Largest Movement at MDW

Tue Feb 05, 2019 12:36 pm

Reading through 15, 17 year-old threads here it seems like there was quite a debate back in the day as to whether or not ATA (TZ) ever flew the L1011 into MDW. Some in those threads insisted that they saw TZ L1011 at a MDW gate, one even claimed to have seen a USAF C-5 Galaxy land there. Apparently, in addition, Airbus sent the A300 to MDW on a promo tour. Having read through all of the threads, there was never any real "final answer" as to whether or not a heavy landed there. Of course, that's with today's definition, as 15-17 years ago, the 757 was considered "heavy" for separation purposes.

As I see it, it would appear that widebody operations at MDW are limited not only by weight (13C/31C has a 250k limit for double tandem gear, forget about any other runways), but are also limited by ramp space and wingspan, similar to the situation at DCA (where airlines like Delta, for example, have flown the 767 into DCA, but as the aircraft taxied about, it created congestion due to its wingspan). At DCA, in contrast, the runways there have a 360k limit, which allowed for regular widebody operation (B767).

In my opinion, I highly doubt that the L1011 ever landed at MDW.
People are saying. Believe me.

While it’s not a widebody, the 753 certainly saw scheduled service to MDW on both NW and TZ. There weren’t many suitable gates but it was not particularly problematic on the airfield.

Jet 24 was a 707 charter operation that frequented MDW in the late 70’s. There has been a C-5 at MDW before. United has chartered DC-8’s at MDW as well.

I'm quite sure there was a single operation of an A300 before it went into service with intent on proving it could be flown in/out of MDW.

FedEx briefly flew A300 into MDW before they consolidated everything at a mega facility in ORD in the late 90's.

They did on and off for a few years in the mid-00s, usually to MSP but maybe also sometimes to DTW. MKE and IND saw similar on and off 753 service in that time period. I flew a 753 at least once on MSP-MKE around 2006.

NW did indeed operate the 757-300 into MDW several times a day in retaliation for WN starting MDW-MSP service.

I was on an ATA L-1011 from MDW - LAS. I was a kid at the time but it was a very memorable flight because ceiling panels and movie screen came down during takeoff (before camera phones). They were swinging side to side. Then a maintenance person came from the back of the plane and put it back together. We were in a bulk head and the FAs facing us said they had over a 100 write ups on this plane. Only flight on an L-1011 and last on ATA.

I looked at my mother and said...."Well he knows more about this then we do, he would not risk his life for a pay check." It was shortly after they received the aircraft, the exit signs were still in English and Arabic. Not something you normally see flying domestically in the US.

NW flew both 752s and 753s into MDW from MSP for a while. ATA regualarly flew the 753 also when they had their largest hub at MDW. I flew it many times myself. Always amazing how it managed to only use 3000ft of runway for takeoff when heavily loaded.

The AB3 was a demonstration flight by Eastern Airlines, when they were touring this new aircraft around the country. If you google around a bit, there is a picture taken on board it departing from 31C (31L at the time).

UA had a DC8 fly in at one point as well.

I saw a Delta 752 a few weeks ago at MDW for a charter flight (presumably for the military) going to IAD.

Not the heaviest but one of the biggest, the Navy demonstrated the R6V and its 189’ wingspan at MDW. A Shorts Belfast made an appearance at some point as well. I can’t find a photo of a C-5 but there are several floating around of the C-141.

United brought the DC-8-61 in during their open house events.

This was long before WN service to MSP. It could well have been a reaction to TZ, though, who dropped a ton of capacity into the market.

You'll see DL 752s at MDW regularly because of the NBA charter contracts (all but three teams - Dallas, Houston and Miami - charter on DL 752s) and a smattering of NHL teams using DL in part because of MDW's proximity to the United Center compared to ORD. I'd suspect MLB teams will also charter in and out of MDW when they're playing the White Sox at Comiskey Field (or whatever it's called these days), though they'll likely fly out of ORD after a series with the Cubs. IIRC, they usually stage the chartered 752s over at C Terminal at MDW.
2019: DAL, MCI, PHX, LAS, DFW, SAT, ORD, SLC, SEA, DTW; B73G (WN x3), B738 (WN, AA, DL), A20N (NK), MD83 (AA), B788 (AA x2), CS1 (DL), 739 (DL), 712 (DL)
Next: AA: DFW-PHL (752), PHL-MIA (763), MIA-LAX (77W), LAX-DFW (789)

It is now simply because they aren't scheduled there. DL mainline is entirely B712's and A319's (currently only B712's).

The largest aircraft I saw land and takeoff at MDW was a ATA 707 in the early 80’s. The 707 landed and departed on runway 22L. The 707 held the breaks ran the jet engines up then filled the corner of 55th st and Cicero smoke and dust. It pulled off the runway going over the buildings at 63rd and Central I’m guessing 500 to 700 feet. It was a site.

C-130
C-141
DC-8-61

I'm not claiming these aircrafet were never at MDW, I just haven't been able to find any photos of them there. If anyone has photos, please post:

C-5 Galaxy
DC-10 (UA tour or wx diversion?)

When they first brought them in, I thought it was going to be something to see. However, they have so much thrust on the engines, many would just take off and climb out steeply with little to note.

The older 727's and DC9/MD80's were a lot more fun to watch.

I don't think this was an L10. TZ never operated the L10 from MDW, and our L10s didn't have the flip down IFE, rather it had the bulkhead screens and projectors . Sounds like it was a 757. All of TZ's L10 operations in Chicago (all charter) took place at ORD.

I find this thread curious, because had you asked me a few days ago about the L1011 and MDW, I would have told you with great assurance that I saw TZ operating them there with my own eyes. Makes me wonder where exactly I *did* see them ... it wasn't ORD, I know that for sure.

It also makes an interesting reflection on eyewitness testimony...

I found a pic of the A300 Airbus Demonstrator on a Facebook page. Also, according to 3 ex-ATA employees who are members of the same FB page, including one who worked in ATA's SOC, there was never an L-1011 at MDW. I believe them. Midway Airport has been photo documented extensively throughout its entire existence, and there are no photos of an L-1011, a C-5, a DC-10 or even a 747, as someone claimed they saw there too. Again, prove me wrong with photos and I'll stand corrected, but the largest documented aircraft at MDW have been the 707-320, DC-8-61, A300, C-17, C-130 & the C-141.
