CA IAH - PTY - IAH route performance

Sun Jan 27, 2019 9:30 pm

Anyone knows how well, Air China IAH - PTY service is doing? Also how well is it performing from PEK - PTY - PEK?

Do they enjoy fifth freedom rights on the route? If I had a reason to visit Panama, I’d go out of my way to fly the route.

Loads are bad. Can’t imagine yields are better.

Yes, the can carry local traffic on IAH-PTY.

I looked into it when I visited PTY a few months ago but decided to stick with UA.

Well PTY is a political route (one of the not too many these days) for CA after all so you can imagine how good the performance is.

About a month ago I was in a stop in PTY connecting between two flights, and the CA flight from PEK-IAH happened to arrive. I stood near the gate to see what went on. I swear no more tan 50 people disembarked the plane, and no more than 30 pieces of luggaged were unloaded. I was shocked.

Adding on the IAH-PTY has also negatively affected the performance of PEK-IAH. In order to make the extra tag on, PEK-IAH leaves Beijing at 7:40 AM, which is well before most domestic flights arrive from across China. CA 995 still operates 3 times/week, however, and that leaves at 3:00 PM to allow for connections. Those flights are always packed.

Yea that route is all about political influence in Latin America.

China controls Panama's largest port and the Panama Canal is of strategic importance to China's trade fleet.

The wife and I took it for a long weekend in Panama back in September. Going down it seemed like a 40% load, the return was about 75%. Its a purely political route.

But what about cargo? The 77W used on the route has lots of cargo space.

They might work if they have fifth right for cargo as well. Don’t think there are a lot of cargo capacity PTY-IAH excluding this. IAH-PEK may be too long to be fully loaded.
But whatever. CA, as the flag carrier, will have to do something not so profitable to follow the political needs. Ask their load factor for PEK-MSQ.

PEK-IAH-PTY may well count among the most prominent political routes run by CA on par with PEK-JNB (recently switched to PEK-SZX-JNB), PEK-YUL-HAV

Surely such routes might not have existed at all in the first place from a purely commercial perspective but for being profusely political. No wonder "flag carrier" CA is reported to have taken governmental subsidies for running such service (the exact subsidy numbers and operational terms are anybody's guess)

On a related note, there's a telling chart showing pax numbers and load factors on 50 mainland China-US routes during Jan-June 2018 (done by 中国商飞C919 @bbs.feeyo.com based on data from US DOT)
Image

Showing the route btwn PEK and IAH wasn't doing too bad in both metrics, yet the return leg IAH-PEK was doing consistently better than PEK-IAH

Also CA does enjoy 5th freedom on IAH-PTY (See: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1388389)

What exactly is meant by a "political route"?

A route aimed at politicians, related business travelers, and a trophy route to show China’s “commitment” to Panama.

Is the route codeshared by UA? What days does it operate?

Even simpler than that, a political route is one that isn't driven by profitability.

And for the PEK-JNB route recently being switched to PEK-SZX-JNB, for some reason CA doesn't even have South Africa on its website in the list of countries! Same for Panama/Belarus/Cuba even though they fly there. They should add all the countries they fly to or they should add a "Other Countries - English" option to their website.

As for the 2x weekly PEK-IAH-PTY, they should move the PEK departure from 740am to 10am to allow for greater China/Asia connections.

It was a great trip. The 777 was very clean and neat. Service was good, but robotic. Definitely a better option service wise than a United 737-900. Crew was friendly and meals were ok... not exceptional. Would definitely take this option as long as its flown.
