Corendon 747 (ex KLM PH-BFB) transport tonight

Tue Feb 05, 2019 4:32 pm

Tonight starts the transport of the Corendon 747 from AMS Schiphol to the newly build Corendon hotel nearby. It will be placed in the garden of the hotel.Dutch heavy haulage company Mammoet has the huge task to do this awesome opreation.

It has to cover 16 fields, they had to build bridges and they have to lift the 747 (170 tons ) over motorway A9.Transport starts tonight at 22.30 hours Dutch time. After the first leg tonight they will need 2 days to reorganize the transport and it will continue on friday night. On saturday night the 747 will arrive at the Corendon hotel.

There is a Livestream on Youtube and Facebook.Check the Corendon site for further info.

Cheers.

170 tons?
Are you sure they didn't remove the engines for re-cycling? And the APU.
Carefully remove the high value avionics (but maybe leave enough in place so that executive guests could sit in the Captains seat, sipping cocktails and imagining they are at 40,000 ft?)
Maybe take out the pax seats? (see photo below)
Remove the galley, toilets, overhead lockers?

That would strip it down to the OEW of a -400F, less the engines. (ca 140 tons?)
They could easily go further; the hotel version doesn't need much more than an empty shell.

I accept it is still a big task, but there is a lot they could do to make it (slightly) easier.
Do you know if it will run on it's own MLG, presumably on sets of tracks laid out for the job?

Nothing to see here; move along please.

They took the engines of, thee APU and some electronics.Yhe interior is intact.
The 747 is placed on a special prepared self driving low loader. And no there is no way to make it easier..This is a complex movement. So comlex that is gives Corendon Uslu a lot of headeaches.

I'm happy to see this beauty being given a second life. The transportation does seem like a mammoth task. Thanks for your contribution here.

Remove wings plus vertical and horizontal stabs. It’s been done before and makes move much simpler. Apparently not required in this case.

Yeah you are absolutely right..It has been done before with another KLM 747 here in Holland. They removed the wings etc.. But in this case it was indeed not required. The biggest problem was to get it over the grassy fields but it went ok it seems.

What worries me is due to the high set up and that too only on the inboard MLG, any crosswind would create challenges since they have nothing to tie the wings down. But that is just me. I'm sure they have plans for that. I love these types of projects.

Never ceases to amaze me the amount of work involved to move an aircraft. Sometimes Cranes and in this case low loaders, bridges etc etc yet when still in day to day operation they just leep into the air.

Couldn't have chosen better words. In fact, the Dutch word mammoet (which is the name of the company that does this transport) means mammoth.

Still it's less work to move her this way than it is to construct a runway at the hotel so the aircraft could have landed there.

That is the way they got two South African 747s to Rand Airport near Johannesburg. They're part of the South African Airways museum. Keep in mind the runway at Rand is only 1712 meters (5617 feet) long and usually only accommodates light aircraft. Still they managed to land a 747 on it, not once but twice. Those aircraft can never get out of there anymore, the runway is too short for that.

The final part of the transportation is tonight. Livestream is up again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvFuhCKkITA

Tonight she will cross one road and then she'll be parked at her final (ever) resting place in the garden of the Corendon hotel. (bottom left)
Quite cool this is happening on the exact day the Boeing 747 first flew 50 years ago!

Weird seeing her move those last centimeters; the last she'll ever move...

He didn't want to specify the costs (obviously) but Atilay Uslu has mentioned the whole thing/operations would cost a few million.

Will the 747 be accessible or just a garden ornament?

He's a bit secretive about the exact purpose of the aircraft; but he has mentioned some sort of 5D experience, a museum of some kind and wing walk.
