FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Thanks enilria!

Interesting to see AA bring MIA-SFO down to 2x from 4x. Perhaps an opportunity for B6 to add a third Mint frequency from FLL to backfill some of the capacity.

B6 is finally adding a second frequency on BOS-AUS. This is way overdue. Also nice to see a third BOS-CHS frequency added. Notably both markets are served by DL.

WN chopping BOS-ATL to 1x -why even bother any more? This market is a blood bath.

I figured last week’s numbers on ANU-MIA had to be an error. Good to see it fixed this week.

The "0.1" on these routes come up as extra Sunday flights. Its pretty much a late pm depature in both directions. I guess they just to squeeze a bit more out of these 4 737's that day.

Has there been a concerted effort to attract commercial service to TRM? I would think that PSP could handle all of the demand in the Coachella Valley. TRM would be convenient for certain spots, like Coachella, La Quinta and maybe Indian Wells, but any further west and PSP is a closer option with quite a bit of service. And there's really nothing to the east and south.

Great to see WN bringing up ABQ-AUS and SJC to a daily flight each. They've been operating on only one or two days per week for some time.

Looks like mainline will only operate for about a month this Spring and then they will go to 2x CR9 afterwards and both will be morning departures, which offer more connecting opportunities over the current afternoon departure. If only they'd put an E75 on the route similar to SBP-DFW.

SBA will be very busy in the mornings with LF and AA both adding an additional overnight aircraft to the 4 UA, 1 AA that already overnight and DL adding one in August.

Spot checking AA.com. Seems like that is the case for May. I don't see a nonstop on most days.

I believe this service is just operational in April for the Coachella Music Festival. You know, flying all the "stars" out from LA Area and also the Bay area. Thermal does have Advanced Air regular service to Hawthorne, I believe.

To enilria, Riverside ,(the city) is at the far western end of Riverside County which is quite long in geographical area. They have their own municipal airport .

Is it not in Riverside?

Riverside County is over 7,000 sq miles, larger than Rhode Island and Connecticut combined.

The city of Riverside is on the northwestern corner of the county. TRM is over 80 miles east of the city of Riverside.

Looks like as far as PHX is concerned, there are a handful of mainline AA cuts, a handful of regional AA adds, and a handful of WN adds.

BA is shifting more capacity to MIA and PHL to connect people to MCO, JFK MCO is a route that's dominated by B6 and DL... I believe aa wants to make this seasonal

Those will only operate in April for the Coachella Music Festival.

DALLAS, Jan. 23, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- JetSuiteX, the acclaimed air carrier that offers scheduled flights from private terminals for the cost of a commercial ticket, has announced that tickets are now on sale for seasonal flights to Coachella Valley in April. Following the success of last year's service from Burbank (BUR) to Thermal, only 15 minutes from the Valley, JetSuiteX has added flight capacity from Burbank and introduced flights from two new markets – Oakland (OAK) and Orange County (SNA). Ticket prices start at $69 each way.

JFK MCO is not a seasonal route.

It is one of the busiest routes in the nation.

AA is really toast to the NYC traveller of their own doing. Bizzare

Those will only operate in April for the Coachella Music Festival.

Not saying it is, I have a feeling AA will fly it seasonal, cmon go look at the fares yourself, let B6 and DL slaughter themselves over getting the families to Disney, and that's only for the month of May which is not a very busy month for air travel... do you know how many people every day end up booking connections on DL and AA through ATL/CLT to do the same route

I don't know about this year. But last year, JetSuiteX partnered with Boots on Stage. Passengers received free passes to a private pre-party plus swag gifts on the flight.

I’ve noticed a lot of AA reductions at ORD. Is this possibly to due to upgauging or what do y’all think?

Cutting JFK-MCO won't cause them to lose any NYC based flyers. Once they start cutting things like JFK-SEA/SAN/YYZ/e.t.c, they will be in trouble

The majority of families fly to MCO once or twice, and it isn't a high yielding destination like some of the Caribbean destinations are, so it isn't that important that AA serve that route.

I'd be willing to wager JFK-MCO had a large portion of the passengers on mileage tickets, which is not profitable.

What’s LGA-MCO at? I bet 2x or 3x a day in peak.

No way JFK can compete. Connect traffic will have their lunch eaten with all of the new non stop service from Europe.

I would bet JFK becomes an INTL only operation with feed to high value and or perimeter void routes. I.e. LAX SFO SEA.

This is a surprise. Up to six weekly in the low season, with DL also joining the AMS fray year-round. The six-way battle on TPA-Europe continues... surely someone blinks. DY would be my bet, but UK-Florida is something of a bottomless pit.

Agree not sure you can sugar coat that at all. NYC for AA is plain and simple like UA at LAX a mess of there own doing.

DY's pax numbers looked pretty good for TPA' December numbers.

I think after AMS it will stabilize for a bit and TPA has already said it's not looking to add to Europe. WK has gone to 1x sometimes 2x weekly and Icelandair is back down to I think 2x now?

It's still showing as 2x daily in June and on, so not sure if it's just a shoulder season cut or what...

There are a few routes that show up differently in this thread than what's actually loaded. Examples:
MIA-SFO - shows 2x daily here, looks like 3x daily on aa.com
ORD-ATL - shows 4x daily here, looks like 5x daily on aa.com

And regarding the AA frequency cuts at places like ORD, it does appear that some are related to upgauging. For example, ORD-ATL is now up to 1x daily E75 and 4x daily 738. Until relatively recently it had at most 1-2 daily mainline.
This is my signature until I think of a better one.

The Thermal airport is not in Palm Springs. It's in the same region, which is often collectively called the Coachella Valley. Palm Springs and Thermal are about 35 minutes from each other on I-10.

