UA announces seasonal LAX/SFO-RAP, expands EWR-RAP

Mon Jan 28, 2019 10:37 pm

Saturday and Sunday E175 service this summer (June 22 - September 1). EWR was announced last year and flew Saturday only, this year it’ll fly Sunday as well.

Well that sure is unexpected. At such low frequency, these routes should probably perform well.

Exciting news for RAP! Also comes with an upgauge of one of the daily RAP-ORD turns from CR7/CRJ to 73G from June - Oct.

UA 1505 RAP-ORD 1040 - 1203
UA 1810 ORD-RAP 1325 - 1644

This is the first UA mainline service for western SD since the ex-TED A320s were on ORD-RAP maybe a decade ago.

Are these going to be same-plane turns? 36 and 37 minutes seems a bit aggressive...

You either got the airport codes backwards or the flight times mixed up, but thanks for sharing the information. I may take this flight this summer in my quest to hit all 50 states by the time I'm 40 (in September.)

What a gain for RAP. Wouldn't have imagined they would see summer flights to LAX, SFO, and EWR. Great for those going to the Black Hills!

Other than the Black Hills and Mt.Rushmore what makes the Rapid City area such an attraction that flights to LAX, SFO and EWR are being started? I visited Rapid City and Mt. Rushmore a few years and really there is not much there.

There are two nearby national parks (Badlands and Wind Cave) as well as Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore, the Crazyhorse monument, and some wild west tourist towns like Deadwood. But the real reason tourists visit is to go to Wall Drug :duck:

I think ~35 mins is pretty standard for an E175 turn.

Eh. Good luck RAP, but this all seems a bit much for that market.

Once a week seems quite normal. Opens up a vacation spot a lot of people have never been to due to vimited air service to RAP and other small airports. One can easily fit in a week seeing all the above attractions. I spent 12 hours alone at Devil's Tower. Aliens never showed up though. :expressionless:

I don't believe that's true. I recall that UA has flown mainline on DEN-RAP seasonally more recently than that.

It's an airport that sees over 100K enplanements in the three months June/July/August. I don't think five more E75s a week will overwhelm it.

:checkmark: Yep, 35 minutes is standard for UA. AA does some 30 minute turns with 76-seaters.

You would think that, however I happen to be in Rapid City years ago when Sturgis was happening and quite a few people said they shipped their bikes in a flew from their homes that were far away. Obviously most will ride in but you would probably be surprised at how many do fly or come in by other means.

that sorta defeats the purpose of owning an expensive motorcycle. I also dont think commercial airlines ship motorcycles, but I might be wrong.

I don't think anyone said people check their motorcycles as baggage or ship via plane. That was your interpretation. Most get trailered. I have come across several Europeans who shipped via Air Cargo.

AA may "schedule" some 30-minute turns with 76-seaters, but as someone who lives at an outstation (BNA), they rarely "do" those turns in the time allocated.

36 or 37 minutes is obviously not an outrageous amount of time, but in my experience (though not at RAP in particular), it's not always realistic either.

I sure wish KICT would get a sfo ns lax didn’t work out because delta came in and flooded the market but I think sfo would work. AS is doing well with Sea

A person wealthy enough to ship a Harley cross-country is probably also likely to avoid sitting on a UA E175 for several hours.

Why do you say that? It's an extremely comfortable aircraft and you think they would prefer to connect somewhere? Almost all flights into RAP are on RJs anyway.
