Delta/Compass E175 makes emergency landing due to severe turbulence

Wed Feb 13, 2019 10:46 pm

Not too many details as of yet, but this appears to be DL5763 (SNA-SEA). So far, three are reported to be injured, two of which apparently were flight attendants. Crew declared an emergency and landed safely at RNO.

That had to have been one wild ride if it was enough to completely flip over a drink cart.

It looks like some mountain waves ended up "crashing". Wipe out! Sounds like both FAs have been released from hospital and are ok via SM.

I flew LAX-JFK this morning on B6 and we were cruising at FL37 doing 655 mph over Montrose when things got a little wild for 5 minutes. We ultimately descended down to FL35, which was better, but continuous light chop until we hit Kansas. We also lost a lot of our tailwind when we descended too.

Wowza, looking at the winds aloft there is quite the jetstream coming in over Northern CA. Over 150 knots in the mid 30's all the way to the Front Range. Lots of opportunity for some mountain wave.
Too lazy to work, too scared to steal!

How does a plane going from SNA to SEA wind up near RNO ?
the truth does matter, guys. too bad it's often quite subjective. the truth is beyond the mere facts and figures. it's beyond good and bad, right and wrong...

It's a straight line. SNA is considerably east of SEA.

Hence, the furthest West, that Amtrak serves is Eugene OR. Curvature of the earth brings busy skyways over surprising parts of the planet. PDX-LAX overflies RNO as well, found that out on my first LAX-PDX flight.

SNA is east of RNO as well. Easy 'bar bet': Which city is farther west, Los Angeles or Reno?

It got drawn into DTW’s gravitational pull.

I just got done working that fight it was disgusting inside of it. The passengers were really Shook Up. Some passengers said that they could feel weightlessness at some points The ultimate kudos to the pilots. They kept their cool all the way tell the time they left the airport

Surprisingly a lot of fights over fly Reno. We got a lot of diversions from LA San Diego and Santa Ana going to Seattle. And it's a lot easier for aircraft to come to us because we can turn them around a lot faster being a smaller station and we have the gate space.

Yep, often time a great view of Lake Tahoe when flying SEA-SNA or LAX.

It’s just like SFO is closer to HNL than LAX is.

I'll bet the landing was pretty exciting too. It was very windy by the airport this afternoon. My office is just a bit southwest of the runway and I was probably out walking my dog when they landed so I was very aware of conditions. The approach to RNO on a windy day is always pretty exciting.

I flew in from JFK to LGB the other night and upon descent we hit about 15 minutes of moderate chop and about 25 seconds of extreme turbulence that had the cabin loud with gasps and screams. The weather out west has been rather gnarly the past month.

I'm assuming you meant FL370 and FL350. A cruise at 3,700 feet in a commercial aircraft would be quite something!

The East Coast has also been seeing strong winds as of late. Here we had gusts top out at 40 mph today.
