First KLM A 330 in New livery

Thu Jan 31, 2019 7:35 pm

Today KLM first A 330 came out of the paintshop sporting the new livery. It's been a long wait but I must admit it looks good on the Bus.

Very nice thanks! A330's look great in almost any scheme but I've never been a huge fan of the wavy KLM livery, preferred the elegance of the previous one.

At least it's more blue in the sky opposed to euro White so I'm a happy camper.

It's not offensive but at the same time it's very middle-of-the-road - bordering on cheap. The most interesting thing about it, IMO, is how much better it looks on some aircraft types than others and how much better it looks from certain angles!

Agreed. Designed for the E190 but, in my opinion, looks best on the 737.

In a weird way the A330 with wavy line looks like a A320 from a weird angle in the wavy livery.

Btw, it was designed for the 787 wasn't it?

Seeing the 787 wave on Airbus jets seems kind of blasphemous.

But don't you agree it's a matter of taste, which differs quite a bit between people? Has there ever been a single airline which has not changed its livery every so often? I have liked all the KLM liveries that I have seen, and this is an attempt at a more contemporary look. I really like it.

Why is the swoop like halfway down the fuselage? Oh well, still gives it a modern look. IMO one of the best refreshed brandings of the last few years.

I feel like (and maybe its just me) that the NEW "wavey" KLM livery on that A330 ALMOST makes the aircraft itself look a bit smaller in general, while for some reason making the engine size look larger... (Compared to the Original livery where the complete opposite is true)

This livery in KLM colors is perfect for aircraft with a dropped nose like the embraer and the 787.
On those it fits the lines of the front of the aircraft.

On all other aircraft the line should also end in the nose tip like the old liveries all did.

If they kept both styles for different aircraft it would be perfect.

Anyway the KLM livery is beautiful.
The specific KLM-blue color is really beautiful.

Escpecially during full cloud, snow conditions like this week, the blue is even more striking surrounded by a full white cloud covered sky. The blue pops out almost like its shining.

Whoever came up with the half blue livery years ago is a genius.

Same here.
Did KLM change the blue intensity for a darker one or it's just my eyes?

Looks like a very nicely done and much needed revamp of their 332! Too bad some of these have 18J and one of the worst hard products on TATL. They should learn a thing or two from DL...

I agree. Small update and it keeps an amazing livery current and fresh.

The optic play of the standard cheat lines may have made sense on the DC6 and at the dawn of the jet age, but it's not necessary anymore. Does anyone have one on their car anymore?

It's hard to tell. It looks like a little darker blue, but that may just be the light/photos. Without seeing both in the same photo under the same conditions, I can't really say if it is different.

ikolkyo wrote:

I'm not sure you can call it a "new" livery. Looks like all they did was have the cheat line curve down below the nose rather than keep it a straight line. Not much of a change.

I know many will not agree, but I wish KLM would adopt the special Olympic livery with the oranje front as their main livery. I thought that it looked awesome.

Not to my knowledge. They're all 2-2-2 and technically flat beds, but in my experience do not feel like true flat beds.

Agreed. Designed for the E190 but, in my opinion, looks best on the 737.

Both if I remember correctly. The concept behind it was improving the appearance of "low-nosed aircraft", which both of them are. Originally it was KLM's intention for the livery to be applied only to the 787 and E190 fleets, but then they decided to roll it out on other aircraft types too. It looks good on the 787 and looked brilliant on the Fokker. 747 and A330, not so much.

They are, as of December last year, revamped with new full-flat seats in business and new economy class seats. See this link for more info and pictures: https://www.upinthesky.nl/2018/12/06/klm-bouwt-laatste-a330-300-om/

Yes, apparently the old livery would look odd on the 787 and A350. The E-jets already had been flying for years in the old livery, but the new (or updated I should say) livery of course was also applied to the E-jets with the similar lower nose.
I must say it looks better on the A330 than I expected. I now wonder why KLM hesitated. I suspect we'll see it on the 77E's too now.
Personally I think the updated livery look OK on the 737 and 777. On the 747 it looks strange. Looks like it has hydrocephalus. A Vietnam Airlines like styling would have been better.

You mean the current livery that's getting replaced with the wavy livery?

That would be (the end of) 2002; 747-400 PH-BFI was the very first KLM aircraft to wear the new livery:

The livery before that was indeed from 1972 which was completely different than the previous one.
(old on the left, new livery from 1972 on the right)

Coincidentally; at the moment one of the KLM 747 freighters (PH-CKB) is in Jakarta for a D-check and it also got the new dolphin livery; however it has been slightly tweaked:

It almost looks photoshoped and if it's real then I don't understand why they tweaked it. It's to bold and lumpy and is it black or dark blue on the tail, the word cargo that is.

Looks like a very nicely done and much needed revamp of their 332! Too bad some of these have 18J and one of the worst hard products on TATL. They should learn a thing or two from DL...

I thought all KLM 330s were 1-2-1 lie flat now. No?

Not to my knowledge. They're all 2-2-2 and technically flat beds, but in my experience do not feel like true flat beds.

Ah, I stand corrected. Still, these are not anywhere near the worst products doing TATL. AF is significantly worse, as are AA's 767s and a multitude of others.

I like it! A livery that's still a livery, and not another all-white plane with a name on the fuselage and a logo on the tail.

I know many will not agree, but I wish KLM would adopt the special Olympic livery with the oranje front as their main livery. I thought that it looked awesome.

No. For me it's great for a single special livery, but too shocking a contrast in colors for the whole fleet.