For reference, let's zoom out to show all of Riverside County. As you can see, it stretched from the LA region all the way to the Arizona border. Riverside to Thermal is about a 90 minute drive (in no traffic).

Well spotted, I flew this route for the first time this week, was a full flight but I booked it only hours before departure for only $220. There is over 40 daily flights from NYC to MCO, way too much competition to make money.

October and November are actually two busy months for the Lufthansa flight at TPA and European traffic overall. Filling 6x weekly at TPA shouldn’t be an issue for them except during January and February.

Yep, good time for B6 to up their frequency on FLL-SFO. But they might not have the airframe for this until next year. I don't know if you noticed, but they added to a few markets out of BOS in May to mid june, too away extra frequency in peak summer period and then added them back for September. I think they are just really short on planes.

Also WN is down to once daily on CUN-FLL and twice daily on JAX-FLL. Here is my prediction, those those won't be around next summer.

My god if they are! They are in serious trouble in NYC. Totally irrelevant

Not saying it is, I have a feeling AA will fly it seasonal, cmon go look at the fares yourself, let B6 and DL slaughter themselves over getting the families to Disney, and that's only for the month of May which is not a very busy month for air travel... do you know how many people every day end up booking connections on DL and AA through ATL/CLT to do the same route

jfklganyc wrote:

AA is really toast to the NYC traveller of their own doing. Bizzare

I guarantee you JFK-SEA/SAN/YYZ are not profitable either.

Thanks enilria. I believe TRM stuff is for Coachella.

OAK-SNA is up to 3 daily for twice daily in Feb. Jetsuitex is building up some nice frequency at OAK and SNA against WN.

It's pretty remarkable from where I sit how much trouble WN is having at FLL because NK and B6 networks rely on local O/D AND POS abroad. WN seems to hope connections can offset the POS abroad but it hasn't happened. In general WN's international strategy seems to be coming apart as the recent axing of MEX shows us. Hopefully they turn it around. WN is basically a hybrid LCC/network carrier these days and it is good for overall competition if they can offer more than just domestic flights.

Re AA dropping JFK-MCO - I think this is just emblematic of AA’s continuing decline in NYC. UA and DL are stronger than they have ever been, and B6 is holding its own. AA has decided that it’s just not worth it with the limited resources that they have.

That said JFK-MCO is actually a decently yielding market with limitless demand, so this drop is somewhat surprising.

On a personal note...I remember flying this on a TWA 717 right before 9/11, in the last days of the old T5 and right around the time AA put TWA out of its misery. Surreal to think how the market has evolved.

They noted on the conference call that all new 321 deliveries this year will be in the Core configuration, which is disappointing. I feel like a third FLL-SFO and fourth FLL-LAX Mint frequency are low hanging fruit with a direct benefit to the bottom line. (I think there’s an argument for even more Mint flights from BOS and JFK too.)

The delay in the 321neos is really an inconvenience they don’t need right now in an already-strained operation. I’d like to see them completely eliminate LGB and redeploy those planes to build in additional spare capacity time and to add (permanent) frequency to markets like BOS-BNA/HOU/DFW/PHX. Seeing the additional CHS and especially AUS flights is encouraging though. (And the retiming of the BUR flight I think helps their overall BOS-LA position.)
SEA/SAN do well, and not sure about YYZ they have had the same amount of frequencies there for a few years
I doubt AA makes any money from JFK to SEA/SAN. I believe their RASM is lower than B6/DL (and far lower than UA from EWR). Fuel prices have moderated though, so that makes these markets somewhat more viable.

Based on what I have read in numerous articles and discussion sites, WN hasn’t invested in the ground resources necessary to make certain international markets work (primarily those that rely on VFR or foreign POS demand, such as MEX). But I think this goes beyond that. WN can’t even make FLL-NYC work.

That said, B6 has its own weakness at FLL - primarily those markets where it competes with both NK/WN and doesn’t have strong POS on the other end (I.e. DTW, BWI, which have been dropped). I also wouldn’t be surprised to see B6 drop a market like FLL-MSY, which I believe competes with both, is full of low yielding leisure demand, and offers little relevance to its primary FLL-based target market.

True, but it's super-odd to drop a big route like that for a month. I wonder what will absorb the slots for a month? Or maybe they will extend this?

Yeah, that's pretty cool. Don't they need TSA for a scheduled flight on an aircraft over 10 seats? I didn't look, but I assume this is an RJ.

I've predicted this before, but I predict a transaction where NK/WN/B6 becomes a two carrier situation in FLL. One of those guys will sell their gates to another. Hard to say which. I would assume B6 is the least likely to sell, with NK and WN most likely. It should be WN selling to B6, but they are stubborn in the face of what is probably poor performance. NK probably does really well, but I think pretty much anything there is for sale at the right price. I don't think B6 can afford to reduce their network footprint any further by exiting. I could imagine NK pocketing eighty or a hundred million and moving everything to MCO.

I find Floridians are the least snobbish about NK and from what I have seen, NK actually has the most "loyalty" in the FLL point of sale which is surprising because NK and loyalty do not usually go together. Of course the market is mostly inbound, so being king of FLL residents is not enough to have a lock on the market.

On another note, how smart would NK have been to lock down FLL 10 years ago before everybody else started making inroads? That was probably Indigo's only big mistake with NK.

AA's SEA/SAN-JFK do well do to strong business markets on both sides of each route.

An interesting plot twist would be for AA to add SEA-SAN (and SAN-SEA) so they could run some triangle routes with the 737-800 like JFK-SEA-SAN-JFK or JFK-SAN-SEA-JFK... With that being said though, they already do use AS for routes up and down the west-coast... ;)
