6:40 isn't that long if you think about it. I'm sure there are some westbound flights from the east coast that eclipse that number in the winter, especially routes like EWR-OAK or BWI-SAN.

I've definitely had a few flight times that pushed or exceeded 6:40, but as far as distance, N471 may be on to something.

WN has about 130 flights a day @ OAK. It is a Focus City for them. SFO has about half as much service on WN. OAK makes far more sense than SFO. Connections are just one reason but also they have the ability to fly multiple flights per day from OAK to Hawaii as they have something like 15 gates to operate from.

When WN announced their intention to do inter island I took it as meaning triangle type routings and not necessarily them trying to match HA's hourly frequencies. I don't see how doing triangle flights between islands would be any worse than the short flights they already do (or have done in the past) on the mainland (HOU-AUS, IND-MDW, RNO-OAK, ISP-PVD).

Now if they think they're going to be able to beat HA at their own game with hourly frequencies then I think they will fail spectacularly at that.

ATA operated MDW-ONT-HNL-ONT-(Red eye) MDW right before they went bankrupt.
WN has such a huge customer base in SoCal I wouldn't be surprised at all to see ONT with a daily HNL flight or at least a Saturday only seasonal N/S.

Even in LGB.
WN seems to be getting the majority of the 13 vacant B6 slots.
If no other airlines take the remaining 4 slots I can see WN adding daily flights to Hawaii from LGB. And if Rumor are true that B6 is pulling the plug on the remaining short haul flights out of LGB.
I Wouldn't put it pass WN to rethink its LAX Hawaii plans in favor of LGB givin it's dual catchment arena of LA and OC especially with LGB 50% less airport operating cost vs both LAX&SNA.
The Rapid Rewards SoCal fliers would gladly treak to LGB for a none stress airport experience on a Hawaiian vacation.
HA LGB-HNL is doing remarkably well so I'm sure WN watching closely.
Like the weekend only DEN service I also wouldn't be surprised if they axed 1 weekend flight from both SJC and SMF to run a Saturday and Sunday only nonstop to HNL and OGG from LGB.

Although not a scheduled flight, I was curious if the HNL-DAL was the longest leg (flight) ever flown by WN. FlightAware shows it as 6:40.

I posted this above, with the dates of service. Don't think their DC-8s ever flew it on scheduled service--maybe on military charters.

That's quite alright. And actually, Braniff may have used a DC-8 occasionally on the route after they retired the last of their 707s in 1973. If 'Big Orange', their one and only 747 at the time, went inop/tech, a DC-8 (or two) would have been their only available substitute for the 747. Doubt it happened more than a few times, if at all, as their 747 was an extremely reliable aircraft, but it could have. Either a DC-8-62 normally used on the Latin American routes or one of the four DC-8-50s they purchased from National in '73 to replace the last of the 707s that were normally used for charters.

WN received confirmation from the FAA that it successfully passed it's first Validation flight.
Onto the next validation flight later this week. WN has an aggressive schedule for theses flights I'm told.

From what I have heard.
Table top preflight run thrus Friday,Saturday and
Monday,Tuesday. Wednesday ferry to west coast. Thursday-Saturday Proving flights Monday Proving flight aircraft and crew overnight in OGG. Tuesday OGG-DAL. Wednesday table top review and certification. Thursday possible Release of Ticket sales for a mid March start date. Or Thursday-Saturday more table top review followed by another Monday-Wednesday Proving flights.

I'm sure this isn't the actual time line of events but it's the current speculation.

I predict a April start date for Hawaii.

Again I think the timeline I reported is the longer hard expressed timeline.
I've also heard them wanting to do Table top exercises today thru Sunday if the FAA is willing to work thru the weekend. Then they can get the get final 4 Proving flights completed sometime between Monday-Friday next week so they can put fights out for sale ASAP.
Will they have a Valentine Day LUV sale for Hawaii??
I don't see it. But who knows at This point.

Government may be shutdown again by close of business February 15 though. Not looking good on getting a deal as of this morning. It will be interesting to see what happens IF the government shuts down again and there are still more proving flights to do. Hoping that doesn’t happen though.

Not hardly!

