MKE (small) airport name change

Tue Feb 05, 2019 6:23 am

Apparently, this is just a small change, but airport officials hoping it increases the airport's traffic:
General Mitchell International Airport to become Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport

Do you think this will make any difference in airport traffic?

What a terrible name change. It's almost as bad as the Miller Park fiasco. A few years ago I remember it was even suggested that "Chicago" be included in MKE's official name.
Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

Not gonna make any difference in traffic, but I don't have a problem with the change. Military titles for civilian facilities just isn't "modern", whereas the city it serves is.
(btw, this isn't disrepectful to the namesake - people know "Billy Mitchell", not "General Mitchell")

This is a big nothingburger story which (apparently) got legs on a slow news day.

It does make some sense to put Milwaukee into the airport name for clarity sake, but as a controversy it will blow over and be forgotten soon enough.

There actually is a way in which the name change could make a small difference. Some sites just say the airport code and airport name -- not the city. Kayak for example -- headed to LA and choose Include Nearby Airports? You don't get Burbank, you get BUR Bob Hope. Now if you're familiar with LA airports you might see BUR and know it means Burbank. But not everybody knows, and lots of people have weak geographical knowledge. But the name Burbank might ring a bell, and the internet may tell them Burbank is actually closer to their destination. It's the same thing with General Mitchell versus Milwaukee Mitchell. Flying to the Chicago area you may not know what General Mitchell is, but you have heard of Milwaukee. Will a lot of people end up choosing Milwaukee because now it says Milwaukee Mitchell? Nope, but more than zero will.

There are other places online which give the airport code and name but no city. Go to FlightAware and you won't find Milwaukee, you'll (still) find MKE General Mitchell. When they update to the new name things will be a notch clearer for novices.

Still, not really a newsworthy story. But a good change.

Just to clarify not because of the name itself but because every now and then instead of an online flight shopper thinking (as they decide which O'Hare flight to pick) "what's General Mitchell" they may instead think "oh yeah, Milwaukee's not too far" and consider it.

Isn't that the truth...although they are slipping a bit if they are failing to properly refer to it as Billy Mitchel Field. It's just that kind of slackness that leads people into saying 108th Street instead of the proper Highway Uh-Hunnurd.
