SBA new service announcement 1/31/19

Thu Jan 31, 2019 1:26 am

Santa Barbara Airport's Facebook page has the following message that was just posted:

"We are excited to announce ANOTHER nonstop flight from @SBAirport to a very requested destination in California! Tomorrow, January 31 at the airline terminal at 4:30pm. Where do you think it might be?!!! #travel #FlySBA"

--> My guess is that it is SMF as the route did very well in the past. Contour Airlines? Any guesses?

Probably SAN. If not, either SMF or SJC.

SAN?

After all, AS does do SAN-MRY.

SBA is slowly building up a nice array of destinations. When was SLC announced?

I'm guessing AS to SJC or SAN, SMF possibly. Contour could also be the announcement...but probably to one of those destinations as well.

Wish UA would add ORD or IAH instead though.

I don't think think AS will be announcing anything. They're in a "slow growth mode" at the moment, and WN isn't very realistic either.

Also the announcement is at 4:30 PM, and AS always does their new route announcements in the very early morning.

It'll probably be a smaller airline like Contour or Cal Pacific.

I think it'll be Contour. CA Pacific is all but deceased. AS is slowing growth, but I wouldn't rule them out completely yet...at least until tomorrow.

I'd be happier with that! I just feel they'd go for the more unserved market. SBA already has Bay Area service on UA and Contour. Lower hanging fruit would seem to be SAN with no competition.

I'm still sticking to my original guess of SMF utilizing Contour Airlines. The announcement mentions a highly requested California city. ExpressJet stopped flying this route in 2008 once they ceased all operations. SMF has been heavily requested by locals since the service stopped as the flights were very full. If it's not SMF, I do agree that the only other possibilities are SJC & SAN.

I think that's just an advertisement that's been there for awhile. According to their press release, these routes were announced on August 27, 2018: https://www.contourairlines.com/en/press

I'd be very happy if it were AAG to SAN but you're right, FA9'. They do make announcements of new routes on Thursdays now but the late afternoon timing is NOT AAG's thing.

I've been hoping for SAN-SBA for a few years now but AS/QX/OO seems like the only logical choice; I will be very surprised if it's anyone else like Allegiant or ???.

I don't think LAS is ending. SMF is in addition to LAS. According to Contour's website, it appears that LAS will become a daily flight also beginning April 16th. It is currently 4x weekly.

I flew on Contour a few weeks ago. There's zero in-flight entertainment so I'm not sure if they have future plans. I will say that the seats are far more spacious compared to a CR2, CR7 & CR9.

Contour does seem to do well operationally out West, per my own observation. LF has been serving CEC-OAK since last April, on AEAS subsidy, and have been doing very well with the one daily round-trip. It runs CEC-OAK-SBA daily, tagging SBA-LAS-PGA 4x weekly. I've heard good comments on their in-flight service. CEC airport authority reports they run about an 80% load factor. Evidently it is doing well enough that a second CEC trip is being added 4x weekly as part of that SBA expansion. (Good use of the new terminal at CEC, which opens next month.)

They operate the E-135 with only 30 seats for premium comfort.

CEC is on a point sticking out into the ocean --you land over the rocks and waves-- so seasonal fog is an issue. While SFO can be bogged down (which I see affecting SFO-ACV/MFR on a regular basis), LF is almost always right on time with OAK. However I don't think they've cancelled a CEC departure yet, though a few inbounds have gone to MFR, or (once?) ACV, or returned to OAK. They go to MFR if they can arrange a bus to bring the passengers over the hill that same night, ferrying the plane to CEC for the morning departure. If a MFR bus in unavailable, then they go back to OAK if CEC is below minimums after departure, or hold in OAK for the night and fly up in the morning.

Clearly they honor the subsidy commitment; they've had the plane go tech a couple of times in SBA, and have either brought another plane in (usually from PGA) to complete the SBA-OAK-CEC legs, or once ferried PGA-OAK non-stop to pick-up the northbound to CEC trip.

It wouldn't surprise me if LF adds SJC in the not-too-distant future. They are turning out to be the new Wings West Airlines of the 21st century.

Sounds more like Apollo Airways, not Wings West which was up the road in San Luis Obispo. Nice win for SBA but is it sustainable at 30 seats? Don’t think so.

Back in the day, we filled all 18 Apollo Airways seats 3 times a day, SMF-SBA. Now, 40 (egad!) years of population and business growth later, LF should be able to do well with 30 seats at least once daily. OO was flying EMB-120s and doing fairly well after that but I think the QX Q400 more recently was too much airplane.

FWIW, the Apollo HP-Jetstream flights took 90 minutes, and had no lavatory. Especially when we still had a flight attendant pouring soft drinks and wine, a few passengers couldn't hold out. (It was two + hours in the Navajo/Seneca/Baron flights when the Jetstreams were OTS.) This LF service is going to be way better (though I don't believe they serve alcohol.)

Good catch! Didn't Apollo Airways turn into Pacific Coast Airlines?

If LF can make OAK-SBA work (which was a weaker market than SMF for SBA), then why can't SMF-SBA work? I think they will do well on that route.

LF doubled down on both OAK-CEC & OAK-SBA with this announcement which was shining most brightly on SBA. Pretty good stuff for OAK, too. Awesome to see LF being successful there. Could be more in store if this new capacity is absorbed quickly.

Yes, Apollo did morph into Pacific Coast, having been acquired by a larger company with a few other carriers in it's portfolio. All unsuccessful, to my limited knowledge.

As to LF; the CEC-OAK trip just sat at OAK all day, until the early evening return. So it made sense to do something with it. I have no idea how SBA got the nod, but it seems to be working out.

Now I wish they would connect more dots...such as my wishlist item: CEC-SMF. ACV needs a SMF connection too. UAx/OO used to operate a CEC-ACV-SMF junket.