Braniff International used to fly DAL-HNL return six days a week in a 747-100 (their only one at the time). On the seventh day, she rested.

Before the 747, they also did nonstop to HNL in a 707-320C from Love.

All of this was, of course, before DFW opened.

Plane and Etops crew flying to OAK today.
WN LAS Rally Rumors from last night is that GK,Tom Nealon and Mike V will be on the Validation flight tomorrow as well.
If these rumors are true hopefully an Hawaii schedule will be announced tomorrow when they arrive in Hawaii.

Well, given that WN is the LUV airline and that the new company logo is a heart, it would be fitting to make a big announcement on Valentine's Day.

I’m back in California this week so I’m a couple days out of the loop but that would surprise me because we were told this is the first real validation flight and it will be all business with no pomp and circumstance like the last one.

So hearing OAK-HNL Thursday
HNL-OAK Friday
If government doesn't shut back down.
Saturday OAK--?? Diverting someplace (SAN/LAX/
Sunday ??? --OAK-HNL diverts to OAK for stronger than planned Head winds tech stop?
HNL diverts to-OGG Monday
OGG-DAL Tuesday
Wednesday round table de briefing and Etops approval.
Thursday tickets go on sale?
Sunday Saint Patrick's Day first day of schedule service? Just less than 30 days of sale!

As far as GK and top brass being on the flight tomorrow sounds like just Mike V.
Since ETOPS is his baby at WN.

Now this is All Hot Rumor speculation at best!
All I've seen is Flight tracker showing OAK-HNL tomorrow and OGG-DAL next week.

Other Rumor is FAA inspectors will be with WN until approval is finished and signed off regardless of the government reshutting down.

Fingers crossed

Alaska - Maui to San Fran, LA, San Diego... far from full. Alaska's Kona departures today - if you add up all the empty seats, you'd be well over a 737-900's capacity. Again, a non-rev's dream.

I stand by my statement. Southwest entering the trans-pac market is going to do nothing more than make Honolulu easier for non-revs.

You're all correct. Southwest won't change the fare environment that much given the intense competition already, but something will have to give. I doubt SMF will be able to support 3 carriers to both HNL and OGG. Same with SAN and SJC (particularly with UA up the road in SFO). HA, in their last earnings call, has warned about RASM dropping in 2019, and that warning did not include WN as WN has no published schedule yet. AS will likely be the big casualty here as WN has staked too much on their Hawaii plans, and because WN is the largest carrier at WN's planned gateways. HA will get those seeking the Hawaii vibe from the start. AA, DL, and UA will be able to leverage their hubs to fill up their flights to an extent, especially their interior US hubs as WN will not be competitive for Hawaii east of Denver until they start redeye flights. This will be a bruising battle for all involved.

Think about it this way - if and when WN enters LAX-Hawaii, there will be 7 carriers on LAX-HNL: AA, AS, DL, HA, SY, UA, and WN. Bay Area - Hawaii will have 5: AS, HA, SY, UA, and WN. Is there another domestic route that has seven competitors?! And hotels are already pretty full in Hawaii.

Biggest winners will be people traveling between California and Hawaii.

Flyguy, I’m not seeing anything more than the out and back OAK-HNL on the 14th and 15th.

I tried to pm you but it appears to be blocked.

Wouldn't be the first time. In the 80s/90s LAX-HNL had Delta, United, American, Hawaiian, Continental, Northwest, and ATA. All flying widebodies (DC-10, L-1011, or 747). One difference though was there fewer flights from secondary cities on both ends (the Hawaii flights mostly went to HNL, and socal flights generally went to LAX and not SAN or ONT or SNA).

Yeah! Me too...

I wonder if AS can optimize its service to the secondary airports in Northern California by doing through plane and connections?

Look for the MAX to make an appearance OAK-HNL on the 16th. OGG will follow immediately afterwards.

Thx Tropic, I'm still around ;)

The third launch in underway from OAK to HNL as 8725. I would suspect this one may have a "surprise" in store somewhere around the ETP. We shall see.

Why are they using 738's to begin with and not the MAX? Wouldn't the MAX have better performance on the route?

We only have a very few MAX that came ETOPS ready. Not enough to start Hawaii. There are 29 NGs that are ETOPS.
