Kalitta Flt 720 (B727-200) nosegear collapse on landing at TCL

Tue Jan 29, 2019 3:38 am

Local Birmingham, Alabama media reporting that Kalitta Flight 720 experienced a nose gear failure on landing at Tuscaloosa, AL (TCL) tonight (January 28). Thankfully airport officials report no injuries to the crew. ARRTF applied foam under the nose of the aircraft; forward lower deck cargo doors open too - presumably to check for fire.

ABC 33/40 reporter Elizabeth Lane has a photo of the Boeing 727-200 sitting on the runway with the L1 door open and a ladder in place: https://twitter.com/elizabethlanetv/sta ... 4233194496

Tuscaloosa mayor Walt Maddox has additional close-up photos: https://twitter.com/WaltMaddox/status/1 ... 6819266560

Recovery will be challenging if not completed in next seven hours as snow and roadway icing conditions are expected early Tuesday morning.

It shouldn't be.
A nose gear up landing is a bummer, but often times some sheet metal skill is all that is required to return to service.
But sometimes, if there's significant structural damage, then.... it's curtains.

28 years after Eastern's demise, there always seems to be a -225 flying around out there.
This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.

Is this a "nosegear collapse on landing", or is it a nosegear-up landing? Two very different things.

(Or is it a "crash" like the nitwit local TV reporter tweeted? When challenged, she used the classic "that's what 'officials' said it was" dodge. Crediting the characterizations and views of "Official" sources as if they are gospel is the bane of accurate journalism. (It's really just cover to use the word you want to use. "What time did the crash happen, Mr. Mayor?" "I think it crashed around 11pm." Official Confirms Plane Crashed at Tuscaloosa.)

Odd route -- LRD to TCL ... wonder what they were hauling.

My guess would be car parts. But that is a wild a** guess.
Riddle: Which lasts longer, a start-up airline or a start-up football league?

It was either parts or a positioning flight. LRD and TCL are two frequent auto parts hauling locations (along with QRO, YIP/PTK, YXU/YHM/YKF, GSP)

It could just be a positioning flight as part of a bigger picture.
I'm seeing a regular schedule as follows;
Tuscaloosa (TCL) - Queretaro (QRO)
Queretaro (QRO) - Laredo (LRD)
Laredo (LRD) - Tuscaloosa (TCL)

Your guess is as good as mine as to whether all three legs are fully loaded or otherwise.
Just as long as it's wine heading in one direction, and illegal immigrants in the other, I'm good.

There is also a reverse schedule, flying anti-clockwise.
Nothing to see here; move along please.

LRD is for customs, TCL is for Mercedes-Benz. TCL-QRO is probably empty.

I don't understand why you'd want to inflict Alabama wine on anyone.

These auto parts flights are great for the old birds. Aeronaves bought the old Evergreen DC-9-15s that were sitting out in the desert for forever and revived them. They also fly the last Dart-engined CV-640s (though not much recently), and of course it's always fun to see the various E120 and SW3s logging 4+ hour flights. The introduction of the MD-80Fs on some of these routs is boring.

All correct.

I'd imagine they might fix it or it could get a bullet. Either way I'm sure it will stiff leg to to Oscoda sooner or later.

Aww man. I am sure it will moved, but that is a bad time for that. I have flown into TCL many times on Alabama Gamedays and their are so many jets and ga planes there they close off a runway for parking. And that is just on a normal game day. This Saturday it is the biggest regular season game of the year. Heard yesterday President Trump is now coming and that will make everything else all the more crazy.

I didn't envy the people at TCL before this situation, and I certainly don't envy them now. They always do an amazing job. It really is something to see when a "small town airport" turns into a private jet capital. Watching Tuscaloosa, AL, College Station, TX, State College, PA, and Oxford, MS turn into these massive operations for one day is an impressive sight.

It is gone btw. Stiff leg ferry and it got the bullet I heard up in Oscoda.

Per AV Herald, NTSB prelim report indicates that the captain chose to continue the landing despite the nosegear position light, horn, and two crewmates recommending a go-around. Then the captain subsequently described a series of events to investigators that were in contrast to the other crewmembers' recollections:
