and video! A somewhat related question: why (till today) is 'The Magic Red Carpet' added to the front of the fuselage? Any particular meaning to the phrase? Thanks!

Nowadays the phrase is not being used anymore, although some planes still have this from last paint job. This was a reference to their previous service of using a red carpet when boarding (and subliminar higher level service - at least intended).

'The Magic Red Carpet' purportedly refers to the service excellence that the former owner embodies. He wanted all passengers journey to be as pleasant as possible. Hence great emphasis on cabin crew training.

Onto the top, JJ is one of few airlines which went on to operate A330 with all engines types, although may not be all at same time.

Interesting that the flight numbers haven’t really changed in the past 20 years other than with the addition of a 0.

When did TAM switch to 4-digit flight numbers? I always thought it was unusual that they used flight numbers in the 8000 range when most other airlines use 1-3 digit flight numbers for intercontinental flights.

I would have loved to witness an 2 A330 landing at CGH. I've spotted there many times when I was younger and remember it fondly! TAM's A330 were what little me dreamed about often.
